My colleagues having a chat about their favourite tv shows in the operations channel at 7am have entered the chat.

“Winning” is like making it to max level in a mmorpg. It’s not the end but it is the beginning of the endgame.

If you’re making a mil a year in revenue there’s a good chance your profit margin is tiny and licensing fees could obliterate it.

I am not sure how Manifest V3 is relevant here?

Because they literally tout security as one of the primary reasons for forcing it onto people.

https://developer.chrome.com/docs/extensions/mv3/intro/

The first line is “A step in the direction of security, privacy, and performance.”

https://developer.chrome.com/blog/mv2-transition/

“Manifest V3 is more secure, performant, and privacy-preserving than its predecessor.”

It’s the first thing they say.

If it doesn’t prevent a malicious extension from lifting your password in perhaps the most dumb and naive way I can think of, then it seems fairly disingenuous to describe it as “secure”.

Holy shit that’s too real. I come here to get away from work!

Ok so it’s my fault that now someone at Intel knows how much porn I look at because I clicked “next” on a beta driver?

They collect:

The categories of websites you visit, but not the URL itself

The information collected includes categorized web browsing history that shows how long and how often you visited specific categories of sites (i.e. social media, personal finance, or news). All site visits are classified into one of 30 categories. We do not collect URLs, web pages titles, or user-specific content without explicit permission from you.

Software usage: for example, frequency and duration of application usage such as Intel® Driver & Support Assistant, but not the application content itself such as specific actions or keyboard input.

Feature usage: for example, how much RAM you usually use or your laptop’s average battery life.

Other devices in your computing environment

Includes universal plug and play devices and devices that broadcast information to your computer on a local area network: for example, smart TV model and vendor information, and video streaming devices.

(the emphasis is mine, as is the minor reordering to not hide the browsing behaviour stuff at the bottom)

Yeah that’ll be a no from me there, bud.

I know. I don’t disagree. I’m just tired of everything being desperate to collect invasive amounts of information about me.

Because they invariably record way more data than they need to.

How bout just don’t install privacy-invading data collection services alongside a fucking device driver at all.

I mean. Sorta.

When you use some service you have some expectation that they’ll treat you fairly and predictably. Sure their Eula let’s them do whatever the fuck they want legally but that doesn’t change the fact that if they opt take certain actions (like arbitrary taking people’s usernames) then they risk losing user trust.

If the admin just took your username one day would you just quietly accept it? What if they edited or deleted your comments? Would you just shrug and say “well it’s their site they can do what they want” and just walk away?

Look what happened when Spez got caught editing posts on Reddit, for example. Massive user outcry.

Dude’s allowed to be annoyed about it.

It depends on the movie and how they market it. Usually once it hits streaming services good rips will be available very quickly.

Personally I don’t bother with CAMs or TSs, I’d rather wait until there’s a good rip.

Use Radarr, set the quality you want, watch stuff when it shows up.

Pi with Kodi on it is pretty good.

I’m looking at Ubiquiti’s UniFi doorbell. It’s not cheap, nor really intended for home installation (it’s more like office grade stuff), but I already use their networking kit and run their software.

                                 has entered the chat.

I’m in the same kinda situation as you, I need some storage but need it to be expandable, want to run some docker stuff, while I could (and have in the past) build and maintain something like that from scratch, I don’t want it to take over my life and I want it to be easy to maintain. My previous NAS was fully set up from scratch on FreeBSD, it was pretty good but was a lot of work to get it right.

So I set up an Unraid server on a parts-bin server as a kinda compromise between a fully DIY and just buying a NAS. Meant I could use some old stuff I had and some cheap components rather than paying out hundreds for a NAS. Slapped in some shucked drives and some old NVMe drives (took the opportunity to upgrade my gaming machine, so used the old stuff for this), now got 42Tb of storage and 2Tb cache.

I have to say it’s bloody fantastic. Was a bit on the fence about a paid OS but it’s cheap, the UI is solid, and thus far totally worth the money.

