Canada on Friday banned cruise ships from dumping sewage and dirty water close to shore, and said it would impose fines of up to C$250,000 ($190,000) for offending vessels.

Even this little step is on a voluntary basis, yay.

Has been voluntary since 2022. Has become obligatory per the article!

It’s ridiculous that they’re even allowed to dump untreated/poorly treated sewage and other effluent into the ocean within the 200 nautical miles which is Canada’s jurisdiction.
