Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre did not mince words when talking about the mayors of Quebec’s two largest cities, describing Valérie Plante and Bruno Marchand as “incompetent” in a social media post Thursday.
That report showed a significant dip in the number of homes being built in Quebec in 2023 compared to the previous year.
Marchand also weighed in on X, accusing the Conservative leader of showing contempt for elected officials and everyone who works on housing issues in his city.
“When someone wants to become prime minister and says things like this, they’re basically telling François Legault and the Quebec government that they don’t care about the rules that are established,” he said.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, commenting in Iqaluit where he was signing an agreement to transfer powers to the Nunavut government, said Poilievre should apologize for showing such “contempt for Quebec elected officials.”
In a statement, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, called on Poilievre to apologize and described his comments as “unacceptable.”

There’s a reason we have all the checks and red tape that housing developments go through. Because once the developers leave, it’s the Municipality that has to maintain their infrastructure.
I can’t count the number of times I’ve worked on a subdivision project built in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, only to find a half dozen other problwms that we need to fix, at the cost of the City/Town, because it wasnt done right the first time.
Beyond that, those developments had no proper storm water treatment method, and now that we’ve successfully paved over half the swamps, we’re realizing that untreated storm water wreaks havoc on streams and rivers and lakes. Now we’ve got to build to deal with that, another big cost.
Like no shit stuff was easier to do back in the “good ol days”. They just didn’t bother figuring out the problems that we’re having to deal with now.
Exactly. I watched a YT video about Vancouver’s issues with stormwater because they paved over land that would have absorbed it. Not sure what they’re going to do about it but it won’t be cheap.
In Calgary growth is out of control to the point new communities have major drainage issues because they didn’t let the ground settle so they have massive puddles of melted snow and the city has to pay to extend all services so far from the heart of the city.
Building houses is easy.
Building houses properly with future considerations is hard.
Beating up on cityfolk and/or Easterners and/or Quebecois plays really well with Poillevre’s base.
That’s it. That’s all he has: riling up rubes in hopes he can ride a protofascist wave into office, Desantis-style. No policy, no ideas, nothing but white grievance. Modern conservatism, folks, just a big ol’ cup of white male Boomer tears.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

At least that’s one other trick variant in Poilievre’s book than the usual “it’s Trudeau’s fault”.
Unfortunately it seems to work. My hillbilly relatives in AB/SK eat it up.
Valerie plante is 10x the leader PP will ever be.
