Trudeau: Canada fully supports Ukraine using long-range weaponry
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has firmly stated that Ukraine should be allowed to conduct long-range strikes inside Russian territory, despite threats from Moscow. This stance comes in the wake of Ukrainian forces occupying parts of Russian territory for the first time since World War II, and Ukrainian officialls asking Western partners to remove restrictions on the use of Western long-range weapons so that Ukraine can degrade Russia’s logistics and airfields in the rear and bring the war to an end faster. “Canada fully supports Ukraine using long-range weaponry to prevent and interdict Russia’s continued ability to degrade Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure, and mostly to kill innocent civilians in their unjust war,” Trudeau declared at a news conference in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec. The far-right media outlet at the centre of a US Department of Justice indictment over an alleged foreign influence campaign involving covert funding from Russia also produced dozens and dozens of videos this year focused on Canada. . . . Tenet Media’s YouTube channel, which counted 316,000 subscribers, went offline Thursday afternoon, nearly a day after the indictment was announced. However, an analysis of Tenet Media YouTube content preserved by PressProgress prior to its takedown has identified at least 51 videos focused on topics relating to Canada, including videos focused on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other hot button right-wing culture war topics. No one should be surprised by what Singh has done and how he chose to do it. NDP labour critic Mathew Green telegraphed publicly that his party had to have “tough conversations” about the deal with the Liberals — including the possibility of opting out of it. Towards the end of a dull summer of barbecue politics, Singh’s decision to scuttle the agreement to support the Liberals caught many people off guard. But the reality is that this decision was inevitable, and, from a political point of view, well-advised. . . . But the deal was a flop at the political box office for the NDP. Instead of getting credit for pushing the Trudeau government on key, progressive issues, the party saw its popularity decline. Yeah, it seems like a risky play for the NDP. They’re unlikely to be more powerful post-election. If it looks like the Cons are gonna win, people are more likely to vote strategically for the Libs to keep them out. It seems like they have a lot to lose. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out over the next few weeks.

It seems like a bad time to call an election. I’m a bit skeptical we won’t be looking at an election very soon though. Singh released what is a basically a campaign video earlier today, so it seems like they think it’ll be soon 🤷‍♂️

Smart. No HEPA filter over here but I’m keeping my fingers extra crossed!

The wildfires that ravaged Canada’s boreal forests in 2023 produced more planet-warming carbon emissions than the burning of fossil fuels in all but three countries, research published on Wednesday has found. Only China, the United States and India produced more emissions from fossil fuels than the Canadian fires, according to the study, which was published in the journal Nature. The wildfires last year call into question how much carbon the forests will absorb in the future, scientists said. That, in turn, may make it necessary to reconsider calculations of how much more greenhouse gas humans can add to the atmosphere without pushing temperatures beyond current global targets. On top of knowing who you are, where you are, whether you’re single or married, whether or not you have children, where you work, when you work, what your interests are, what your embarrassing interests are, etc. etc. etc.

People are weirdly blase about this but, if you use TikTok regularly, they have such a wealth of information about you that an intelligence agency would find it trivial to compromise you. You’re just gambling that you’re not worth compromising.

Bob Cole, the play-by-play voice of countless NHL games, dies at 90
Bob Cole, whose voice and lively language were the Saturday night soundtrack to hockey games over a broadcasting career that spanned more than half a century, has died. Cole, who was 90, died Wednesday night in St. John's surrounded by his family, his daughter, Megan Cole, said. "Thank you for decades of love for his work, love of Newfoundland and love of hockey," Megan Cole told CBC News on Thursday. Cole said her father had been healthy "up until the very end." Cole's trademark call — "Oh, baby!" — was one of many signposts he brought to play-by-play commentaries that earned him the love of fans and even players themselves. Cole, who said he still got goosebumps in his mid-80s when he stepped into an arena broadcasting booth, called one of the most famous plays in Canadian sports history: Paul Henderson's Summit Series goal in 1972, against the Soviet Union.

The Ontario government house leader, Paul Calandra, this week moved to amend a standing order that previously required lawmakers to use either English or French. Following a vote, that order now allows for an “Indigenous language spoken in Canada” to be used when addressing the speaker or chamber. Sol Mamakwa, a member of the New Democratic party who represents the Kiiwetinoong electoral district, recalled being punished for speaking Ojibwe (Anishinaabemowin) in his youth. “I am very honoured to be able to speak today on behalf of the people of Kiiwetinoong, on behalf of the people that were never allowed to speak their language in colonial institutions,” Mamakwa told the legislature. “These racist and colonizing policies led to language loss.” [MBFC](https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/the-guardian/) [Archive](https://archive.is/eKIhQ)

