IRC is what works for me, but others don’t seem to be, mainly due to inline image previews and easy attachments…
Matrix/Element has been the best for our group. You could also give rocket chat or Mattermost a spin.
What’s wrong with discord? Don’t murder me for asking
I love Discord but they harvest tons of personal data. It’s very intrusive
for me there isnt much wrong with discord, i just prefer foss and self-hosted where i can.

They will at some point. Just like reddit, they kept raising money and growing indefinitely to corner the market. Sooner or later they will have to find some way to pay back their investors and this is when they will shit the bed.
With plenty of open source, privacy-respecting alternatives out there that can benefit from our support, why not just drop Discord now and avoid the shitshow before it happens?
There is the Matrix protocol, which you can use the Element app.
