The communities on different instances are not the same. You can subscribe to both. The idea behind federation is that one company/server can’t control all the traffic. It might result in a little splintering of communities, but I think it’s ultimately better to be decentralized.
On the Mastodon part of the fediverse, we’ve seen big instances shut down or defederate. It didn’t really change much because everyone else could still do what they wanted if they weren’t actively on those instances. On Lemmy/ it would hurt a bit more since those communities would have to find new instances to use (but if you’re smart you’re already signed up to a bunch of different communities anyway)
I agree. It also works well for small differences between communities. For example a Lemmy.world gaming community might not allow discussion of piracy and it is allowed here. This instance also has rules against NSFW content and another instance might not.
The ideological diversity the fediverse allows is one of the coolest parts about it. There are instance admins, but there’s no such thing as a single fediverse admin so everyone can have their little corner of the fediverse and it has its own attributes.
So throwing out a hypothetical here. I am going to migrate a sub from reddit where I was basically the only person creating the content. How would I keep someone else from picking the same username as me on a different instance, and then copying my exact posts after I post them on my instance? The content I put up on reddit solely belonged to me, but I do have a little concern about the scenario that I am posing.
On the desktop version of Lemmy I believe it lists the instance along with the username.
If you are worried about users using an app like Jerboa not being able to tell the difference you could rely on things like a unique profile picture or PGP signatures. It all really depends on your threat model.
It would be a lot of work to do anything more than cross post your content.
The full community name includes the instance name. For example !android@lemmy.ml is a different community than !android@lemmy.world. The prefix name may be the same, but the full name is unique. I think this distinction may be confusing for some since being federated means a community has both a first and last name, so to speak.
They aren’t the same, you’ll see many communities with the same name in different instances. I’m still a newbie here, but what I do is to follow only the most popular one.
Remember that most instances are federated and some users or mods from any of the communities in different instances will make reposts from that communities on other instances, so there’s a possibility you’ll see a lot of duplicated posts.
