for myself I find the existing android clients far from adequate. if you have filters, folders, identities etc it is a fuck tonne of set up. last time i tried i just gave up.

a network between networks to make them more resilient i think you’ve just invented the arpanet?.

It seems that hourly rates of german lawyers are €100 to €500 which is about what I would expect. Even a few hours of time is a lot. To explain the case, have the lawyer or their designate review it, prepare for a case and show up to court is many hours at a minimum. Even if it is a simple matter.

it isn’t known which side is in the right

vs

If the defendent is obviously in the right

But the defendant still has to put the funds up in the first place? It’s a huge gamble and most people don’t even have the ante available.

Is there anywhere in the world that has a robust and comprehensive public funding for legal entanglements of all types?

tell me why i shouldn’t use plex as I’m always tempted by it whenever these threads come up and everyone who uses it is so happy.

But free/libre is so much more delicious.

But don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

they don’t want to do it as a hobby. they want to have other hobbies.

Hello I have also literally spent thousands of hours on the general topic of self hosting and related stuff such as linux, filesystems, networking, hardware, software etc etc. Yes, it is possible to be this stupid.

Here is my simple math:

2000 hours / 12 hour days = 167 days. I have been generally building up on this subject for about 10 years. And in COVID I had a lot of blocks of days where I was just at the computer. For more than 12 hours. I think I have easily spent more than 2000 hours.

I still have extremely rickety set up that mostly isn’t doing any of the things I want. It’s fine for me because I have learned a lot, have fun, and nothing is mission critical. If I had money/business that was reliant on this I would absolutely pay someone! That is just part of doing business. Especially if anyone else was at all reliant upon it. If I have employees or the work I do is important than it is only respectful and professional to swallow the costs to ensure it is done at quality. And even if its just for my own use, not everyone enjoys this stuff and still want to be free of google etc.

Everyone here reminds me of all the shitty landlords who do such a bad job of “fixing” things themselves instead of paying the going rate for a trade to come do it right and to code. Like 3 visits to install an interior doorknob and never getting it right. Like dude, just admit you aren’t any good at installing doorknobs. And please don’t go near the plumbing.

fuck man, this silver bullet looks pretty cool. project is about 1.5 years old? i guess it’s been longer than that since i investigated these kinds of tools

https://github.com/silverbulletmd/silverbullet

While you can use SilverBullet as a simple note taking application that stores notes in plain markdown files on disk, it becomes truly powerful in the hands of more technical power users. By leveraging metadata annotations, its Objects infrastructure, Live Queries and Live Templates, SilverBullet becomes a powerful end-user programming tool, enabling you to quickly develop various types of ad-hoc knowledge applications.

I have errands to run this weekend and I cannot spend the whole time immersed in this.

borg is fab; i don’t think there is a mobile component tho?

restic iirc is complicated and more advanced

don’t forget rsync which is sync but is the basis of various back up tools

best description I have ever read of syncthing. they should put this in their readme or about page. describes the pros & cons in an honest way. I’ve had all the problems you describe and will probably have them again in the future, be confounded, be frustrated.

I get (mostly) worry-free backups

except this; it’s sync not back up. ;) but it is very backup-like and in some situations does the job as well or better than backups

I <3 syncthing nevertheless

does it support plain markdown?

IME joplin has its own format

most ide’s are extremely fun to use as text editors

my kind of fun

kindred spirits

a lot of folks are going to make some drivel up about how they’re preserving history or whatever as they don’t even adhere to basic archive standards and their entire collection is coincidentally only stuff they like lol

history will never forget joe rogan, the family guy, nirvana, playboy magazine, zelda, 4chan etc thanks to these heroic amateur archivists… lol not exactly representative of the plurality of human creativity

around the edges of the amateurs and within institutions they support like archive.org there is more room to value the diversity of human creation. I hope there would be more infusion of democracy and valuing of materials not of interest to white men.

feudalism + capitalism

worst of both worlds

haha good to know. :)

I was not able to complete the set up. :( I am not given up on it yet though.

could you like run a cron job to speed up the audiofiles after download? using maybe ffmpeg? might be a better way

omg I literally had to check if I had written this. We are almost the same.

