OTTAWA – The federal government needs to issue another $500 benefit payment for low-income families struggling to keep a roof over their heads, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said Thursday. Singh was...

Doesn’t seem like enough to me, although he’s had success with these small asks (he got the GST credit doubled a few times now)

Tax rebates are an incredibly inefficient use of money.

$500 is better than $0 but I dont see it significantly changing the math involved. It might relieve the pressure a little for some people but only for a month, maybe 2.

Completely agree!

You’re looking at it wrong. It’s your money back, not free money. You pay 7% of everything (nearly) in the form of GST. And every year they give you back like .5% of it in the form in that lil’ rebate.

When the price of everything double or tripled over the last few years, so did your taxes. And what you pay in the form of GST.

I have no idea what this has to do with what I said.

Better tax the middle class to give out this benefit. /s

Stop giving out money and fix something instead so you DON’T have to give out money!

As someone who is well above the limit of getting any help these payouts pisses me off. The people that get them only have a temporary reprieve from their expenses and the money goes right into the pockets of the people profiting from the current high costs. Where if they actually fixed the problem everyone that is dealing with unaffordability would benefit long term while the people profiting off it would pay the cost.

It’s literally the second easiest thing they can do. Easiest is to do nothing.

I know it helps people in need, for like a week. But it does nothing in the long run.

Looking forward to when PP and the Cons take over and completely ignore this so they can fight the…LGBTQ+ community, public healthcare/education sectors, and poor people.

Are you trying to tell me a one time (okay second time) payout of $500 isn’t gonna solve anything?

These fucking chimps have a coalition government and still can’t do anything… politicians have to be some of the worst slimebags on the planet

I agree more needs to be done, but I’m always dumbfounded that the loudest criticism, even on Lemmy, seems to be against the NDP or about any NDP proposal more than any other party.

I voted NDP last election, so it’s not a bashing a party thing for me I dislike politicians regardless of their party, and I get really upset when the ones I vote for are fucking useless

The Liberals have been in power for way to long I’m good to let the NDP fuck things up

Also I was wondering what do you mean about even on Lemmy? Is this supposed to be a Liberal only platform?

It’s not a coalition, it is a Liberal government.

Right sorry I meant the supply and confidence deal which was supposed to have them working together on affordability issues, 2 “liberal” parties and they can’t even do that

Blame the liberals for that. The NDP is proposing very real solutions to housing affordability, and the liberals are ignoring them, and are wasting time on restricting international students instead. (Which, at least in Ontario, will not only do nothing for housing, but severely restrict post-secondary institutions income. Conservatives have made it so that’s the only realistic source now.)

A lot of international students are going to diploma mills, not the public institutions that make Canadian post-secondary great.

Restricting the income of private diploma mills is a good thing.

Absolutely I blame Trudeau he’s a fuckwit

I’m just amazed that even when it’s 2 supposed Liberal parties working together and these incompetent fucks still can’t pass Liberal issues

Okay you keep saying “two liberal parties”. The Liberals and the NDP are two different parties for a reason, and want different things. They also are passing things all the time. Don’t lump the NDP in as part of the problem, they’re the only ones proposing solutions.

Also, I didn’t say anything about Trudeau, largely because he isn’t the problem in the party. Freeland and the housing minister are the problems. But it’s pretty easy to guess at the leanings of anyone who starts yelling “fuck Trudeau” unprompted.

Oh yeah what are my leanings?

Okay sure fuck Freeland and the rest of the Liberal party, how’s that? He isn’t the problem? The guy that’s prime minister isn’t the problem okay…

No shit they are two different parties, they are still both Liberal parties, cuz they sure asf aren’t conservatives

Didn’t they get dental care passed? And child care?

Those two are massive.
