You can try setting up NextDNS on your network and blocking all known Spotify ad delivery domains through the CHEF-KOCH Spotify filterlist.
Better yet, pi-hole
Sure, but that’s more complicated and requires some device that you can always leave on. I run one myself, but NextDNS is a quick and easy solution and it works on a VPN. You can also make your Pi-Hole work behind a VPN but it’s much more work, NextDNS always works, no matter where I am and on what network.
Agreed. I used NextDNS to get started. Its absolutely amazing for that. After that I wanted more, so have gone the Pi-Hole+VPN route and am not going back.
What do you e.g. on your phone when your not at home and you can’t connect to the Pi-Hole?
I have yet to run into a situation where I am unable to use the VPN back home.
Do you have a situation that this would happen in?
Oh, so you have the VPN server set up at home so that you can connect to your home network. That makes sense. I thought you used a commercial VPN provider to hide your IP.
Yes exactly. One day I’ll get a VPS and mess around with it but for now owning the hardware is cheaper and easier.
Gawd I love my PiHole
ill give it a try
Don’t hesitate to message me if you have any questions.
I think the only way it will work is if you connect via Bluetooth(if the echo dot can do that). Casting basically just sends a URL to the device and it fetches the audio feed itself. Since xmanager isn’t on the echo, it can’t block the ads.
I have the same issue when playing through my Google Home’s. I tried looking for a domain to block through my router, but I couldn’t find one that wouldn’t also block the music.
I am gonna say the obvious: the echo dots have their own Spotify client. You could use network speakers and stream from your phone to them. I think Spotify even supports them fairly well.
The protocol is… DLNA?
I’m guessing i can’t mod the echo dots in any way?
No, you can’t. Besides, it would be worlds easier to just get some regular ol Bluetooth speakers.
Only reason I like them is because I use voice commands all the time
If you stream from your phone to Bluetooth or network speakers, couldn’t you use the voice assistant there? I think there are open source ones iirc
