You can download in whatever format is available for any given movie. Often movies are available in multiple formats, especially the popular ones. DM your email address amd I can invite you to a private tracker but only if you promise to keep a good ratio.

Also I’m sure some other commenter is literally going to say “mkv is a container not a format” but whatever, if you want mkvs the movie or show you want has to have an mkv available.

Right, exactly. The alternative to this meme is offering them access to my Plex server.

Welcome to Wrexham.

Not the kind of guy who’d watch something from a USB. Technically not a co-worker but a former co-worker, because he retired a couple of years ago.

I use Musicbrainz-picard to organize music and clean up metadata. For Shows and movies, it’s pretty easy. I use Plex and it’s pretty flexible with naming conventions

Just use something like Jellyfin or Plex. Install the server side software on your laptop and the client side on your Android TV

I’m a Proton die hard but I hear their Linux VPN client is lacking. I use all of their products but not on Linux.

Yeah, I mean, why get Spotify involved at all? Just pirate that shit

Right. I mean Spotify is a business. Why would there even be an expectation for free ad-free Spotify?

There is no ad free Spotify on IOS to my knowledge.

I don’t understand this sentence. I don’t believe that you can’t pay for Spotify on IOS. Do you mean there’s no free ad-free Spotify?

To add to this, you might as well set up a VPN at the router level for your entire house because Google’s whole business model is surveillance and advertisements, so they’re 100% going to collect all of the data coming and going.

I use a VPN and maintain a ratio. They must use something other than IP address as a unique identifier.

I use a VPN and it’s on a kill switch, so if it gets disconnected for whatever reason, the machine can’t reach the internet at all.

I can’t imagine why a private tracker would disallow you from using a VPN

It’s all I use. I feel like there’s less risk and they’re way more organized.

To everyone in here saying they download entire discographies, great! I agree. But the follow up question is how do you even find out about new (to you) artists that you might like? I’ve cross referenced the library I have (about 27k tracks) with the “similar artists” sections of Spotify, last.fm, etc, and I feel like I’m just going around in circles. All of the similar artists are just similar to each other and I have all of it already. How do you branch out?

Yeah, performance is not an issue for me. I stream some Linux ISOs and so do a few friends. Pihole, photos backup, documents backup. That’s about it.

Were you able to swap in a new one and copy everything back over?

I mean, I was bored at work yesterday so started browsing. This is more of a thought experiment than anything.

Yeah they’re reds. Is there a way I can check how many hours they have on them? 10,000 is just over a year. They’re a couple years old now.

I’m not too concerned about them failing, I can afford to replace one without notice and they’re mirrored. And backed up in some other easy stores.

Oh, I don’t need to back it up because I have two drives running in RAID.

😜

How long should I expect a NAS to last?
First off, I'd normally ask this question on a datahoarding forum, but this one is way more active than those and I'm sure there's considerable overlap. So I have a Synology DS218+ that I got in 2020. So it's a 6 year old model by now but only 4 into its service. There's absolutely no reason to believe it'll start failing anytime soon, and it's completely reliable. I'm just succession planning. I'm looking forward to my next NAS, wondering if I should get the new version of the same model again (whenever that is) or expand to a 4 bay. The drives are 14 TB shucked easy stores, for what it's worth, and not even half full. What are your thoughts?

Have a Synology DS218+ with 2x 14TB in raid 1. So just 14TB total capacity one drive redundancy. I have over 500 movies a bunch of series and it’s like… 4tb full or something?

I’m gonna hold off switching for as long as possible. This looks like it’s not even close to PlexAmp. I mostly use artist stations and the DJ features. This just looks like it only plays albums or manual playlist.

Right. I mean, I looked into this a few years ago when I set it up and just accepted my fate

You should definitely set up pihole but I don’t think it’ll block ads on streaming apps unless I’m wrong and someone can point me to something that explains how I can set that up.

Sponsorblock does this with just regular I, not AI. E.G. crowdsourcing the sponsored segments

But every ad on every episode of every podcast can be different. Right now with pocket cast, I skip ahead 30 seconds at a time then go back 10 seconds. But I’d rather automate it

Is there a sponsor block situation for Podcasts?
I'm happy to adopt a new podcast app if it has sponsorblock natively or through a plug-in. Otherwise let me know if there's some other way to make it work. I don't see why it wouldn't work as all of the segments tagged for skipping are crowdsourced which would also work for Podcasts.

I have a Synology NAS, and while their Synology Photos is really good, it’s no match for Google Photos. It’s not their fault though, any self-hosted solution is going to be harder to share photos and do collaborative albums and such. And Google Photos image and face recognition is just not matched. I backup my entire photo library to Synology Photos but most of them are also in Google Photos for ease of access and sharing.

Prime is adding ads to their streaming service
I think I might cancel. I'm not watching ads and I'm not going to pay the extra $3/mo to opt out. I don't know if I'd end up paying more than the subscription cost in shipping though.... ![](https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/cd79807f-5ab4-4175-a8ca-de42ff824675.png)

I self host with Synology Photos, pay for extra Google Photos storage, and just today started using Proton Drive, but Proton will just be for whatever is on my phone today and moving forward. The other two have my entire library.
