I don’t think my adblocker cares what kind of ads they’re trying to show me. If anything their algorithms will just get confused for why this guy who used to be here hours every day now only comes to watch war videos once a day but no longer comments or upvotes anything.



Why even bother responding to me if, instead of addressing what exactly you take issue with in my statement, you just immediately resort to insults?


The only times I see people like me, who prefer owning a car “shouting down” people adcovating for better public transport, is when people suggest I should get rid of my car and ride a bus instead. A good public transportation system is a net-good for everyone, and in no way inconveniences me especially if I never even use it. It’s not busses and trains I have an issue with - it’s the naive city dwellers who thinks that because they get around just fine without a car then anyone would.


Is he just supposed to pay for the running of twitter out of his pocket or what? It says there they’ve lost 50% of advertisers, and are making negative profit. That isn’t sustainable. The purchase of twitter has cost him 40-something billion, and still keeps costing him even more. It’s not about just wanting more profit, but to atleast break even.


What makes you think he’s short on cash? Wealthy people don’t store their wealth in cash anyways. The money is tied to the stocks of the companies they’re running. That’s why he needed to lend the money for twitter too; he doesn’t have that kind of cash, but people are willing to borrow it to him because of his wealth.

If you just had read the article you’d see that they have lost 50% of the advertisers and are losing money. This isn’t about wanting more money just for the sake of it. No company can exist if their finances are on the negative.


He’s the wealthiest man in the world. That doesn’t mean he has a lair full of cash and just wants more. People really struggle to understand the difference between wealth and money in the bank. This isn’t about hoarding money just for the sake of it.


Don’t quote me on this but I believe his thing is what the handle says; knees over toes. It used to be considered to be bad for your joints doing exercises such as deep squats for example, but his belief is that it’s the exact opposite. He used to have really bad knees himself, and couldn’t really play basketball like he wanted to, but by doing these exercises he was able to strenghten his knees to the point they no longer cause issues for him. The main exercise he’s recommending is pulling a sled backwards. He tells about Finnish lumberjacks who used to drag logs backwards like this and how they had super strong knees.


If Sam Bankman-Fried is on your list of most hated people then you’re just a recreational outrage enjoyer.

People like him, Bezos, Musk etc. don’t make it onto the list of worst 100 people alive. Not even close. Focusing on people like them is a luxury for well-off western people with issues nowhere compareable to those living under dictatorships for example.


Ease of swapping parts is quite pointless as long as they keep bricking your device/disabling features when unoriginal part is detected even if it’s from another genuine iPhone.


Yeah I have no idea. The alternative would be electric radiators anyways so in most cases that wouldn’t make a difference anyways. Temperatures that low are quite rare - maybe just a handful of nights a year. Generally it stays around -10C


Yeah averages are way higher than that. My point just was that saying they don’t work in cold climates isn’t quite true. Yes, there are locations with way colder climates than this but if Finland isn’t considered a “cold climate” then I don’t know what is.

Heat pumps are super common here. Many houses just have a electric resistance heating so people switch to heat pumps to save on electricity.



Well it obviously stops working and unless you have some other means of heating your house you’re kinda fucked and can only hope it comes back on soon as it generally does.


This is what I find the most amusing about the criticism of LLMs and many other AI systems aswell. People often talk about them as if they’re somehow uniquely flawed, while in reality what they’re doing isn’t that different from what humans do aswell. The biggest difference is that when a human hallucinates it’s often obvious but when chatGPT does that it’s harder to spot.

No, I see your point, and I agree. These companies are almost guaranteed to cherry-pick those stats, so only a fool would take that as hard evidence. However, I don’t think these stats flat-out lie either. If they show a self-driving car is three times less prone to accidents, I doubt the truth is that humans, in fact, are twice as good. I believe it’s safe to assume that these stats at least point us in the right direction, and that seems to correlate with the little personal experience I have as well. If these systems really sucked as much as the most hardcore AV-skeptics make it seem, I doubt we’d be seeing any of these in use on public roads because the issues would be apparent.

However, the point I’m trying to highlight here is that I make a claim about AV-safety, and I then provide some stats to back me up. People then come telling me that’s nonsense and list a bunch of personal reasons why they feel so but provide nothing concrete evidence except maybe links to articles about individual accidents. That’s just not the kind of data that’s going to change my mind.

Well hey - atleast I provided some statistics to back me up. That’s not the case with the people refuting those stats.


What are these claims we’re blindly trusting exaclty? Do you have any direct quotes?


Tesla on FSD could easily pass the driving test that’s required for humans. That’s a nonsensical standard. Most people with fresh license are horribly incompetent drivers.


I think the issue here is that you like many other people seem to imagine that because a system is called “full self driving” it literally means that. As if it’s either fully human controlled or fully AI controlled and there’s no inbetween. No, this is just overly simplified black and white thinking that misses all the nuances about the subject.

Is the company legally liable for the actions of the self driving car? If no, then they don’t trust the vehicles.

This is utter nonsense. These companies aren’t not-liable for the accidents they cause. Ofcourse they don’t want to be and would rather swipe these incidents under the rug but that’s just not going to happen. There howerer just isn’t a precedent. This is brand new technology that no one has seen before. What the liability of these companies is going to be the end is still under debate. It’s just a blatant lie at this point to claim they have no liability as if that’s something that’s been settled.


Humans get into accidents all the time. Is that not unacceptable for you?

