Have you used fish? The built-in fuzzy matching works pretty well for me. Wondering if there’s any reason to add atuin in. Sync seems like a negative to me more than a positive.

This is a fantastic write-up, thanks for sharing!

I use Jenkins for work, unfortunately, so I have plenty of experience

FYI, Jenkins has an endpoint to validate the pipeline without running it, and there’s a VSCode extension to do this without leaving the editor: https://www.jenkins.io/blog/2018/11/07/Validate-Jenkinsfile/

FYI you can (sorta) redirect searches from the start menu: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-let-google-handle-cortana-web-search-results-windows-10

Mine all go to DDG in FF

The WinAmp maybe sorta open-sourcing is interesting. I’ve never used it (aside from downloading it to get MilkDrop working in Foobar2000).

I feel the same way. Designing good, opinionated APIs is HARD, but it also provides the best experience for both the author and the consumer.

  • Prettier is the undisputed king of JS formatters because it has no options by design. You set and forget.
  • One of the reasons iOS is so successful is because they lock down their APIs and put strict standards on apps, making it hard to write something that doesn’t at least look good and slot into the OS well.

Among other examples.

In a world where your IDE and maybe also compiler should warn you about using unicode literals in source code, that’s not much of a concern.

VSCode (and I’m sure other modern IDEs, but haven’t tested) will call out if you’re using a Unicode char that could be confused with a source code symbol (e.g. i and ℹ️, which renders in some fonts as a styled lowercase i without color). I’m sure it does the same on the long equals sign.

Any compiler will complain (usually these days with a decent error message) if someone somehow accidentally inserts an invalid Unicode character instead of typing ==.

These names are really fun! Good ones to add to my list…

Cool to see the Immich team going full time. I don’t use it personally but I hear great things

Not my website. Interested to see how this will play out though!

You mean like git sparse-checkout? Admittedly experimental but useful

Actually I’m guessing this is a localization failure

Introducing selfh.st/apps, a Directory of Self-Hosted Software
As a long time follower, this is pretty exciting! I've definitely been looking for something along these lines.

Also, I was just looking this morning at writing something like that Fitbit/influxDB integration for YNAB (You Need a Budget) for visualization in grafana!

I usually don’t pay much attention to the “new software” section, but PerPlexed looks pretty cool! It never occurred to me that it would be possible to create an alternative Plex UI from scratch like that

You should reach out to the authors! I have no clue how they create their “new” section

Also, that CLI trick is crazy! Never knew that and I’m a fairly proficient shell user.

Anyone use authentik? Seems useful, most of my homelab services are unsecured ATM (just local only/vpn)

The thought of colocating my homelab is intriguing… But also sounds like way too much effort and money

Also, I like the “alternative to” blogs in https://blog.while-true-do.io/spotlight-alternatives-for-google-dns/?ref=selfh.st - it’s an interesting series.

Spotted homepage on there - might switch my dashboard from Homarr to that, give it a try. Anyone used it (or other dashboarding software) before?

Also never seen BaseRow before - anyone used that over NocoDb? Comparisons?

Just discovered OliveTin - I was thinking about writing something like this ages ago, but was always too concerned about security. Anyone ever use it or anything else similar?

Happy to see ActivityPods, never heard of it before but was thinking that would be cool!

I don’t think they’re necessarily meant to be self-hosted, although they can be. The point is to decentralize and take control over your data. Will happily explain more when I sober up :)

Does anyone know anything about Solid pods?
I heard about this project years ago. Cool concept: standardized, interchangeable storage + identity that can be plugged into arbitrary apps. The idea is that your identity is tied to your data, and your data can be hosted anywhere so you can retain control over your data or use a simple provider. It was also created by Tim Berners-Lee, creator of the web. However, it doesn't seem to be gaining traction anywhere, even in the already-niche self-hosting community. From the GitHub (which was hard to find on the website!) I could see that it's being actively developed, including a new website redesign, but everything else seems stagnant. Their newsletter has no updates since 2021. There are only a small handful of apps listed on the site and most of them haven't been maintained since 2019 or earlier, and a lot are just things like "solid pod explorer" or "demo app". Anyone had any experience with it? Or know more about the situation? I would love to see this become more widely used.

Some excellent content this week. Some of my highlights:

  • Plex continues its BS, alienating the users who want to actually use their product
  • Fun “fediverse for dummies” writeup

Some really good content in there this week!

  • The Plex monetization continues to be concerning, although it’s a good thing they’re almost profitable
  • Cloudflare security breach was interesting to read about
  • Morphos server seems like good software - I never thought of self hosting a file converter, but I’m always so sketched out by the free online ones
  • Might finally set up tailscale, who knows!
  • Never heard of watch - always thought I had to write a watcher (e.g. with a node library). That’s massively useful honestly

I don’t remember exactly, it was around 2 years ago. It was easy to set up, but I found the feature set to be lacking some essentials, and I ran into a couple of big bugs. Couldn’t really replace my airtable setup yet. Happy to give it another try though!

Anyone used NocoDb recently? Last time I tried to get it running, it was too buggy to be useful

Update: I finally installed RYOT, and wow is it slow, and resource intensive. It’s using more than 20% of the CPU on my NAS when it isn’t even open! Might switch to Media Tracker…

I was wondering why everyone kept talking about Media Tracker being fast. I finally installed RYOT, and wow is it slow, and resource intensive. It’s using more than 20% of the CPU on my NAS when it isn’t even open!

I just unrelatedly installed Homarr today actually, was getting a little annoyed at memorizing the ports for services running on my Synology…

I use Backblaze B2 for my backups. Storing about 2tb, comes out to about $10/mo, which is on par with Google One pricing. However, I get the benefit of controlling my data, and I use it for tons more than just photos (movies/shows etc).

If you want a cheaper solution and have somewhere else you can store off-site (e.g. family/friend’s house), you can probably use a raspberry pi to make a super cheap backup solution.

Ooh, ryot is really nice! And seems to have a similar feature set to Media Tracker, plus exercise. It’s also maintained actively.

Have you used it before? Any warnings?

I don’t really care about games (GOG galaxy works pretty well for that) but looks like flox also supports movies now, maybe a recent change?

I was looking for watched content, but only because I didn’t think about music before! Will play around with it, thanks for the rec

Self-hosted media tracker recommendations?
I'm looking to keep track of my watchlist/watched list. Found [flox](https://github.com/devfake/flox), [watcharr](https://github.com/sbondCo/Watcharr), and [MediaTracker](https://github.com/bonukai/MediaTracker). Does anyone have experience with these or other alternatives?
