There is a “need for overdue and increasingly urgent action by the federal government to reform the federal Criminal Code of Canada.”

Have our premiers done anything themselves?

Some of them are single-handedly driving crime, as I understand it. 😉

The provinces have no control of criminal law

No, but they do for almost all social programs as well as housing.

They beg the feds for more tax points, the feds agree, the provinces cut taxes/services and stick their hands out for more. Rince and repeat.

Massive pressure on housing is being introduced by the fed itself (via immigration and banking regulation), and the fed shares a massive responsiblility in all the social programs (most notably healthcare) that were downloaded to the provinces in the 1990s by Jean Chretien.

The fed is directly responsible for many of these issues because of actions taken over the past 30-40 years, why should the provinces be responsible for fixing it?

Wait you mean all those increases to police budgets didn’t do fuck-all to stop crime? I’m so shocked.

Neither did the gun bans apparently

“The conditions we’ve pushed our people into is causing crime to increase. This must be the federal governments fault and not us - who are by definition closer to peoples lives.”

Yeah the premiers bear way more of the blame here. Crime is on the rise due to living expenses increasing which is the result of bad housing and healthcare policies by the provinces.

The federal government used to subsidize low income housing and fund coops. They could now, if they were serious about improving housing affordability.
