Soulseek. I’ll search a band I like, then browse the directories of other people with similar taste.

I’m pretty sure I tried the desktop app method at some point. Didn’t work at all for me but I can’t recall why.

Oh it’s an absolute slog for sure. And I can’t even guarantee it still works. I wouldn’t have even tried if I didn’t happen to chance upon a suitable device. Definitely wouldn’t recommend paying eBay prices for one just to do this.

I’ve done this successfully, but you need to jump thru quite a few hoops. These instructions are for Kindle only. I think dedrm can cope with Nook encryption but I don’t know how to do it. It was a while ago now, but to the best of my recollection:

  1. Get yourself an older model Kindle. I used a Kindle 3 that I found at Goodwill for $20. You may have to rejig your home WiFi if your model doesn’t support the right version of WPA.
  2. Register it to your Amazon account somehow. IIRC, you have to try and fail to do it from the device, then Amazon will email you instructions.
  3. Install Calibre and setup the dedrm plugin. It’s pretty well documented.
  4. Download what you want onto the Kindle. Pretty sure you have to use the Amazon website for this because of SSL issues on the older models.
  5. Setup your Kindle with Calibre. This is also pretty easy and and well documented.
  6. Grab the DRMed books off the Kindle into Calibre.
  7. Run the conversion process in Calibre to remove DRM and convert to (for example) epub.
  8. Optional: Jailbreak your Kindle and install KOReader to get a bit more value out of the obsolete brick you had to purchase to do this. This is a whole other set of hoops.

I’m not totally sure all this still works. You’re honestly probably better off getting a Boox device and downloading stuff from Anna’s Archive or similar.

Jailbreak + screensaver hack. It’s possible on most models there’s a jailbreak for. Master list is here: linky

Use of archive.org may be required, the link rot is a very real problem.

You’d probably also enjoy The Laundry Files. Math is magic, and while you -can- do it in your head, using computers is a lot safer and more efficient. Includes such gems as a basilisk gun integrated into CCTV camera systems.

Now I remember why I don’t pay attention to 7 news. This article is an ad in itself.

Fairly sure it’s in the cookies somewhere. When I used gamdl I exported them using this firefox addon … that was a while ago tho.

This is the one valid use of that “tip screen” what’s his name proposed the other day.

Downhill Domination will always get my vote. It’s also excellent in multiplayer.

First game of this style that i really enjoyed. The characters actually feel and play differently, the mechanics make sense and finding synergies is so much fun. My favourite is the silent but I’m not actually that good; haven’t finished the game yet but have gotten damn close a couple times.

Yeah I have started getting this recently. No idea why, I barely even use the site.

As much as I enjoy hating on Apple, their track record popularising niche technology is admittedly pretty good. They made mp3 players mainstream, then everyone else scrambled to catch up. They made smartphones mainstream, then everyone scrambled to catch up. I wouldn’t be surprised if they managed to pull off the same thing with VR/AR. Just don’t mention the Newton.

I just finished The Invincible. Runs like dogshit on my system (i5-9600 16Gb/RX6650XT 8Gb), but very engaging for a walking simulator. About ten hours long and very little replay value unless you’re a completionist. Recommended if that sounds like your cup of tea, but don’t pay full price.

Yeah I used to have one too, was fairly sure it closed down.

I like the way you think, but that’s kind of not true these days. We have streaming services and rights holders just straight deleting shit or producing shitty sequels and reboots just to keep the IP out of public domain. IDK about your location but here FTA is basically dead. It’s all shitty reality shows being hosted by third rate celebs from other reality shows because they either can’t or won’t produce or pay for actual content.

Probably a bit hard to justify the price for this purpose, but there are a few really high end dedicated music players out there that run Android. I know Sony make one, and I believe some of the Fiio players run Android too.

Recording from free to air is legal because of the “time shifting” argument. The show is being broadcast regardless, just because it’s at an inconvenient time for you doesn’t mean you should have to miss it. It’s also worth noting that media producers fought tooth and nail against this.

I’m running mine on Pi4. It works, but I wouldn’t really recommend it. It needs frequent reboots and tends to choke on anything over 1080.

This confused the living shit out of me for a good five minutes, seeing a sidey on the MFD but a battlestar in the main screen and an X4 HUD.

Plot twist: the “quick, decisive action” will be to tell them to shut the fuck up or get fired.

In Australia we have the EFA. Inspired by but not related to the EFF. If you want to get involved locally there might be something similar in your country.

Australia sort of has a system like this. You have to have the money to campaign up front, but you can claim back a percentage based on how much of the vote you get. In practice it just means we end up with a ton of minor and single issue parties doing preference deals and trading favours in the senate.

So far. I only have 3TB in my NAS (RAID5) at the moment. I’ll see if the money I save on streaming services will pay for another array by the time I run out of storage.