Alongside about a dozen services running in containers, I’ve got an Arch VM to satiate my DIY cravings, which suits me fine because I can do what I want with that without messing up my file storage/services/etc.

msconfig has a maximum memory option. Worth checking that to make sure it’s not set to 8gb.

Could also be that you’ve installed the sticks in a weird configuration. Often if you have 4 slots the board actually wants you to populate slots 2 and 4 if you’re only using 2 sticks. Details are usually printed on the board.

Or could be reserve for the iGPU, have a look in the bios.

Block accounts can get expensive if you’re doing a lot of traffic.

The setup I recommend is one unlimited account and a block account on a different backbone. That way you can download as much as you like and the block account gives you extra coverage.

Why do they insist on dicking around with the taskbar?

Google must be fucking salivating at the prospect of manifest v3 going live and adblockers being gimped.

I wish more people would switch to Firefox.

we’re seen as evil because we’re helping DRM exist and we’re ensuring people make money out of games

No, you’re seen as evil because your software is an inefficient and invasive security risk that makes games significantly worse, and compromises/punishes your paying customers in the quest for more money.

I no longer pirate games (thanks to Steam), but I’ll never buy one with Denuvo.

Fuck allllll the way off.

Honestly by completely ignoring the subject of federation, aside from acknowledging that mastodon’s creators/owners/etc have limited scope to turn evil, they’ve actually done a fairly reasonable job with this one.

I just went on a hunt through all the versions I could find and the audio’s not great on any of them. I’m waiting on that one.

Piracy is not immoral, but if it’s too widespread it can destroy opportunities for people creating things to get paid for creating things, and so they may not be able to continue doing so. And that just makes the world worse.

Try to find a way to support the people that make stuff that you love. For example I won’t pirate music from small bands, I only pirate games if they have onerous DRM or something (never indie games), and I’ll only pirate books if they’re ridiculously overpriced and I can’t get a standalone DRM free version.

Just cos you’re a pirate doesn’t mean you can’t have morals.

Awesome thank you, definitely a few there that I could make use of!

Basically you want one primary usenet service, doesn’t really matter what (they all have pros and cons but for a normal users they’re basically the same), and another secondary service on a separate backbone (see https://whatsmyuse.net) to get good coverage without being hurt too hard by takedowns.

It’s kinda not cool in the usenet world to recommend specific services because there’s so much shilling going on. I’ll tell you what I use but please don’t take it as a specific recommendation. No affiliation with any of these.

For indexers I use nzb.su and drunkenslug. The former seems to have better coverage but the latter is faster. I hear nzbfinder is good too.

I use frugalusenet but only cos I got a deal that makes it $34/year. It comes with a free secondary block account on a second backbone so it’s kinda helpful in that way. But overall coverage isn’t as good as two well chosen providers. They often post good deals to Reddit/etc so keep your eyes open for a good one (Black Friday is a good time)

I honestly can’t believe he’s being so egotistical about it. Insults mods as “landed gentry” and users’ concerns as “noise” - those are literally the people that have created this “valuable dataset” he’s coveting so greedily.

The only real problem with Reddit is Reddit Inc.

You’re right, Lemmy/etc represent a great opportunity for the users and mods to regain control over the communities they build.

Thanks I’ve been trying to fill in those claims with links so this one is great :)

This appears at the top of the page until you dismiss it (at least for me): https://i.imgur.com/Uo3t2TI.jpg

Here’s what it links to: https://mods.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/16693988535309

Yesterday they were linking to some much more blatant propaganda/history whitewash, here’s the link: https://www.redditinc.com/blog/apifacts

If it wasn’t hurting them they wouldn’t be doing damage control.

It’s working, keep it up.

The only problem with using paths is the service might not support it (ie it might generate absolute URLs without the path in, rather than using relative URLs).

Subdomains is probably the cleanest way to go.
