Why because the server is using a self signed cert or something? Did you save it from the server and put it in the irssi trusted root store and define it in your config?

Yeah, it is confusing especially now that we are all used to HTTPS and automatic configs. If you can grab the self signed cert you can just save it to your irssi folder as a .crt and pop it in the config.
