Things are getting more expensive in Canada and our population is aging. The liberals must do everything they can to lower the cost of living. But they have shown resistance to implementing a single payer pharmacare plan for the country, citing it as too expensive but they have agreed to adopt it in the coalition agreement with the NDP.
But the thing is we still have to pay out of prescription drugs why not instead use that money to pay a little more tax and be covered. The government could deal with the process of negotiating drug costs and bulk-buy supplies and to save everyone money in the long run.
Canada is the only developed nation in the world with a publicly funded universal system that does not cover prescription drugs.
People need prescriptions to function in everyday life so they can continue to work or volunteer in their communities.
Our health minister Mark Holland has shown resistance to the idea. We should urge him to do the right thing and listen to citizens not multi billion dollar pharma companies.
