I think Yunohost is great. It was easier for me to set up that trying to figure out Docker. I run a few sites including AdGuard Home as well as personal Pixelfed and Lemmy instances with it in a VM on an older Ubuntu box. That said, I’m stuck on Lemmy 0.18.2 without pict-rs because the update script to the latest version available on Yunohost (0.18.3 with pict-rs) is broken. Oh well!

Is this really still true about images federating in Lemmy? In any case, I think the problem can be avoided by disabling pict-rs.

Jellyfin and Yunohost are two projects that have simplified self-hosting and made it accessible for me. I just think more progress can be made in that direction.

and yet, here we are, on lemmy.

As far as I can tell, you are not self-hosting the Divisions by Zero Lemmy instance, so I’m not sure what your point is there. I am actually self-hosting my lemmy.crimedad.work instance with the help of Yunohost.

you also need to remember that this is literally a turn key product, that literally every cloud provider sells

I am unaware of server products that I can just buy, plug in, and get up and running in minutes with my own ActivityPub instances, media storage/streaming, XMPP messaging, and etc. If they really exist, please share links.

There’s certainly value in doing this stuff the hard way, but the goal should be for self-hosting to be as easy as signing up with Google, Facebook, Spotify, etc. There aren’t enough people with the time and curiosity to figure out the current state of self-hosting and make a dent in the three website problem.

Lol I know what you mean. Maybe I am speaking more to the ideal of the home network printer than real life. My experience with them over the last twelve years or so hasn’t been as terrible as yours, but it hasn’t been perfect either.

Hopefully that path is mostly precluded if an open source project like Yunohost is used as a basis.

If self-hosting is going to become commonplace, then it needs to be easier than setting up a network printer. People should be able to just buy a computer (maybe a laptop for integral screen and UPS) preloaded with something like Yunohost, but with a sleek GUI. It has to have good wizards that walk you through everything including setting up a domain and email.

Surprisingly good news, but the bar is very low when it comes to this topic.

There’s no indifference or malice in my words. Sorry if you feel that way.

Rapes may have occurred on that day as they do every other day of the year everywhere, and there has never been a fighting force that was completely innocent of it, but rape was not a part of the plan for Operation Al-Aqsa Flood. That allegation was a hoax designed to stoke the genocide against Palestinians, so it’s important to set that record straight.

That said, I don’t know how you can construe any of the Palestinian resistance as oppressors, except possibly to the extent that the PA has cooperated with the Israelis, but I digress. Violent, armed resistance to a colonial occupier is not oppression. It’s part of the struggle for liberation. No people ever got their freedom by asking nicely. At the very least they were able to leverage a credible threat of violence.

Well, it is a sided thing. One side is a colonial occupier employing genocidal means to maintain their dominance and on the other side are their victims, a practically stateless, displaced, and disenfranchised people with modest and fair demands to return home and have equal rights. It is the righteous, existential imperative of the latter to resist the former by any means necessary, including deadly terrorism. The case for Palestinian armed resistance and Operation Al-Aqsa Flood in particular is especially justified given Israel’s spectacular response to The Great March of Return in 2018 and 2019. The Israeli’s made it abundantly clear that non-violent resistance would only be answered with brutal punishment. Given what Palestinians are up against, I don’t think it’s really fair to expect any better from their armed resistance.

Hamas obviously isn’t perfect, but I try to be careful about criticizing any of the Palestinian resistance. As an American, it isn’t really my place.

I don’t really buy Ralph’s suggestion that it behooves Hamas to undercount the deaths. Rather, Palestinian authorities, including Hamas, probably feel like they have to be careful about their counts because credibility matters to their cause. The Israeli occupiers and their supporters will run with any perceived wolf crying.

Don’t miss the last four paragraphs of the article.

That seems like an oversight. ActivityPub should rely on some sort of certificate or cryptographic signature instead of a domain which might have to occasionally change.

I think what trips people up is that I explicitly include New Jersey for wolf reintroduction.

People think I’m joking when I say that we need to repopulate wolves and mountain lions in North America.

Yeah, but I don’t know if that really applies to XMPP. Google turned on XMPP federation for seven years and then turned it off. The article basically admits that it’s counterfactual to say that XMPP would have wider adoption or be more developed today if Google never did that.

I think a more significant concern would be if Meta hires away Fediverse developers, but that is separate from them just turning on federation.

The Fediverse is going to get a lot bigger once Meta turns on federation for Threads.

I run my own Pixelfed and Lemmy instances on not so young consumer grade hardware and it’s fine, but I am the only user. I would not want to have to deal with other users’ complaints, bad behavior, or other BS.

