This is what you want to get surround sound to work in windows again.
This driver will work with both hdmi and toslink (optical) and possibly other connections.
Evidently Microsoft used to include a Dolby digital driver back in the day but has removed it due to licensing.
Oh and this will also enable surround sound in games too.
No doubt! I wanted to just quickly add that sometimes you can find more obscure movies through YouTube, Roku, plex or the many other free movie and tv options available. My wife and I just came upon this situation today where we couldn’t find the movie from her youth to rent or buy anywhere but lucky YouTube had it (with ads of course).
This sounds awesome but not sure it would apply to my use case. Maybe you could elaborate.
What I want is to have 1 pc be a host for all the tvs in my house (4, master bedroom, guest room, office, and living room) each room has a video output and a usb cable with a hub that has keyboard and mouse and maybe a controller for games.
So far what I have is all the displays are mirrored and the keyboard and mice and joysticks work in each room but all the displays show the same thing.
It would be rad if each one was a vm and had its own front ends so you could watch plex in one room while someone plays Dave the diver in another.
lol. What? You have a link to article or some proof of a video file as an attack vector for a hacker? Video files aren’t executable and even if there was a way to cause some type of malware to be ran from it the file it would have to be coded explicitly for the video player/system running it.
My guess that if this was a legit attack vector that all the latest movies and big popular tv shows would be targeted and we would hear a lot of stories about it.
You’re on Linux which gives you a huge leg up on not being target by a virus. Just chill and watch your movie.
Yeah totally agree with you on the smart speaker and camera bit. My google home mini resides in an upper cabinet in the kitchen. You have to yell in its direction to get it to hear you. We mostly just use it to add items to our shopping list. It also connects to a Bluetooth speaker system (that doesn’t have a mic) to play music through.
The cameras I’m getting are just for the outside of my house and I’m planning on getting the (rtp?) feed off of them and self hosting.
I don’t use them but I work for a dj that uses them to backup all their music and production music. This has been going on for over 10 years now and they are still using them. At one point I was over there while they were downloading a large batch of their files and the speed was fast enough to saturate his internet.
Wow thanks. I’ll look into it. I bought a 4 pack of smart plugs for $25 and figured there had to be a catch. But 4 years later they are still working fine. Nothing I use them for is mission critical or high amperage but I’m happy.
I also have 4 levitation smart switches which I’m not as worried about them but still keep them on the vlan.
Besides those I have a cheap smart ir transmitter, and a google nest smart speaker. About to add 2 WiFi cameras to the vlan, so we will have to see how the performance works out.
I don’t think I am special but I have a few vlans setup. May main concern is using cheap “smart” devices from china and isolating anything they see or do to their own private network.
I also have a vlan setup for my guest network because I let my neighbors use it and wouldn’t want them exploring my nas.
Hey looking back through my setup I realized I have something a little different. I have my htpc with hdmi going to my tv and then toslink (optical) audio feeding my surround sound.
It looks like to get my setup work had to install a custom audio driver. It’s called “aaf Optimus” which allows me to select Dolby digital as an option under “default format” in the audio properties menu.
Not sure this applies to you as my setup is kind of convoluted. Anyways when I watch YouTube the sound is just plain 2 channel audio and when I play something from Netflix it does pass through surround. Games are also in surround sound.
Just wanted to double check everything and give you a heads up. Good luck.
Do it! Yeah start with the mother board and see what happens and then open the fucker up and replace the try to move the platters to working drive. You don’t have anything to lose so why not. For a quick and dirty clean room run the shower really hot for a few minutes to make a bunch of steam and then wait for the humidity to naturally equalize, boom you got a few minutes to do your swap job.
Put the nas and router where the internet comes in at and the just use WiFi for your office and the rest of the house. Thats what 99% of the people do. All the new WiFi routers are really efficient at beam forming and other technologies to get you a decent signal.
At my house, since it is raised up I was able to crawl under and run Ethernet to the living room for the htpc(gaming) computer and it was pretty easy to install a keystone next to a power outlet. Not sure if that is viable in your situation.
But even then I didn’t bother running Ethernet to all the rooms because even streaming 4k video is viable over WiFi. Though I understand it might not work so well if trying to edit on a nas or something similar.
Forgive me, but isn’t sharing files between pc and an iPhone and remotely accessing a windows computer, two totally different things?
To share files between iPhone and pc you just plug in a usb cable and or use iTunes.
To remotely access a pc there are web services like gotomypc.com (among others) and software services like vnc (among others).

I have a few more that I was using for games and am happy. It’s not ideal but it is what works for me.
I have this currently. Been running steady for 5 years now. I have 2 5tb portable hdds as my storage (usb3) and all the arrs, plex media server and qbittorrent with the vpn and a kill switch so if the vpn goes down the torrents aren’t running. Everything just works as long as nothing needs transcoded. My main tv is Roku and seems to handle all the file formats so it been working fine for me. YMMV.
Currently I am trying to learn docker and containerize all the different apps to make redeployment simpler.

This is good advice right here. Unless you’re a dj (even then it’s overkill) and or have incredibly high end equipment (again, it’s probably overkill), just go with some high bitrate mp3. MP3 is incredibly compact, everything plays it, and has all the metadata needed. Seriously you can’t tell the difference.
Well it depends on how much you pay for power and what your pc consumes at idle (or at least idling while doing networking). I’d do an analysis and a graph with excel to make sure. Many old (used) networking components can be had for a steal and will still have many years of use still left in them. Use a kill-a-watt to get an accurate account of idle pc power.
Commenting to bring awareness to the ‘arrs. Radarr sonarr and lidarr will get you all the media you need organized perfectly. It runs on any device but take a few days to figure out. Once setup it’s a set it and forget it thing. Uses torrents and or usent so use a vpn. Mine runs on a 10 year old raspberry pi 2 and a few usb hdds. Been going strong with very little maintenance for 6 years at this point.
And that’s the problem right there. That’s 12w idle power. The computer is not going to idle all the time and power consumption will rise. If you are like me and live in a place with high cost of power this will add up. The raspberry pi will is at max 9w of power. That’s max. At idle it’s more likely to be around 3 but could be more if you have some usb drives plugged into it.
Maybe consider selling your pi2g and buying a pi4g or 8g.
I was able to adapt my ups to use lithium ion batteries. I bought 2 giant ones that are used for rv solar systems. I tried using the other batteries and even when sitting by idle they loose their effectiveness.
