Micro$oft, as we used to say in the old times…

ChatGpt writes a song about todays Internet
In the land of Big Brother, where they watch every move, They promise you freedom, but they've got something to prove, You're thinking you're free, but it's a digital ruse, With every click, every like, every view, they abuse. They say it's all free, just sign up, no cost, But they're dealing in data, your privacy lost. Yeah, your likes, your dreams, your soul's the cost, In this world of 1984, we're all just exhaust. (Chorus) If it's free, you're the product, in the corporate play, You're just a pawn in the game they play, If it's subscription, you're still the prey, Either way, you're a product, every night and day. (Verse 2) Telescreens blaring, thought police on patrol, They're mining our minds, control is their goal. Newspeak is the language, they're on a roll, In this dystopian dream, they've got us in a stranglehold. No matter the price, no matter the fee, In this world, my friend, nothing is free. We're all commodities in their decree, In this world of 1984, that's the decree. (Chorus) If it's free, you're the product, in their wicked game, Just a cog in their machine, it's such a shame, Subscription or not, it's all the same, In the eyes of the corporation, you're just a name. (Bridge) They sell us convenience, they sell us lies, In this digital age, freedom's the prize. We're trading our souls, for their disguise, In this Orwellian nightmare, we've got to rise. (Chorus) If it's free, you're the product, it's their master plan, Wake up now and take a stand. Subscription or not, they've got the upper hand, It's time to break free from this corporate land. (Outro) In the heart of 1984, we find the truth, We're not products, we're the living proof. With every heartbeat, every word, every uncensored thought, We're breaking free from the chains they've wrought.

Meta and Twitter are social media companies. They have access to peoples tweets. It’s similar to having access to these messages you and me are typing, except many people use their own names there.

It’s not too bad privacy wise, just social messages.

Google on the other hand has the private searches of billions of people. Everything you put into a search engine because you are worried, afraid, sick, or curious about something.

Google records all this private activity and saves it under your personal profile, and then uses cookies to track every web site you are visiting on the web (using not only Google search but Google analytics cookies that exists on almost every website).

They also combine this data with whatever you are doing on your android phone, or what places you go to using Google maps, or what video meetings you are having with Google meets, what emails you have in Google Mail, what video you watch on YouTube, what calendar events you are having with Google calendar… And so on.

Then they feed all this data into algorithms designed to figure out what you are likely to do next. They sell this data to advertisers so they can target you with ads. They also send this data to American agencies like nsa to be stored and analyzed.

There is a giant difference here between Google and the other companies you mentioned. Google is literally watching moments from people’s entire lives, while the others only see your social media messages.

This is why Google is completely absurdly in it’s own class of anti-privacy. No other company has this amount of data about people’s every moment awake.

Now they use their dominant position to try and take over the entire web, so it’s not possible to escape them anymore using a different browser, blocking cookies and tracking, or using another search engine.

If everyone is forced to use their browser, we have lost everything good about the web.

They should be treated like the cancer to a free web they really are.

I haven’t done that but yes, it’s pretty much unheard of that the user can actually control what shows up in search if you come from Google-land.

For a conversation to happen, there must be trust. I don’t think anyone trusts them, so there is no attempt at serious communication.

They should be treated with contempt.

More like organic user reviews I would say.

Ah yes.

I also worry a bit about all these email aliases I use now. They do tie me to fastmail for the future. And if they would disappear, it would be a pain to replace. But that’s life. Have to take some risks. :)

That’s an apples to oranges comparison. Proton is not a web search engine.

Edit: But for email, sure. :)

Yup try it and set as default in the browser. You will start to see a lot of sites that never showed up in google also. They have these “listacles” in search results where they group relevant sites into a small list, which makes it super simple to go to them for results.

If you want a sample search, try “best tv shows 2023” or something like that.

It’s honestly why I’m paying for it.

I also pay for email for the same reason. :)

For email, Fastmail is just excellent. I use their email aliases function a lot. So you can one-click generate an email to use when you sign up on a service and when you don’t use that service anymore, delete the email address.

Makes it impossible for them to sign you up on advertising lists since you can just delete that email address if they annoy you.

Ah sorry, I misunderstood you. Yes they count as a search.

I don’t think you can compare pricing to Google. They make profits by combining any payment with selling your data for profit. There is no way Kagi can compete with that since they don’t sell your data.

To me, search is the most important thing I use the internet for. I just think it’s reasonable to pay a good competitor that doesn’t sell your data and provides excellent search. But if you can’t pay them, of course that’s fine. Maybe you need 10 dollars for something else. But for me, Im not in the financial zone where I even miss 10 dollars or notice it’s gone.

I understand if you can’t afford it. Money doesn’t grow on trees in this world. But Kagi has been very transparent about the reason for the costs - it’s what they need to charge to not lose money, since they don’t sell your user data or track you.

It’s unrealistic to think that having a search engine is free, and the reason Google is free is because it tracks you and sells your data to advertisers, and probably also makes sure you get search results that benefit those advertisers. It’s quite simply a bad choice to use an ad company to search the web.

Kagi also had a blog post about search usage, where they used googles search statistics to determine that the average person searches 3 or 4 times per day (90 to 120 times per month). This amount (100 searches) is free on Kagi.

300 searches costs 5 dollars.

