Even amid a provincial state of emergency that has seen tens of thousands forced to flee their homes due to wildfires, people in B.C. are defying a ban on campfires.

The BC Conservation Officer Service said Monday, in a social media post, that seven tickets were handed out over the weekend totalling a combined $8,050.

They should have done what we did in Nova Scotia, and up it to 25000 during our province’s fire season this year.

That, and confiscate all equipment and goods used in perpetration of the crime. They can ebay it later on a guilty verdict or give it to someone who needs camping gear and dodge rams. Sorry about your $90k truck, Chad.

That’s what ON does if you’re caught fishing illegally (over quota, wrong species, outside slot, etc). And hunting as well. Truck and gear is gone, along with charges, court dates, fines and possible big X against future licenses.

I know DFO has wide ranging seizure powers.

It’s not like that stopped people. Did they even actually issue and collect on those? Because it really just seemed like the Premiere got on TV every day to impotently shake his head about it all.

Didn’t do a follow up. Hopefully, and there a couple suggestions below that would be a welcome addition.

They should do what Australia does: hand out arson charges. Doesn’t just fall off of a person like a mere fine

Hmm maybe the point could be better made if these people were told they had to assist in fighting a wildfire

Problem is without proper training they’re just as likely to die instead of help.

You say this like it’s a bug instead of a feature.

…and get others killed because of how brain dead they are.

Ah. OK, right. It is a bug.

It is a yearly event in the East Kootenays that some Albertans are charged for having campfires during a campfire ban. It is as normal as daylight. We also have to do yearly bush cleanups for all the trash and abandoned campers and trailers.

Blaming Alberta for BC’s problems is such a boring argument. Locals trash nature all the same. Come check out the island.
