I completely forgot about the Linux Upskill Challenge! I should have mentioned I’ve been running Linux as my desktop operating system for almost 3 years, and I’ve been tinkering with it quite a lot throughout so I’m quite familiar and very comfortable with the command line. I shoukd go through the Linux upskill challenge so I can fill in any knowledge gaps though. Thanks for reminding me!

What would tools/services would you recommend for hosting without self hosting?
Hello. I've been trying to get familiar with self hosting. The only roadblock I have is I'm unable to do so because I am a university student living in student accommodation where it is against WiFi policy to host anything. And currently I don't even have my raspberry pi with me. My laptop is relatively low specced, so I can't exactly do VMs, but I want to learn more about hosting stuff and the services I can host. I recently signed up for a free managed Nextcloud instance because I wanted to see what it's like and whether I'd be interested in hosting my own. I know VPS-es are an option but they can get pretty costly, especially for a student like me. Do you have any recommendations, including any cheapz reliable VPS-es for a UK student to dip his toes into self-hosting? Thank you. P.S I know this isn't exactly self-hosting as I'm technically reliant on third party hardware but it's the only option in my situation.

The Megathread is a godsend from the god who took pirates as his favourite creation: The Flying Spaghetti Monster!

Now that I’ve said that, it actually makes a lot of sense, so… R’Amen. lol

Wow, people are selfish bastards who will almost always put their needs before those of others. Who would have thought? I’m not defending him, I’m attacking you for expecting more of people.

And don’t pretend you wouldn’t have done the same. Put yourself in his position and tell me you wouldn’t have done the same thing, or maybe even handled the situation worse than he did.

Article: Disable your adblocker.

Me: Understandable. Have a nice day

(I’m not reading this if I have to disable my adblocker)

I don’t know how to feel about this. On one hand, I want Cloudflare to suffer, but on the other hand, they do offer ddos protection for a lot of useful pirate sites.

Simple: it has nothing to do with DRM (unless the DRM is actively making the experience worse, which Denuvo is known to do) and everything to do with creating a good, unique and enjoyable game that doesn’t feel like a live-service-for-no-reason, microtransaction-riddled, bug-infested, alpha-quality-software-presented-as-release, cash grab, which is what most triple A studios seem to focus on creating these days.

I downloaded 2 seasons of 1 tv show and 3 seasons of another in the last month, but I used direct download.

So, no. I wouldn’t.

remembers the repacks from 3 weeks ago

Nevermind.

I have one of these on a billboard near my house. Every time I feel sad, I just look up to it as I’m passing by and it gives me a chuckle. I think they actually updated it recently. These posters are in the UK for anyone wondering. And this one in particular is in the London Underground.

If only. I’m a student living in student accommodation. I can’t set up a NAS because hosting things on the network is against their policy, and I also wouldn’t feel comfortable having that type of hardware in my room. And if electricity bills skyrocket because of me, I’ll be forced to pay them.

What’s a safe place to buy storage online? I’ve seen horror stories of an sd card in a drive enclosure, and modifying the storage to make it appear larger than it is.

Are cheap

Yeah, right. I know they’re cheaper than they were but they can’t be that cheap.

finds a high-speed 2tb m.2 from Kingston (a brand I trust) for £120

I stand corrected.

I’ve just realized there’s an animated series on Youtube, that I’ve had a really hard time (read: impossible) finding anywhere else, and if LEGO (yes, I’m talking about Ninjago) decides to delete these videos from their channels, the OG seasons are nowhere to ve found as far as I can tell. Yes, there are some cartoon streaming services but those are few in number and getting fewer, so I wouldn’t bet on them or any new ones that spring up having that content available in 5-10 years. And that’s worrying. Time to download all 15 seasons and store them somewhere! (oh shit, I don’t have enough space, do I)

Edit: found them on a downloads site from the piracy megathread, but only Seasons 1-11. I’ll get them all soon enough.

Edit 2: The first 11 seasons from that website come up to just over 105GB and I don’t have the space. Do I buy a 256GB USB/ Drive to store this at? I’m scared that I’m getting to the point of becoming a data hoarder. Not too long ago, I didn’t know what I’d do with my single 32GB USB, now I have added a 128GB one, and a 64GB Ventoy usb to the mix, and I still don’t have enough. Wtf?

