China, show me that you aren’t trying to control Canadians of Chinese descent against their will through things like Overseas police and surveillance, then we’ll talk.

Innocent until proved guilty. Unless you’re Chinese. Then you have to prove you’re innocent. It’s the Canadian way!

They’ve been proven guilty time and time again for decades. There’s entire Wikipedia articles about just the last ten years of them interfering with Canadian elections and influencing MPs, but it goes back way farther than that. Remember the collapse of Nortel? That was the fucking Chinese.

It’s getting more media attention because more of it is coming to light, and people are sick of it.

I can understand Canadians.

I mean, what has China done to earn a positive view? A lot of countries do their own “public relations” to improve their soft power. Essentially a country with a favourable image can win over foreign investments and negotiate favourable trade deals. Examples of that would be Thailand and Pad Thai (invented by the government who also pay for thai restaurants to be opened internationally), and South Korea and kpop which is heavily subsidized by the government hoping they can produce #1 hits internationally.

The opposite of soft power is hard power. Essentially threatening countries with military action and economic sanctions. China is very heavy on the hard power and it has ruined its image. They’re not the only ones. USA, Russia, UAE, all flex their hard power to get what they want.

Hasn’t China been mostly retaliatory/maintaining status quo in it’s use of hard power?

Hate to say it, but the West hasn’t been kind to China. There’s no reason to expect China to be kind in return.

How the Meng Wengzhou affair went down in Canada speaks volumes about how the CCP does things. It’s not like anti China sentiment started suddenly, nor is it a fair and competitive rival.

They’re not the only ones. USA, Russia, UAE, all flex their hard power to get what they want.

The US does a lot of soft power too. Actually they just have a lot of power. Hard power works well for Russia historically because they’re so mercenary about it and so aren’t a threat to anyone that can fight back (present miscalculation aside). China on the other hand bullies everyone all the time.

Like, they’ve pissed on us specifically plenty, and we’re a random secondary power on the other side of a hemisphere of ocean. There was no reason to do that.