If you are doing 1000 searches per month, that’s as much as myself and I work as a programmer / devops guy. We search a lot. That’s much more than the average person. We are in the top 1% actually. Nice to be there for something right? :) Cost for us is 10 dollars.

I couldn’t find anything about your claim that conversion would cost extra, not on the pricing page and not in the FAQ section. I also did a few conversation searches and there was no info about additional price. Can you link to where it says that?

That used to work until reddit started a war against it’s own moderators and made a lot of people leave to Lemmy.

Reddit is in a slow death spiral I believe.

Worth every dollar. The quality is so good that you will switch and forget Google exists. I haven’t used Google search in 6 months even once.

You will love it. I switched about 6 months ago and it’s wonderful. When I was using duckduckgo I had to use the !g keyword to search Google sometimes. With Kagi, it’s basically switch and you forget Google exists.

Set it as default and you will see what I mean.

It’s nice that they are trying to add new features and make it original in some way. But I will have to wait for Linux support, sadly.

It’s ideal for you since you don’t want to discuss it, yes.

I’ve noticed that there are tons of people who tries to tell others what to talk about, even what words they should use. What’s going on… :)

I think it’s a bit silly to have megathreads just because some users can’t scroll past posts that doesnt interest them.

I agree its not great with multiple threads but it’s also not the end of the world imo. Users want to talk about these things. Let them.

It’s not fun to post on megathreads because your comments get buried. At least it was like that on reddit.

I agree. :) Haven’t played a ubisoft game for ages…

Well to be fair, this is because of the stupid justice system in the US.

Just the term “afford to fight for it” is something that never should exist in a civilized society.

It’s difficult but worth the time if you have it. No other language creates programs with such guarantees for not having common memory bugs and performance like c.

Americans are generally quite stupid. Imagine asking private big tech to moderate what you can see online. :)

But it’s the same in every country. The large masses are clueless. If you ask Europeans, you would get the same response even though it’s Americans moderating it, which is even worse.

You know Microsoft is planning to put the next windows online and let people just access it? Same pattern here, people trusting big tech with their own privacy and integrity. So weird.

I haven’t heard the term “corporate sterialized inclusivity” before… But yes, the main issue with the show is maybe that.

It’s ok to get blow back, I don’t mind. But the feedback was stupid at first. Basically “you are racist because you don’t like the new star trek, it’s inclusive, don’t you get it?”.

There is good storytelling and there is shit storytelling and this show could as well take place on earth, as an episode of Charmed.

Yes makes sense. Then its a different thing and you can just be happy that they are happy.

At least I liked Orville. It gave me quite a few laughs. And bad acting is fine when it’s supposed to be a bit funny.

I’m only on the end of season 1 but it’s so super cheesy. He basically went “let anger into my heart”, then proceeded to hit the wall a few times, and now he can’t control his emotions anymore.

It’s so teenage level, all of this. They could have created something great here but they clearly didn’t care, and just put C level actors everywhere and hoped the audience wouldn’t notice how bad it is.

The previous episode was about how the entire ship became like in the book the doctor was reading, followed by some horrible acting from the entire crew.

Yeah I guess I don’t know why I am watching anymore. I shouldn’t.

Yeah I’m at that stage too. I used to have a lot of time for projects but as an adult, I really have to be selective with my time and energy.

Yeah I felt there is nothing interesting going on to keep my attention. They are exploring space - there should be tons of really interesting scenarios. Remember the entire Q thing with time travel and different consequences from all that, both morally and technologically. It made me feel really excited and interested in the choices that were made.

But in the last few shows, it’s just missing. The big focus seems to be on throwing as many different races into the show as possible and make that the actual focus of the show. It was never the focus previously.

The crew here is annoying. For example, they keep reminding eachother how they are the best of what star fleet has to offer, but they can’t act worth a damn. When she ship is being threatened to be destroyed, they don’t look like they even care.

So I think you are right, it’s not the wokeness that is so annoying but it becomes so much of the focus since there is no good story or acting going on.

If I have to watch “strong black woman” for the 100th time, it does tend to get really annoying. Can we have a good story in star trek please? That was the point of the previous shows at least.

Imagine not having reading comprehension or intelligence to even read a post properly.

I love sci fi, and I loved these star treks very very much, they are excellent:

  • Star Trek Voyager
  • Star Trek Enterprise
  • Star Trek New Generation
  • Star Trek Deep Space Nine

However, these ones are awful:

  • Stat Trek Strange New Worlds
  • Star Trek Picard
  • Star Trek Discovery

I think the entire “woke” thing has become way too much in the last ones, to the degree that it’s annoying to watch.

I think it’s similar to watching TV shows with too much sex. I mean, it’s not enjoyable, it’s just annoying. Or watching Fox News for 5 minutes and wanting to jump off a cliff.

Already have, sadly. It was the only one I liked since Star Trek Enterprise.

So much shit in the latest star treks that has much more to do with promoting the “woke” culture of 2020 and nothing to do with space exploration or story telling.

I think it’s hard to describe why we don’t like something. I think part of it is because of the annoying personalities. But they won’t be annoying to you, or you would have picked up on it by now.

I think most people seem to like the show. It’s doing better than Picard I think, which was also crap in my opinion.

I did like the Orville though, because it did have some actually funny scenes and decent stories.
