I’m sure many of you are already aware that YouTube has been rolling out anti-adblock detection for Chrome users for a few weeks now.
Today, as a long time Firefox user with the fantastic uBlock Origin extension installed, I got my first anti-adblock popup on the platform. Note that this may not happen to you personally for a while, but it is inevitably coming for everyone.
Thankfully, the fine folks at uBlock Origin have already advised a simple workaround (on Reddit, yuck!) which I will duplicate in a simplified form below for your convenience. I have tested it on Firefox and it is working fine for me (so far).
PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THIS POST.
Update uBO to the latest version (1.52.0+) . <== The extension itself, for technical improvements. You do this in your browser.
Remove your custom config / reset to defaults. <== This means removing your custom filters (or disabling My filters) and disabling ALL additional lists you’ve enabled. It might be quicker to make a backup of your config and restore to defaults instead.
Force an update of your Filter Lists. <== This is within the extension. Lists are what determine what’s blocked or not. How to update Filter lists: Click 🛡️ uBO’s icon > the ⚙ Dashboard button > the Filter lists pane > the 🕘 Purge all caches button > the 🔃 Update now button.
Disable all other extensions AND your browser’s built-in blockers. <== No need to uninstall, just disable them. They might interfere with our solutions.
Make sure you follow all 4 points above. If you’re seeing the message, it’s likely due to your custom config (either additional lists or separate filters in My filters).
Restarting your browser afterwards may help too.
Once you’ve gotten rid of the issue on default settings, you can slowly start restoring your config (if you really need it). Do it gradually, to easier find out what was causing the issue in the first place. Once you find the culprit, simply skip it in your config.
If you want to use Enhancer for YouTube*, you have to* disable its adblocking*.*
May the force uBlock Origin be with you!

Grayjay for the win! Was launched last month, Louis Rossman is a blessing.
Finally some fucking good news 😤
reVanced and SmartTubeNext are the way. Both are still working flawlessly.
Also Clipious and Invidious
reVanced stopped working for most people a while ago unfortunately
You’re thinking of YouTube Vanced. Revanced works perfectly fine and is constantly updated.
I switched to FreeTube and it’s pretty good so far. I’m missing a few things and better browser integration but it’s great.
thankfully i already stopped watching youtube thru the website and now use freetube on pc and grayjayy on android
Does noscript block the anti adblock rollout?
Oh good, round 3. I really can’t wait to have 10 posts each time Google updates its ad blocking code.
This post is 4 months old my dude. Maybe the problem is that you don’t know how to filter your feed?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
No issues on Brave so far.
Same here. Not sure why you got downvoted for posting your personal experience. Like others have said already, this is not going to effect everyone, everywhere at the same time. YMMV
He got downvoted for mentioning Brave, which is like using a hardened Windows instead of Linux around these parts
Why the hate for Brave?
Brave is a shady company. There’s a lot of FUD around it, but I’ve done extensive research and mostly come to the conclusion people are overreacting.
Some things you should know, however (in case you don’t already):
Brave is a better “out of the box” experience for most normal privacy focused users, but a tinkered Firefox will almost always be better.
I use linux and brave together without any cryptocurrency adds and I don’t give a fck about opinion of others about Brave. I know about controversy and it always was better option for me than any other browser. Especially Firefox, which has more telemetry than Brave. If you use Firefox and say to me that Brave is worse, you’re as naive as people trusting in their government.
If you want true control use Librewolf and tor, no google, apple, use Graphene os, don’t subscribe to anything, pay in crypto prepaid by atms, turn on airplane mode after every call/sms, don’t turn on gps and even better use wifi only or god damned stupid phone. This is for disidents and people in oppression… Don’t be stupid and don’t exaggerate.
These things offer like no control or customizability. Use Firefox and run the setup you want
Lol That’s awesome, less of a workaround and more of a “we fixed it already, but whatever you’re using probably hasn’t caught up yet”.

It might be that your uBO version is already blocking them, I’m not sure how you test that though, which is probably why they use the whole “not out in your region” comeback when it’s already discussed how uBO already defeats them (just like it does on your average bottom of the barrel porn-ad ridden sites that employ this exact same tactic).
The secure aspect of Anti-adblockers was defeated long ago, the security theater part is still holding on though, maybe this YouTube thing will finally kill that part as well.
Yeah they’re doing AB testing right now
“(on Reddit (/comments/). yuck!)”
Guys, we fucking get it. You hate mainstream apps like reddit but the solutions aren’t on Lemmy until someone finds them elsewhere like reddit.
Do we really need to emphasize our hate for something every damn time we make a post. Thanks for the solution but why couldn’t you have just posted the solution.
God I hate Lemmy, they want a bigger user base to stay away from content controlled by big corps and to move to federated content but will shove their ideals on the community every time and that is what keeps pushing people wanting to stay here away. We don’t need to hear about FOSS and Linux every time. And we get it. We hate reddit that is why the user base moved here.
EDIT: God I love Lemmy.
Nice try spez. Kindly fuck off now.
🖕
That you, Spez?
That’s the Reddit way.
We did it reddit!
Fuck reddit and fuck you
I use both, don’t you? Obviously OP does as well. You’re talking shit about Lemmy, they’re talking shit about Reddit here.
Hooray for the freedom to shittalk! (Works on both platforms!)
I’m always down for downtalking corporate bullshit - YouTube & Reddit have both done some almost-Elon levels of managerial idiocy as of late & it should be heard how people feel about it.
Just relax mate. This was an unnecessary comment.
Thank you for the comprehensible instructions!
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work with Edge (yet?).
Me, sadly, as it is the only browser installed on my work pc. We can’t install any other programs (working with highly sensitive data).
EDIT: It works now :D
that sounds like it’s going to blow up at some point
Now look up how old your hospital’s systems are which store all your health records lol
I work in government and spend all day remoting into judges’, prison officers’, and social workers’ PCs. The most sensitive material you can imagine and all of it on windows.
Uh, if it’s work:
A. Shouldn’t you be working?
Or
B. Ads while I get paid, doesn’t seem too bad.
C. Principle of the matter dammit!
YouTube has a lot of great instructional and educational content. I use it at work fairly regularly for that.
Yeah, I was just joking around, surprised people took it that seriously. I mean if there are ads, I am getting paid either way…
I noticed that the best of the educational and instructional videos, particularly from the companies using it for training and demonstration have turned off ads anyways. Youtube is not quite yet forcing ads on everyone are they?
If you can run EXE filles on your work PC and you just don’t have administrator rights to install software, you should be able to download a portable version of your favorite browser.
I used portable Firefox, Chrome, Notepad++, Eclipse, Sysinternals stuff and many more without problems that way.
Disclaimer: Althought this probably works technically, it might still violate some company policy.
Can confirm. I did that at college. Yes, it technically violated the policy, but even though my lecturers and everyone else knew, nobody batted an eye. When OP is working with sensitive data, however, things coupd be different.
If it’s a significantly controlled environment then executable whitelisting is likely in place. With my employer not only are applications whitelisted but even limiting it to specific versions of them. Makes for a bureaucratic nightmare if you want to do something outside the approved channels, but good luck ever pulling a drive-by on one of their machines.
F for our brother
Quit your iob
Ask your admin if he can allow other browsers.
Why would a sysadmin do extra work so someone can watch YouTube lol
