MILWAUKEE (AP) — Former President Donald Trump chose Sen. JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate on Monday, picking a onetime critic who became a loyal ally and is now the first millennial to join a major-party ticket at a time of deep concern about the advanced age of America’s political leaders.

The 39-year-old Vance rose to national fame with the 2016 publication of his memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy.” He was elected to the Senate in 2022 and has become one of the staunchest champions of the former president’s “Make America Great Again” agenda, particularly on trade, foreign policy and immigration.

Vance, Trump said, “will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond.” Several of those Midwestern states are expected to play a critical role in November’s election.

Vance has become a fixture on the conservative media circuit and frequently spars with reporters on Capitol Hill, helping establish him as the kind of leader who could carry Trump’s mantle into the future, beginning with the next presidential election in 2028.

Vance was rewarded for his turnaround during his bid for an open Senate seat in 2022, during which he landed Trump’s coveted endorsement and rode it to victory in a crowded Republican primary and a general election hard fought by Democrats.

Ryan pointed to reports that the organization made payments to a Vance political adviser and conducted public opinion polling, even as its actual efforts to address addiction largely floundered.

I’m not that surprised. Since Trump moved to Florida, he couldn’t pick anyone there. I also feel like Vance is probably a lot closer to Trump’s style.

Others have pointed out that Vance was historically a “never Trumper” who used some pretty colorful language to describe the former Pantshitter-in-Chief. Love being led by spineless weasels, it’s my favorite 🙃

Literally watching Trump make all the right (no pun intended) moves to maximize his votes in November, and Biden make all the wrong ones…

We’ll see, at least with regards to Trump. Usually a VP is selected to “round-out” the ticket, to bring in additional votes from those who iffy on on the presidential candidate. But if this guy is already MAGA to extreme and a Trump loyalist (though he wasn’t always), what segment is that bringing in that wasn’t already planning to vote for Trump?

In other words, how many Republicans are there who don’t like Trump and wouldn’t vote for him, but now that Vance is there, will vote for Trump? I feel like that’s a pretty small number.

Vance is capturing conservatives who don’t like Trump’s age or his stupidity, and want a younger and more calculating candidate. He was, alongside DeSantis, once of the Trump-but-more-effective names in the primary.

Trump is not going to recapture Never-Trumpers; they have fled for Biden or RFK at this point. He’s going to recapture the disinterested right wingers who never liked him because they think he’s only in it for himself, instead of for their ‘side’. If you check conservative chat spaces, they’re absolutely ecstatic over this choice.

Great. So now we have to hear from this asshole daily in addition to Trump’s meandering authoritarian christofascist rants.

This is a pretty bad pick, I’m glad. I was worried he was actually going to pick somebody that independents like

Agreed. from an electoral standpoint, it’s bad.

Of course, if Trump wins, then it’s still a bad pick, but for completely different, terrifying reasons.
