This gave me confidence as well, thank you 😆

Don’t they have special projectors sent from the companies these days?

I mean the whole machine. Unless I cage it to the floor

If someone nicks it, can’t they just use boltcutters? Could hide the drive under the floorboards theoretically

Simple safe encryption for a server?
Hi, I'm running a ubuntu based backup server. And was wondering if there's a simple way to encrypt my drives in case they get swiped or something by a break in. But also in a way that the computer can be restarted and decrypt the drive without me needing to stick a key in everytime. Any ideas? It seems basic but I'm not an expert on all these newfangled encryption terminology, so would like something idiot proof (by idiot proof, not idiot enough to lose/forget the decryption key)

The story itself isn’t the allegation, the allegation of racism was part of the story. Apologies if my comment didn’t convey that clearly enough

I actually heard a story where someone made an allegation of racism against somebody, the police logged it but never visited that person or informed them about it. Then that person had a check for a job (I believe working with Children) which involved seeing police records, and it was recorded there. It couldn’t be overturned or be removed because it was in no way a conviction, but it still stopped them from getting a job regardless.

What’s the context? Are the police the ones trying to get you to make a Facebook account?

I have seen several "AI Bible app"s advertised. I don’t even want to ask what sort of concoction they’re making

I used to try and compile from source first. Was good experience. Don’t see why I should bother now, though 🤣

Ah, that goes on my main server. I’m learning.

It seems to be it’s own operating system. Will this screw up my setup?

Ok now it’s asking me to serve a “.well_known” file like… How?

How do I restart synapse…

Pressed enough buttons and it worked

I mainly want matrix for the bridges.

CLI familiarity is fine. CD, Nano, mkdir, rm. I am proficient with that. But I am not necessarily proficient with Docker (went with it because it worked nicely for another thing which was well documented and very straight forward). It’s just I’m trying to self host stuff. Some things like Wordpress and Immich are straightforward. Some things aren’t like Matrix and Mastodon. Lemmy is also notoriously bad.

This is the second thing I’m running on docker

The step tells you to remove it after at least

I do agree, manies have I found documentation saying “make a fresh install of Raspbian” as if I’m using the computer for this single issue

(Disclaimer: I am not running matrix on a Raspberry Pi)

I still have to sort out having a different server name to the access name so I can use the domain as well. Do I just put a field into the config like the rest? Can it go anywhere?

Expensive mechanical keyboard? I have been using this since the mid 2000’s

I have never had to replace a mouse ever. I swear the mouse I’m using is from the early 2000’s

I took a bribe on my Minecraft server once. Although I made them change it from going to me to being a direct donation and keeping it a secret. I also confirmed it with the owner who was basically paying for it out of pocket lol. Good times.

Because everyone told me to

  1. Why would this show in their API? Makes no sense.
  2. Isn’t everybody allowed to use slurs on there now?

Use this. It’s finnicky but works for me. You have to start the download on one device, then pause it, copy the command to your file server, then run it. It’s slow and you can only do one at the time, but it’s enough to leave it idling

Links or it didn’t happen

Try this then do them one at the time. You have to start the download in your browser first, but you can click “pause” and leave the browser open as it downloads to your server

Why bother encrypting passwords? Just store them in plaintext, preferably on a web server that’s publicly accessible so other services can easily access them.

Does this mean I have to pay to use immich now? Huh?

Matrix on Raspberry Pi
Hi! I've done some research on self hosting Matrix for Matrix Bridges on a Raspberry Pi 5. Some people have said online that Matrix will be too beefy for an RPI due to large federated chatrooms and information. However, would it still be worthwhile installing just for my own bridges for social media, and maybe as a secure way for friends to interact? Thanks in advance!

What to be aware of before opening port 25 on a postfix Raspberry Pi?
I have a raspberry pi running postfix. I Realised unless I open port 25 I absolutely cannot receive emails (I have 587 open and can send but not receive them). However I heard there are scaries online which someone could potentially send emails from your server without consent. I believe as well my ISP doesn't block port 25. Is there anything I should do right now before opening port 25, or should everything be safe enough?