Main difference is that I have a working understanding about linux file structure and am comfortable with text files, but I have only on a couple of occasions even attempted anything with docker. it makes me tired to think about.

Other than that I so feel you on changing things, not knowing what actually fixed the problem. And then having to re-learn everything from scratch on another occasion. I also feel there is a limit to how much I want to learn. I have no aspirations to do this for a living or to become extremely proficient. I have spent the past couple of weekends struggling with drives and shares and permissions etc. It should be simple but it’s hard and takes such a long time.

On your advice because it sounds like you are in a similar situation I will try it.

I’ve been slowly dipping my toes into self hosting.

What are the risks or disadvantages of using something like this? My plan has been to run debian with whatever services. Reading about this, it seems very complex and that makes me worried that it is more to go wrong.

On the other hand, it’ll be 10 years til I learn how to do all this myself.

So is it a good idea or not?

timer plugs are so freaking useful. once you have a couple you start noticing things you could do with them. just regular digital non-smart outlet timers. don’t get the analogue ones, they ticktickticktick.

I used to used floccus but it’s been a while.

edit: wtf the word "a w e s o m e " is converted into ৻( •̀ ᗜ •́ ৻) when I paste or type it. Is this coming from kbin or have I installed something weird on my computer?

FYI the glinet routers come with a version of openwrt that contains unknown closed-source components. That said they have nicer, easier to use interface that has no learning curve. So less of a project than many of the other options discussed here. It’ll work out of the box.

if you run a router on a computer like you suggest, can you also do other stuff with the computer like file serving? or is it a single function device for reasons of security or system resources?

@AbidanYre I was hoping it would be a Jaquard. Maybe self host the https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:A\_Jacquard\_loom\_showing\_information\_punchcards,\_National\_Museum\_of\_Scotland.jpg that hold the programing. Those card have been used 200+ years later to exactly recreate historical textiles for restoration purposes. That is some datahoarding!

Back on topic, I wish people would do more to describe their projects than say it’s “like x”. I don’t know all the different existing projects so its meaningless.

@Marcon

yes the point of it is to keep a list of your rss feeds. an account is required for this functionality. Click “Créer un compte ?”.

there are some instances that are free to use if you’d like to try it out. here is one I use: https://rss.cheredeprince.net/

There are some freely available freshrss instances if you want to try it out. The one I use

@mwalker789 Are you looking to create a “to read later” list, or to save the content to disk? Pinning and saving is like the former but your ideas about a telegram bot suggest the latter.

If it is more on the archiving side, here is a short list to get you started https://github.com/ArchiveBox/ArchiveBox/wiki/Web-Archiving-Community

@manwichmakesameal Who says “manifesting reality” is loony toones horse shit?

What nobody ever told Oprah is that it only works in the FLOSS world. 🪄

someone was just asking for something like this the other day

please share if you do. last time I looked (maybe a year ago) podcasts and audiobooks still have a lot of gaps in selfhosted.

Since podcasts are RSS feeds could you use an existing RSS aggregator? Need to add a player and track play time I guess.

I mean it is a pretty brief time period to be nostalgic over. In USA, any cellphone ownership passed 80% in 2010. That is an overall number. Depending on who and where you are it might have been before or after. I think 80% is “widespread”. Smartphones passed 80% in 2019. So you are talking about 9 years.

Tbh i do not know if relevant to making/breaking plans because my experience was that as soon as both parties have any kind of mobile device, plans started being more fragile. Not sure if smart/dumb has any impact. Maybe i misunderstood your point…

Mir offers another business metaphor for the tension on Reddit: “If you have a really good music venue, but you break relations with every notable artist, you’re not going to be a very successful venue. You need to really prioritize the needs of the folks providing the value on your platform.”

Brilliant. Reddit looks out at a crowd of people at a packed show and says “ok we could lose 5%”. But those are the ones who return another night as musicians. And you cant run a music venue long term with open mic 7 nights per week.

Or you just stood around waiting for a person for 2 hours with no way to learn if they were running late or blowing you off or dead.
