The two mainstream ones are out of development. I live under rocks, but not so many rocks that I don’t know this.

I was hoping for either a backup of them as they were, or some fork(s) that continued development.

I’ve been playing using the latest forks setup on the Fitgirl torrents of Switch games. Started with The new Zelda and Unicorn Overlord, then grabbed some other games. The folder comes with a launcher to both emulators, I customized the whole thing to be my own Switch central, and updated the Ryujinx build with the last “official” one on the Internet Archive.

Other than that, this thread has good recommendations for followup projects to both. The megathread has places to download the games themselves individually.

There are still torrents of yuzu and ryujinx going around.

I use Arch BTW, so I just use ryujinx from the AUR. The upstream git repo was updated to one that is in active development and is working better than ever.

Here are the latest stable releases for all platforms

Wait, they revived Ryujinx? Wonder if it has all of the patches that didn’t get merged before the shutdown…

From the repo:

This fork is intended to be a QoL uplift for existing Ryujinx users. This is not a Ryujinx revival project. This is not a Phoenix project.

Just look at the amount of contributors and releases since the fork. Its more than just an archive.

Suyu, it’s the continuation/fork of Yuzu:

Also Azahar, the continuation/fork of Citra:

Suyu is just a renamed Yuzu.

As soon as Yuzu wrecked by Nintendo; They took the source code, changed the name to Suyu and then done little to no changes to it.

They also caused lots of drama within their own Discord. One of the people who were involved, left because of threats, issues with the “developers” and overall childish behavior.

What about sudachi?

Sudachi was an actual fork and really in development by the developer. However from what, I remember, he quit developing it because of continuously threats, insults and no appreciation from the community.

Oh did not know that, sad to hear.

They did remove traffic to the old Yuzu domains though, which now are in the hands of Nintendo, used to monitor which users use emulators.

Do you have other suggestions for promising successor forks?

I have been told about GreemDev which is a fork of Ryujinx and still being in development. But I honestly, don’t know much about it (have not been keeping myself up to date with it).

Though so far both the original Yuzu and Ryujinx are still working pretty great. Some small issues happens like crashes with Mario & Luigi brothership but people found work-arounds for that on Ryujinx; changing CPU to ‘‘software’’ for Mario & Luigi brothership (which hits the FPS a bit but overall stability and no crashes) and then set it back to its default for other games.

which now are in the hands of Nintendo, used to monitor which users use emulators.

No clue about Nintendo using its data to monitor users who use(d) emulators. They rather go after the developers of emulators (I think) unless someone is stupid enough to stream pirated games, tell viewers how to get them illegally and provoke Nintendo like this guy; Jesse Keighin, aka Every Game Guru.

Should I take this to mean Suyu hasn’t been and isn’t going to actually have updates and continued development? Basically making it the same as the version of Yuzu I still have installed on my PC (which was the last official update before the takedown)?

Yeah, see it like that. If it ever will actually get updated, you will hear about it due to all the drama they will be causing. But ever since Yuzu went down and they took the source code, nothing major has been done and only drama been caused.

Basically making it the same as the version of Yuzu I still have installed on my PC (which was the last official update before the takedown)?

Yeah, exactly.

Yes, that’s how it is. If you look at the commit history of yuzu, there’s basically only documentation changes. [1]

The joke about the Hydra many heads is just not true for software projects where only actually capable developers are able to meaningfully contribute. And those most likely already have a well paying job. Getting sued by Nintendo isn’t on anyones bucket list.

It’s sad that Nintendo has so much money that these devs keep caving, when they legally have a right to develop an emulator as long as they’re not distributing them with title keys and such.

I think a major reason they went so hard on this issue is the rumors that Switch 2 will have largely similar hardware and backward compatibility, including use of the same type of cartridges. As such emulating Switch 2 could easily just be a simple continuation of the work on the original Switch and it’s going to be a bad deal when their brand new system can be emulated on day one of release.

Personal opinion, it’s the natural result of them keeping their systems so low-end for so long, emulation of them is just easier than emulation of a PS5 or an Xbox. (do you even have to emulate xbox? aren’t they technically UWP windows apps?)

Totally agree. I think another crazy thing is that Nintendo knows how easy it is to emulate their latest games when developers are doing it without source code legally.

Like imagine if nintendo just saved the effort and money they otherwise would spend on R&D, manufacturing, shipping, and promotion, litigation on new consoles every so often and just released an official emulator instead. It would be so much better for the environment to let people use their own hardware and they could just focus mostly on making games.

At minimum, they could do both and have an option to sell games to people that don’t want another device to play media that their current devices already are capable of. And slowly phase out the console.

The whole point of consoles is to have an easy to use out of the box experience. As soon as 3rd party hardware gets involved, that goes out the window. Look at the epic failure of steam boxes. Rumors are that the next iteration will be first party hardware for exactly this reason.

Some websites don’t immediately work on my computer because I use Firefox with noscript. Does that mean I should have a special device from lego so I can reliably view Lego.com?

You are clearly not in this target market, and that’s okay. You will be able to emulate most of this on your handheld of choice anyway.

I like Nintendo games but I won’t buy new hardware to play them.

So that means om also not in Nintendo’s target market. Which means they loose my business. But, what if they just let me play their games on my hardware? Then I could like… Give them money for those games right? An official emulator would allow for that.

If I can currently play nintendos newest and best games on my Linux PC using an open source emulator that was legally made without the help of Nintendo or its source code. It would be much simpler for Nintendo to make that emulator than random open source devs without any real resources, documentation, or source code.

I’m with you man, I’m all in favor of the idea. It’s just that I’m pretty sure that Nintendo looked at that market and decided that the risk to their core business was too great to take the plunge.

If anything, I think they’d just release their first party titles on other platforms before releasing a first party emulator (though I’d welcome either).

I don’t think I’d buy a Switch either if I could get the games easily and reliably elsewhere, like on the steamdeck.

No because you disabled something which works OOB.

I used the links in https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Main_Page to get the latest builds

You can find the last appimage/flatpaks of yuzu on archive.org, they still work fine

What platform would you perhaps be interested in?
