100 times this.

I think I have a solid grasp of C++ and its manual memory management, but give me a build error and I’ll have zero clue how to fix it.

My idea is to allow premium users to have third-party apps that can be more customizable. Google barely has to lift a finger, premium would get more popular, and the experience would be so much better.

Just price it right and people will rent. For a single person this is all they really need.

I never knew the word was used as a slur or had sexual connotations. I thought it was a verb akin to “nerf” or “cripple”, as in “Windows 11 gimped the taskbar functionality.” I guess this word is still bad, as I want to enhance, not “gimp,” my pictures.

I recently took a class on ARM assembly, and yet I don’t even know half of these x86 instructions.

That’s it? That’s like at most $50 per person. And remember, money that is sent to the poor will be reinvested into the larger economy through increased consumption, or more sales for the employers.

I’m not super knowledgeable on this, but I chose Dynadot because it’s cheap and WHOIS privacy is included.

Maybe I should just cloud host, as it costs the same as a VPN. But then again, a VPN will also protect my privacy. Do I need to use let’s encrypt if I use a VPN or cloud host if I want to be secure?

  1. I want it to be internet accessible. A friend taught me how to use nginx for the local network, although I’ve forgotten that now.
  2. My previously mentioned computers are computers I don’t use that much, especially the old laptop. My main computer is a 2021 ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition. I won’t be hosting from that.
  3. Private networking is just hosting over a LAN, right?
  4. Does Docker work well on old hardware and is Docker easy to learn?
  5. I have the most knowledge on Ubuntu based distros. I don’t think Manjaro, a bleeding edge rolling distro, is good for hosting.
  6. How do I use let’s encrypt or something to boost my security?

Thinking of getting into self hosting but I’m a complete noob
I think of myself as technically inclined. I have installed Linux multiple times and have basic command line knowledge, and I've programmed in many languages, with the most experience making a static website game using HTML/CSS/JS. Additionally, I own the superspruce.org domain (my registrar is Dynadot), but I don't really know how to wield the power of owning a domain. I also have some spare computers to be used for hosting, a 2009 laptop running Lubuntu and a 3900X+32GB RAM desktop other running KDE Neon, but I'm also open to experimenting with cloud hosting too (I know, sacrilege here). However, I don't know much about the TCP/IP protocol or other networking protocols. I'm happy to learn, but the curve would need to start gently. I would want to try hosting my websites, and also a personal non-federated Lemmy instance to serve as a archivable forum for my games. Even if it's not very useful, it's great experience.

It also really depends on what is being made. My Assembly programs are specific homework assignments. My JS project is designed entirely by my will.

Why is this literally the opposite for me?

I have a class where I write in Assembly but instead I’m working on my personal HTML/CSS/JS project.

Can we have a la carte payments back? I don’t pirate movies/tv because I barely watch any movies/tv, but the only time in the past year I paid for one was when I could rent it for 48h for $4. I hate subscriptions and would rather just pay once per every time I watch.

Most of my music is “pirated” because you can’t find it on any streaming platform, it’s usually a YT download, often for game OSTs (often ones I own a copy of), and offline play allows stuff like Music Speed Changer to change the pitch and speed of the music!
