One would think the audience is smart enough to read between the lines, but then again, the audience doesn’t understand the difference between the internet and services on the internet, so I suppose I wasn’t smart enough to recognize that I couldn’t be so generous. Lemmy – or what was originally known as Usenet – was created in 1979. It predates the internet as we know it.
Not sure where you think email and FTP come into play. Usenet began with UUCP and later NNTP.