What a joke. I love how he uses the passive voice to describe IDF war crimes, but Hamas gets the active. They’re going to try and do regime change in Gaza, but Hamas is not the beginning or end of Palestinian armed resistance. What we really need is regime change in Israel.

As for Ukraine, I think that’s a lost cause and nothing Biden says convinces me otherwise. The enthusiasm for Israel just isn’t there for Ukraine in this piece.

Hmmm makes me question the benefit of the WTO.

Seems kind of complicated to me. Why don’t countries just unilaterally put tarriffs on imports from countries with (corporate) income taxes that are too low, as well as countries that don’t also have similar tariffs?

How was Israeli intelligence so bad that they could be taken off guard so incredibly in Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, yet suddenly so good that they would dare to conduct missile strikes in crowded areas like this? Really, it’s as bad as ever and they’re just serial killers who are happy to launch flying Saw traps at Palestinian civilians.

How does it handle stocks and other assets? Do you know iysf it’s possible to import from GnuCash into Firefly?

Transitioning from GnuCash
I have mostly enjoyed using GnuCash for desktop and GnuCash Android for years, but the Android version hasn't been updated in a while and I noticed that it isn't even available in the Google Play store anymore (or F-Droid, for that matter). There's a different GnuCash Android app available, but it's a different developer and it looks kind of bad. I'm concerned that if I get a new mobile device and/or upgrade the version of Android I'm running, I may lose access to the app, which would be a huge bummer. To avoid that, I would like to find a good GnuCash alternative ahead of time. Is anyone aware of a self-hosted solution for double entry accounting that will import GnuCash files and can handle non-currency assets as well as GnuCash for desktop does? So far, it seems like Fava and Beancounter might do the trick, but I'm not sure.

If there’s a way to get a Nest thermostat to my own server instead of Google’s, I’d love to hear it. I’ve had a good experience so far, but it would be nice to have a backup ready in case Google ever pulls the plug on the service.

You can absolutely run your own XMPP server. It came with my Yunohost installation.

Yes, I was going to attempt it this week, but hopefully I’m in the clear. With Yunohost the http challenge for renewal is done automatically, but apparently the DNS challenge is a manual process. It wouldn’t be the end of the world, but I just like having nice things.

From the TOS:

You may not knowingly or unknowingly exceed the bandwidth usage limitations that we may establish from time to time for the Services, or knowingly or unknowingly use the Services to host any type of server or commercial network or subnetwork.

Lol I guess not then! I would think that many customers violate this rule because many consumer products contain some type of server.

Port 80 inexplicably working again
On August 21, my Yunohost server, which I keep in my house, started warning we that port 80 was inaccessible from the Internet. None of my sites use port 80, so everything kept working, but I was concerned because I knew that my Let's Encrypt certificate would fail to automatically renew if I didn't fix the problem. Canyouseeme.org confirmed that the port was inaccessible. Today, with this evening's diagnostic report, my server's warning was gone and Canyouseeme.org confirms that the port is accessible again. I'm pleasantly surprised, but baffled. Has anyone else run into a similar problem? I am on a residential FiOS connection.

Hmmm… I do not have Pictrs because I am using the Yunohost Lemmy package, so there are no images on my instance, but I can still see images while logged into my instance.

On my flight home yesterday a free, but limited, wifi option was available that allowed only for messaging (WhatsApp, Messenger, and I think the Google and Apple ones were specifically mentioned), but not web browsing. I checked and, sure enough, I couldn't get web browsing to work, but WhatsApp and Messenger worked fine. I decided to try my XMPP client and I was pleasantly surprised to that that worked fine as well. I know it's a limited use case, where XMPP is one of the few unblocked protocols, but are there things I can do with it besides chatting? Could I use it to receive status updates from my server? Is there a way to use it for SSH somehow? I guess some sort of bot running on my server would be required. Seems like there are lots of possibilities, like bots that fetch websites or interact with ActivityPub. Has anyone found or tried anything like that? cross-posted from: https://pixelfed.crimedad.work/p/crimedad/598286716239948208 > Dog on a plane > > My wonderful neighbor, Juicy, on our flight home. > > [\#italiangreyhound](https://pixelfed.crimedad.work/discover/tags/italiangreyhound?src=hash) [#dog](https://pixelfed.crimedad.work/discover/tags/dog?src=hash) [#gooddog](https://pixelfed.crimedad.work/discover/tags/gooddog?src=hash) > > [@aww@lemmy.ml](https://pixelfed.crimedad.work/@aww@lemmy.ml)