Five members of the 2018 world junior hockey team have been told to surrender to London, Ont., police to face charges of sexual assault, according to two sources. The pending charges are connected to an alleged group sexual assault of a woman in a hotel room. The incident occurred following a Hockey Canada fundraising gala in June, 2018, where the players were honoured for their win at the world junior championships. The players, who have not been charged yet, have been given a set period of time to present themselves at London police headquarters, according to two sources with knowledge of the investigation who The Globe is not naming because they have not been authorized to speak on the case. Canada’s First Legal Tent City Pushes for Electricity
The wind turbine went up a few days after Christmas, white blades whirring against the blue winter morning sky. It generates a small amount of electricity, although more equipment is needed to deliver and store more power. But for the 30 residents of a tent city at CRAB Park, power sources like solar panels and wind power could help heat hot water for handwashing, light dark tents during the winter months and charge phones. “The idea came from residents and former residents a year ago,” said Fiona York, a supporter of the tent city. “When people are living outdoors and you give them that little bit of stability... you start thinking long term about resources and setting things up that are workable.” [Archive](https://archive.is/fWzoi)

The federal government is kicking off the procurement bidding process to establish a new National Indigenous Housing Centre for Canada. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) is leading the process of selecting an Indigenous government or Indigenous-led organization to start, lead, and operate the new centre, which is intended to “deliver funding to address core housing needs of Indigenous Peoples living in urban, rural, and northern areas.” “Indigenous organizations are best placed to find sustainable housing solutions for their People. The National Indigenous Housing Centre will be the first Indigenous-led centre to manage and administer government funding directly to Indigenous Organizations, and it will lead the development of a wider urban, rural and northern Indigenous Housing Strategy,” said Patty Hajdu, the federal Minister of Indigenous Services, in a statement. Military police are threatening to charge a sex worker who offers discounts to Canadian soldiers and senior leaders are warning troops to stay away from the Kingston-area woman. But such efforts have backfired and sex worker Christina Lea Gilchrist tells this newspaper that she is being inundated with messages from military personnel interested in the services she provides. The selling of sex in Canada is legal but military police allege Gilchrist broke the law with the “unlawful use of military uniforms,” according to police documents.

At least 33 Canadian churches have burned to the ground since May 2021. Only 2 were accidents
CBC News has examined 33 Canadian churches that burned to the ground since May 2021. Just two were ruled accidental. Investigators have determined that 24 were deliberately set while others are still under investigation. Some researchers and community leaders suggest Canada's colonial history and recent discoveries of potential burial sites at former residential schools may have lit the fuse. Hot damn, that’s Floridian-on-Canadian-drugs kind of savings!

Canada issued a warning Monday that it stands ready to defend its prescription drug supply from US importation plans—and also said the plans wouldn't work for the US, anyway. "Bulk importation will not provide an effective solution to the problem of high drug prices in the US," Health Canada said in a statement. The defensive stance comes just days after the US Food and Drug Administration granted Florida authorization to directly import cheaper prescription drugs from Canada in an effort to help drag down America's uniquely stratospheric drug pricing. Florida is the first state to win such an authorization, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis celebrated it, claiming the drug imports will save the state "up to $180 million in the first year alone." There are caveats, though. Before Florida can import any drugs, it must complete several obligations, including submitting to the FDA additional drug-specific information, testing the drugs for authenticity and FDA compliance, and relabeling them in accordance with FDA labeling. The FDA authorized the importation program in accordance with section 804 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act). The move stems from President Biden’s "Executive Order on Promoting Competition in the American Economy," which directed the FDA to help develop such programs. [Archive](https://archive.is/E8hkR)

False-flag conspiracy theories go viral on Twitter after school shooting
QAnon conspiracy theorists were quick to declare Thursday’s shooting at Perry High School in Iowa to be a “false flag” event, claiming that the “Deep State” orchestrated the event as a distraction from the release of documents on Wednesday pertaining to Jeffrey Epstein. The claim of a false flag event — a common assertion among conspiracy theorists in the aftermath of mass shootings and other high-profile events — reveals the degree to which reality has been fractured in American society and the consequences with which we must now live. It also provides a window into the conspiratorial world of right-wing ideologues and influencers, who now occupy a role in the information ecosystem devoted to assimilating new information into the alternate reality they’ve sold their followers. *[Caroline Orr Bueno](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caroline_Orr_Bueno) is an American social and behavioral sciences researcher specializing in disinformation networks.*

The Liberal government's gun-control bill passed a final vote in the Senate on Thursday, clearing the way for it to become law. Bill C-21 will cement a freeze on handgun sales, increase penalties for firearm trafficking and try to curb homemade "ghost" guns. The bill also seeks to ban assault-style firearms that fall under a new technical definition.

For the first time since nations began meeting three decades ago to tackle climate change, diplomats from nearly 200 countries agreed to a global pact that explicitly calls for “transitioning away from fossil fuels” like oil, gas and coal that are dangerously heating the planet. The sweeping agreement, which comes during the hottest year in recorded history, was reached on Wednesday after two weeks of furious debate at the United Nations climate summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. European leaders and many of the nations most vulnerable to climate-fueled extreme weather were urging language that called for a complete “phaseout” of fossil fuels. But that proposal faced intense pushback from major oil exporters like Saudi Arabia and Iraq as well as fast-growing countries like India and Nigeria. [Archive](https://archive.is/EhQBF)

AI-powered misinformation and disinformation campaigns are a “threat of a generation” but the government’s ability to do anything about it is “quite limited,” says the prime minister’s national security adviser. Article content Jody Thomas delivered a bleak picture about the growing fight against distorted or false information worldwide during a speech at a Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) event Friday. ~~ https://archive.is/VsndV
