They’re saying you can pirate a copy from the high seas to keep on Plex/Jellyfin but pay for a digital copy in order to pay the artists/studios. You won’t want to rely on Prime Video to actually store or watch your purchases because it’ll be disappointing in both regards.

Often times on this sub there’s always an alternative being proposed, so I’m a bit shocked that this time most of the answers are simply “no”.

That’s simply because we can make our own rules and don’t have to abide by the terms IP holders set. Studios won’t give out DRM free media because then you can just copy it and share it online easily. That’s not to say you can’t already do that with current media, but there are ‘barriers’ in place along with laws against it.

As far as paying artists, with regards to TV and movies, who would you even pay of the hundreds/thousands of people that it takes to create them?

USB PD is not specced for USB-A which is limited to 5V 2.4A. They had Quick Charge back in the day that got a little bit higher power using 9V but all the modern higher voltage high current PD stuff uses USB-C. The USB-A cables aren’t specced to be running 5A or more that PD uses.

USB-C can deliver more power which is why they’ve been appearing more and more on charging bricks.

Declared a monopoly only in the search engine space AFAIK. Browsers don’t have anything to do with that other than maybe setting Google as the default search engine.

I use Firefox everywhere except work where my only options are Chrome or Edge (both chromium). Apparently uBlock lite is supposed to work on the new version of Chrome and hopefully still functions roughly the same. Apart from block web ads, I rely on it to block YouTube ads.

Someone took Monster’s “$100 gold plated HDMI” cable and one-upped it.

Damn bro, this is like seeing an 8-slot VCR or 50 disc CD changer.

Ditch the SD card all together and get a cheap SSD to use as the boot drive instead.

Have you tried Lidarr? This might help with finding files that are appropriately tagged versus those that aren’t. At the very least, you might consider duplicating the more hard to find stuff and ignore things like Taylor Swift and the like.

We have Logitech wired mice at work and they’ve turned into straight garbage in recent years. I’ve literally opened one brand new and had the cable begin fraying where it feeds into the mouse within a week. Previously, our Logitech mice would last for years without issue with 24/7 use.

I’m sure they charge a fee to pay your rent with a card too.

there are a LOT of crimes and maybe serious ones that can be summed up to “did stuff with ones and zeros”.

While that’s true, this ain’t really one of them. I don’t really support for profit piracy, but when juxtaposed against negligently taking a life, it’s insane to see the disparity between the punishments.

Wow he’s facing 48 years in prison for distributing some ones and zeros on the internet. A DEA agent recently ran over and killed a mother riding her bicycle near me after running a stop sign to catch up to his buddies and the courts ruled that he’s immune from being held liable for his actions.

Funny how justice works in the US.

Are you getting a discount when you buy a carrier phone on contract? Every time I’ve priced them out, the total for 24 months of payments is typically around the full MSRP of the phone. Buying direct usually results in hefty discounts since companies like Samsung always have some sort of deal going on. My parents recently got some bottom of the barrel smartphones and still wound up paying hundreds of dollars for them on contract even though you can buy them outright online for 1/3 of the price.

They’re wanting the Pi to do more than one thing. I’m assuming they’re running Klipper but also want to run a file server or PiHole, for example, on the same Pi.

Not sure why you’re equating “overhyped, expensive, and unreliable” with “this thing will never exist.” Nobody is arguing that.

I look at it more like autonomous driving which we’ve been told is just around the corner for close to a decade now.

I would recommend both at some point in the future but for now, get an SSD and use that as the Pi boot drive. The default is an SD card and you will absolutely destroy it from the reads/writes fairly quickly which is a huge pain in the ass. Once you get some more disposable cash, get an HDD for mass storage. If you want a budget option, check out serverpartdeals.com or something like the WD Easystore/Elements external drives.

“My jurisdiction” could mean their house and their degree could be from PragerU or some other sham online college. The way everything is worded so vaguely leads me to believe this is the case.

I think it may tangentially as you could argue hacking into the software to modify and bypass software locks is akin to piracy.

If you go to canyouseeme.org and test your Plex port does it show as open?

