IRC is what works for me, but others don’t seem to be, mainly due to inline image previews and easy attachments…

Matrix/Element has been the best for our group. You could also give rocket chat or Mattermost a spin.

What’s wrong with discord? Don’t murder me for asking

I love Discord but they harvest tons of personal data. It’s very intrusive

makes sense! Was hoping to hear this because if discord pulls some reddit level crap I will bounce

They will at some point. Just like reddit, they kept raising money and growing indefinitely to corner the market. Sooner or later they will have to find some way to pay back their investors and this is when they will shit the bed.

With plenty of open source, privacy-respecting alternatives out there that can benefit from our support, why not just drop Discord now and avoid the shitshow before it happens?

There is the Matrix protocol, which you can use the Element app.

Also, if you want a more Discord-like alternative, there is Revolt

You’re drunk. Nobody said HTTPS

But we said IRC

Create a post

A place to share alternatives to popular online services that can be self-hosted without giving up privacy or locking you into a service you don’t control.

Rules:

  1. Be civil: we’re here to support and learn from one another. Insults won’t be tolerated. Flame wars are frowned upon.

  2. No spam posting.

  3. Posts have to be centered around self-hosting. There are other communities for discussing hardware or home computing. If it’s not obvious why your post topic revolves around selfhosting, please include details to make it clear.

  4. Don’t duplicate the full text of your blog or github here. Just post the link for folks to click.

  5. Submission headline should match the article title (don’t cherry-pick information from the title to fit your agenda).

  6. No trolling.
