I never understand somebody just simping for a corporation like that. You can be a fan of their stuff and dislike how they run the company. Being a Mario or Zelda fan doesn’t mean you have to stick up for terrible decisions made by suits.

It’s a website where you can buy music. I prefer having music in OGG or Opus format, and most of the time you can only get MP3. Bandcamp gives you the option to download your music in several formats, and one of them is OGG.

That’s starting to change, because I can find more file-sharers who are using FLAC as storage becomes cheaper. Then I can convert FLAC to Opus. However, Bandcamp also gives you the option to stream music from their app, and it’s nice to have access to so much music on my phone.

Using the term “piracy”, instead of “filesharing”, was always pro-corporate framing. In his 2010 essay “Ending the War on Sharing”, Richard Stallman wrote:

When record companies make a fuss about the danger of “piracy”, they’re not talking about violent attacks on shipping. What they complain about is the sharing of copies of music, an activity in which millions of people participate in a spirit of cooperation. The term “piracy” is used by record companies to demonize sharing and cooperation by equating them to kidnaping, murder and theft.

Near was a target of KiwiFarms, a messageboard focused on harassing people for fun. There’s a pretty good article about it here.

If you join a small instance, the chances are higher that it will a) be poorly maintained and b) fold quicker, forcing you to find another instance to join and re-subscribe to all your communities.

Ares was developed by Near (rip).

I’ll never quit being angry that the most brilliant mind in emulation was driven to suicide by organized cyberbullying.

Announcing your sarcasm defeats sarcasm. If your sarcasm can’t be inferred through context or some other means, the solution is simple…just don’t be sarcastic.

I have a Ryzen 5600G (with Radeon Graphics built in) and 16 GiB of RAM, and it runs fine (with a few hiccups during cutscenes). I’m also running Linux, though.

Wow, that’s stupid. I consider ripping songs from YouTube to be the modern equivalent of taping songs off the radio. The quality is poor.

It isn’t piracy, either. It’s filesharing.

See Richard Stallman, “Ending the War on Sharing”:

When record companies make a fuss about the danger of “piracy”, they’re not talking about violent attacks on shipping. What they complain about is the sharing of copies of music, an activity in which millions of people participate in a spirit of cooperation. There are specific folders that prod.keys and the firmware need to go into.

Sooo, over 10 years ago, somebody came up with the idea for a hybrid board game: Golem Arcana. It’s a board game…that requires an app to play.

Of course, the app was proprietary, and it’s no longer supported, so now the game is dead, because the app won’t run on modern phones.

Like I said, I’ve never ran into this, and I’ve been using it for about 20 years. Politics never comes up, because I’m almost never chatting with other users.

I’m not aware of any neo-Nazis (literal or otherwise). I don’t spend any time in the chat rooms, though.

Could somebody complain to your ISP? Yes.

Is this likely to happen? No.

I’ve been using slsk for about 20 years, and I’ve never gotten a warning about it. If I start torrenting, I’ll get a warning from my ISP tomorrow. I think that it’s considered too obscure to be worth monitoring.

constantly telling others they should “Just Use Linux” is no different than a stereotypical vegan trying to get everyone to go vegan or a craft beer snob using it as their only personality trait

Okay, wow. So what you’re saying is actually much worse than what I originally thought. You believe that saying “Torturing animals is wrong” is the same as saying “Craft beer is better than mass-produced beer”.

I think if somebody could benefit from it, I’m going to recommend it. Taking the attitude of “You’re a normie, so obviously you can’t appreciate Linux like I do” is condescending.

Which one? The lemmy.ml community sucks because there are so many tankies, but according to the Community-Browser there are at least half a dozen other general meme groups.
