'All the opposition leaders need to come together' to support workers, NDP leader says

Ottawa has said it would respond with countermeasures should the tariffs materialize U.S. President Donald Trump still plans to make good on his promise to issue tariffs on Canada and Mexico on Saturday, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Tuesday. Leavitt said Trump is also still weighing fresh tariffs on China for Saturday. Trump said last week he would announce 25 per cent tariffs on Mexico and Canada on Feb. 1 unless the countries help tackle the twin issues of U.S. fentanyl trafficking and immigration. Canadian officials have said Ottawa would respond with countermeasures should Trump's tariffs materialize.

U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that he could still hit Canada with tariffs as early as next month. Speaking to reporters on his return to the Oval Office Monday, Trump recited concerns about the Canadian and Mexican borders while reiterating his threat to hit both countries with a sweeping 25 per cent tariff. "We're thinking in terms of 25 per cent [tariffs] on Mexico and Canada because they're allowing vast numbers of people … and fentanyl to come in," Trump said. "I think we'll do it Feb. 1," the president said in response to a question about when those tariffs could be implemented. Trump, who was sworn in as president around noon on Monday, has been signalling since November that he would introduce tariffs on Canada and Mexico. Trump initially promised to do so on his first day in office, but a number of U.S. media outlets began reporting early on Monday that the tariffs wouldn't be a day one issue for the new president.
