Negotiators from EU countries and the European Parliament agreed on a landmark new law late on Thursday (9 November) to restore at least 20% of Europe’s land and sea areas by 2030 and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050.

20% seems really low, but I guess it’s better than 0%

Not enough to achieve something, but enough to pretend that it might do something.

But 20% within 6 years seems absurdly high. Unless 25%+ of the land is already designated as ‘nature’ then all they need to do is not turn it into a parking lot. Still a pretty big ask.

“If you have an outcome-based approach and you do not reach the goals, then you have to apply additional measures […] whereas now you say okay, I tried, but unfortunately, it didn’t turn out the way I wanted to,” Paulus explained.

Politicians and producers love good ideas that will attract the public’s attention, but should be tweaked just enough to not be executed as intended.