I feel like people apply standards to self driving cars that they don’t to human driven ones. It’s unreasonable to expect a self driving system never to fail. It’s unreasonable to imagine you can just let it practice in simulation untill it’s perfect. This is what happens when you just narrowly focus on one aspect of self driving cars (individual accidents) - you miss the big picture.


These companies are the only ones with access to those stats. Nobody else has it. The alternative here is to not cite stats at all. If you think the stats are wrong you can go find alternative source and post it here.


There’s several court cases ongoing about this stuff and I’d be surprised if these companies didn’t have any liability


With Tesla the complaint is that the statistics are almost all highway miles so it doesn’t represent the most challenging conditions which is driving in the city. Cruise then exclusively drives in a city and yet this isn’t good enough either. The AV-sceptics are really hard to please…

You’ll always be able to find individual incidents where these systems fail. They’re never going to be foolproof and the more of them that are out there the more news like this you’re going to see. If we reported about human-caused crashes with the same enthusiasm that would be all the news you’re hearing from then on and letting humans drive would seem like the most scandalous thing imaginable.


Well Cruise is offering a full self driving taxi service where they don’t mandate you as a passenger to pay attention to the traffic and take control if needed so it’s not fair to say that they don’t trust it so why should you.

With Tesla however this is the case but despite their rather aggresive marketing they still make it very clear that this is not finished yet and you are allowed to use it but you’re still the driver and the safe use of it is on your responsibility. That’s the case with the beta version of any software; you get it early which is what early adopters like but you’re expected to encounter bugs and this is the trade-off you have to accept.


The possibilities really are endless.

When the light turns green the entire row of cars can start moving at the same time like on motor sports. Perhaps you don’t even need traffic lights because they can all just drive to the intersection at the same time and just keep barely missing eachother but never crash due to the superior reaction times and processing speeds of computer. You could also let your car go taxi other people around when you don’t need it.


Most people consider cruise control to be quite useful feature thought it still requires you to pay attention that you stay on your lane and don’t run into a slower vehicle in front of you. You can then keep adding features such as radar for adaptive cruise control and lane assist and this further decreases the stuff you need to pay attention to but you still need to sit there behind the wheel watching the road. These self-driving systems at their current form are no different. They’re just further along the spectrum towards self driving. Some day we will reach the point that you sitting on the driver’s seat just introduces noise to the system so better you go take a nap on the back seat. We’re not there yet however. This is still just super sophisticated cruise control.

It’s kind of like with chess engines. First humans are better at it than computers. Then computer + human is better than just the computer and then at some point the human is no longer needed and computer will from there on always be better.


I hear you. I love driving and I have zero interest in buying a self-driving vehicle. However I can still stand outside my own preferences and look at it objectively enough to see that it’s just a matter of time untill AI gets so good at it that it could be considered irresponsible to let a human drive. I don’t like it but that’s progress.


Well you shouldn’t trust it and the car company tells you this. It’s not foolproof and something to be blindly relied on. It’s a system that assists driving but doesn’t replace the driver. Not in it’s current form atleast though they may be getting close.


I think one of the big issues psychologically about self-driving cars that people find really hard to come to terms with is the fact that even with the best systems, accidents are bound to happen and without a driver there’s no one to blame and we hate that.

The people here don’t seem to want anyone getting into these vehicles. Many here are advocating for all-out ban on self-driving cars and demand that they’re polished to near perfection on closed roads before being allowed for public use even when the little statistics we already have mostly seem to indicate these are at worst as good as human drivers.

If it’s about Teslas the complain often is the lack of LiDAR and radars and when it’s about Cruise which has both it’s then apparently about corruption. In both cases the reaction tends to be mostly emotional and that’s why every time one provides statistics to back up the claims about safety it just gets called marketing bullshit.


Statistically they’re still less prone to accidents than human drivers.

I never quite undestood why so many people seem to be against autonomous vehicles. Especially on Lemmy. It’s unreasonable to demand perfection before any of these is used on the public roads. In my view the bar to reach is human level driving and after that it seems quite obvious that from safety’s point of view it’s the better choice.


My eFatbike is limited to 25kph/15mph after which it stops assisting. Sometimes when pedaling back home from the trails on the side of the road I meet road bikers and it takes quite a while for them to catch me and even after overtaking I’m following them for a looong time before they get out of sight. You’d think a roadbike would be much faster but it’s the uphills where ebikes shine and it makes a huge difference. On flat or downhill they smoke me tho. No competition there.

Pretty crazy that you can reach 100kph downhill. My tops with the fatbike is about 63kph. That’s on gravel though.


I disagree. My eFatbike has 250W mid-drive motor and is limited to 15mph and thus is considered a bicycle by law. You can drive faster than that but it stops assisting you at 15mph. In my opinion anything faster than that doesn’t belong to the sidewalks and since you’re now driving in traffic you should be registered and insured.

I quite often see people zooming past pedestrians on sidewalks with their surrons and modified ebikes and these assholes are what’s going to ruin the fun for everyone else too. These are not bicycles - they’re light electric motorbikes.

Sprint yeah but unlike ebikes they can’t maintain that speed. I can basically keep up with roadbikers despite my ridicilously fat 4.8" mushy tires. They gain distance on flat and downhill and I catch them in uphill.


It’s quite amazing how well sponsorblock works really. I spend a shit ton of time on youtube and I almost never have to mark those sections of the video myself because someone else did it already.



Many people have also said if you set your location to for example India when signing up for premium you’ll get it basically for free compared to what it’ll cost in europe and it’ll keep working even if your location is elsewhere from there on.


There’s plenty of AI systems out there and has been for decades. What you’re probably talking about is AGI (artificial general intelligence)
