Schools are heading for a more drastic decline than the 35 per cent intended cut in study permit applications for universities and colleges.

International students are charged exorbitant rates compared to native Canadians.

The schools use international students as a major source of income.

The issue is how to rejigger the universities’ income streams so that they can keep themselves afloat without that. We can start by looking into why some seem to be having more trouble than others.

Or put another way, Canadian citizens have a portion of their university fees subsidized by the various levels of government that those same citizens (and their familes) pay taxes to.

Foreign students (and their families) have not contributed to that tax base, therefore aren’t eligible to benefit from it and have to pay the full cost themselves.

Universities prioritize international students over Canadian students because of the revenue potential and they’ll admit less Canadian students and hold more spaces reserved for International.

The only solution is proper government funding as education is already prohibitively expensive.

I’d like to see high demand jobs have education funded significantly by employer contributions and government over students. Medical and skilled technology and trades. Sorry art majors, you pay full freight to indulge your passion.

True and that’s the same for universities in other countries.

Let the whole system collapse under the weight of its own bloated administration.

Headline is misleading. They are expecting to see enrolment down 45%, and the article doesn’t really give much in terms of numbers other than that.

The actual number is 45%, but the feds only projected 35%.

The new policy limits the number of student visa applications the government would accept into processing, and it’s expected that will result in a 35 per cent drop in the number of students in 2024 compared to last year. Source

Here is the history of why universities started relying so heavily on foreign student enrollment (non-paywall link - https://ghostarchive.org/archive/dh065 )

Canadian universities are expected to see international student enrolment dropping by at least 45 percent from last year, a more drastic decline than the 35 percent

They are expecting to see a 45% decline. Based on the wording, it looks to be projections rather than actual numbers?

Exactly. The rules haven’t fully taken effect yet. Infact international student numbers are currently spiking by those wishing to beat the crackdown.

Time for single payer post-secondary then I guess.