I’m hoping we get a persistent jailbreak for the PS4. The current one is not persistent, so I didn’t bother. But I have a 10.50 FW one laying around, just in case.

I just started using a namecheap domain that I registered a few weeks ago, and this title scared me for a minute lol

After their CEO being detained and arrested in France because of the illegal activity on his platform, it was a matter of time.

These publishers’ names are:

Hachette,

Penguin Random House,

Wiley,

and

HarperCollins

Time to never buy any book from them again. I’m moving on to pirating ebooks and audiobooks. Sorry JRR and Christopher Tolkien (may you rest in peace), but I’m not buying any more of your books because they were published by HarperCollins. And I’m also not buying a lot of other books too.

Oh fuck. I was just doing a nostalgia-driven rewatch of some shows and they cut me halfway through Total Drama. When it went down, I found the show on Youtube! And just watched it there. But I had other shows to watch too…

Meta, Alphabet, Netflix, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, … (what’s the other NA)?

In my experience, it really depends. Like, for the Arch Linux iso it’s basically the same, but for some more niche distros, there might not be many seeds so direct download from a local mirror might be faster.

Infinite money glitch (if you can find enough idiots to buy them)

Good luck running a tiling WM like Hyprland with a wonderful Terminal emulator like Foot or Kitty, with a customisable file manager like Thunar or Krusader, with a terminal music player like CMUS…

I can keep on going. But the TLDR is that it’s MY setup not Microsoft’s.

Wrong. I and other devs can modify free software to make it work on Linux. You can’t do that with Photoshop and Premiere

I usually go for 720p to 1080p, as my monitor is at 1080p. I wouldn’t really compromise quality further. But even if I had a 4k screen, I probably wouldn’t go for 4k cuz downloads take too long. What I’m saying is I like balance

I feel almost obliged to ask: what are you running on this monster of a setup?

Is Hugo good for, say, a portfolio website? I know its good for blogging, but I’ve been thinking about a simple portfolio website hosted on Gitlab pages (I wish I could selfhost, but I can’t due to a lack of hardware and restrictions from my student accommodation and their network policy), and was wondering if Hugo would be a good choice for a portfolio website, maybe just having one page per project or something like that?

Can you give me a tldr or a source for a tldr of setting up real-debrid with stremio?

Fair point. But even if they were legit in any way, I’m already positioned not to trust them.

I really like the idea of user-friendly selfhosting (which is essentially what this company is offering, I mean hell, I’ve had similar business ideas floating around in my head too) BUT any company that has:

  1. an in-the-know marketing team

  2. Any employees that are somewhat technical enough (which should be guaranteed for a company with this sort of product

  3. NOT a scam

Would know what a HUGE risk reputation-wise it is to showcase crypto-related selfhosting on the FRONT page. It’s like a “build-a-red-flag” or “destroy-our-reputation” speedrun. Even IF you want to offer this, anyone in-the-know with at least 3 braincells would bury this deep in the page and make it difficult to find (if they were well-intentioned in the first place) because at this point anything crypto, especially being the main offering, is a huge red flag.

If instead, they offered a nextcloud instance, for example, or Pihole as an adblocker, or some other good and common services, maybe a selfhosted VPN (or maybe not, because of the stupid and misleading ads of VPN companies), they would be seen as 100% more legit.

Edit: Just checked their marketplace and they have:

Jellyfin

Vaultwarden

FreeGPT-2

Gitea

Matrix

Nextcloud

Their own service for TOR pages

Ghost (a blogging platform)

SearxNG (a search engine)

I mean, add Wordpress, Pihole and some other friendly services, and advertise THOSE!!! Build your own Google (SearxNG)! Build your own MS Office online and OneDrive (Nextcloud)! Build your own Github (Gitea)! Build your own Discord (Matrix)! Build your own password manager (Vaultwarden)! Build your own Netflix (Jellyfin)!

Only AVs worth your time are:

common sense

an open source ad and tracker blocker

MS Defender if on Windows

ClamAV (or nothing like most people) if on Linux

What do you do when the check is not there for some games? Is there an alternative because the bug you’re describing is a thing I’ve been dealing with on many occasions