Your new ISP might have CG-NAT meaning you don’t get your own IPv4 address and can’t be connected to directly.

Also stream a movie from your phone while connected to cellular data and then check that stream on the Plex admin screen to see what it says. IIRC the Plex Relay is fixed at 1mbps

I’m not sure as I’ve always stuck to WD drives. You should be able to Google the model + “shuck” and see if anyone else has done it. I know certain models either solder the controller to the drive or add it internally so that there’s no standard SATA port.

The larger clients should work the same as the micro sized ones, but don’t expect to get much more use out of them than maybe being able to store a drive internally as they’re typically full of proprietary connectors and stripped down motherboards. I’d only bother with one if you can buy it cheaper than one of the micro sized options like the Optiplex 3050

The Define series of cases from Fractal are also an excellent option. I have 9 HDD and a 5.25" optical drive in mine (Define R6) with room to spare and the whole thing is silent.

Maybe it’s best if I just hook up some USB drives to my Pi and get my hands dirty with that. If the performance is not too bad (like you said).

Just do this and grow as you learn. If you buy WD Easystore/Elements/MyBook external drives, they can be very easily removed from their enclosures later and installed internally.

The only caveat here is that a Pi is going to be terrible for Jellyfin unless you only download media that is 100% compatible with the devices you’re watching it on. If any transcoding is needed, the Pi won’t keep up. A NUC or Optiplex Micro might work better here as they both have full-fledged PC hardware and aren’t too much more than a Pi.

You don’t need to expose radarr/sonarr to the internet. Only your torrent client needs external access which would be routed through a VPN that offers port forwarding like AirVPN.

For hardware, I’m a big proponent of DIY. A NAS is very expensive and limiting since it has a fixed amount of bays. It’s much more econonomial to buy a case that can hold a ton of drives like the Fractal Design Define series and then run your own hardware. I’d suggest 32GB of RAM, a modern i5 CPU with QuickSync (for Jellyfin), and a motherboard that has as many SATA ports as you can get. Check PCPartPicker to compare features and prices.

To run everything, you might look into using Proxmox and then running all your stuff off that in VMs or containers.

I’d probably keep PiHole separate since you only need a RPi3 and you don’t want your whole network to go down if you restart the server. The rest can be run off the server.

It’s definitely TVDB screwing with your results. This is what everyone uses for their TV databases (along eith TMDB for movies) and these issues happen occasionally. Unfortunately, the people that run it are major pricks and refuse to ever edit things like this. They’d rather ban users for asking than listen to reason.

I’ve just been looking for a future solution when I retire my desktop. I wanted a lower power PC like a NUC but I currently have 9 or 10 HDDs in the PC which won’t work as a bunch of external enclosures and a NAS would be not worth the money for this many drives.

Maybe I’ll just get an i5 with QuickSync and an ITX or micro ATX for the next revision

What is your HDD setup using the NUC? Are you just using external drives via USB?

Same here. A brand new modular Seasonic Platinum PSU (back in 2018 when I built the PC) also needed the 3v3 pin covered. I just use Kapton tape over the pin to avoid any destructive methods or having to use sketchy molex connectors.

Which external drive did you buy? This must be a fairly recent change.

My oldest ones have been running 24/7 since 2018 and tons of people have been doing the same. Where’s your data to suggest that these drives fail faster than any other?

It’s completely fine and was one of the most common ways to add a cheap new drive back in places like /r/datahoarder. The WD enclosures are super easy to take apart with guitar picks and old credit cards. The USB controller just slots into the SATA port and is held in place with a single Philips screw. I’ve been running these in my server since as far back as 2018 (usually adding 1-2 every year or two) without a single issue.

Not the person you replied to, but my first 9 HDDs were all shucked from external WD enclosures (MyBook, Elements, EasyStore), but the last one I bought used from serverpartdeals.com. I think it was about $120 for a 14TB WD server drive. Thus far all is well with it after about a year.

Their entire product line really went to shit around 2015, whether you’re talking about phones, TVs, or appliances. Now they just skate by on their previously good reputation and intertia.
