Every dollar we spend making sure kids in poverty and their families have food and shelter and security is going to pay off hundreds of times over in adulthood. It’s still a hard sell, politicians tend to operate in the timeframe of “next election”.

I don’t think it’s all that slippery a slope. Not many deep sea private submarine rescue operations going on amidst the working class.

Bank of Canada trying desperately to convince everyone that nothing is actually up?

Oh I’m sure they don’t. I just don’t know how they imagine the next few years looking. Are they all just assuming they’ll be out of the line of sight when things come to a head?

I’m in quite a high income bracket and by sheer luck bought my house right before the most recent price explosion. My small, poorly built, seventy year old home in a lower middle class neighbourhood is now worth four or five times what I paid. If I was renting, there’s no way I could buy it even though I’m making much more than I did when I got it. I can’t realistically look into upgrading, because the jump in cost to anything nicer is just absurd.

I have no idea how all this is sustainable and even less idea how our politicians think they can keep ignoring it. I know why they’re ignoring it, but they must be aware how this is going to end if they continue to shrug and look the other way.

You’re right about using “suspected” too often, but this type of denialism isn’t caused by that. Strengthened perhaps, but these types would always find excuses to deny

Is the housing supply thin, or just availability? My city keeps claiming it needs to open new suburbs, while half the houses in my quiet downtown area are empty and up for sale at prices that are just unreasonable, because they were bought up by speculators.

What drove me most crazy about Trudeau’s rapid betrayal on this one is that the frigging liberals really would become Canada’s “natural ruling party” on a PR system. Even at their weakest they’ve always held enough votes to have remained strong and relevant if we used PR. However they know they’d lose the majority, and they’d rather lose entirely almost half the time than have an almost unassailably strong hold on the country that requires them to work with others.
