  1. Ok (um, then they do it why?) My attention has been really divided for the past couple days, so I haven’t really read very deeply into PPA.

  2. Didn’t know that; maybe they should reconfigure themselves to be more like Wikipedia? 🤷 It seems like Wikipedia has way more users than FF, and they’re able to keep going on the small donations they request from time to time.

  3. Indeed it does! And it might be nice if it wasn’t checked by default like it was in mine, but ok, I guess.

Also, what have hamsters ever done to you? 😉

Does anyone know if the PPA/Personal Pan Pizza Privacy/Whatever thing has an about:config entry or is it controlled from about:preferences#privacy?

EDIT: To answer my own question, the about:config entry is “dom.private-attribution.submission.enabled” which should be set to “false”; for those of us who use arkenfox, you should add this to your user-overrides.js file and then run the updater:

user_pref(“dom.private-attribution.submission.enabled”, false); // Disable Privacy-Preserving Attribution

This is correct AFAICT.

EDIT EDIT: Also, possibly naive question: Why can’t Mozilla/Firefox just ask for donations like Wikipedia does instead of sneaking around, which they sort of seem to do once in a while?

I honestly don't know what to think at this point; just putting this out there.

I have fond memories of playing these, but dear god was Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy frustrating! There was another Infocom game, Trinity I think it was, where you needed to get some water or something like that, but you couldn’t put it in an empty boot, you had to have the bucket for it to work. Kind of like playing “guess the mind of the programmer.” Fun times, even so. And then there was Leather Goddesses of Phobos . . . 😊.

Hi ulkesh, looks like you might be responding to a comment I deleted because I felt like I was bragging and being too preachy. Anyway, do you use any other flavors of Linux besides Garuda (I had to look it up, I hadn’t heard of it!)? How do you like it? And your DE environment of choice is, I guess, KDE?

As far as InDesign alternatives go, do people know about VivaDesigner or even LaTeX for that matter?

Time to switch to Linux 😁👍 (there are plenty of Adobe alternatives for it, although they don’t necessarily offer 100% replacements). I’m convinced that Adobe is one of the major reasons that people stick with windows. If worse comes to worse you can run windows on Linux using a virtual machine (and believe you me, if I can do it then you can too).

Archive.is link needed please.

Thanks! Will give it a try (but may have more questions as I try to set it up).

While we’re on the topic of search engines, does anyone know how to install your own private Whoogle instance? I’ve been a little confused by the instructions I’ve found; do I need my own server to set this up?

Seems like most search engines these days are primarily Google-based or Bing-based. Mojeek has its own crawler, I think…

Was wondering what the hell was going on this morning.

I have the option to see hidden files using Material Files (won’t let you look inside Android folder tho); if you need something more heavy duty there’s Ghost Commander. Both are available on F-Droid. There’s also Files from GrapheneOS, which might be available on the Play Store, but not sure about that one.

From Wikipedia: The Ludwig von Mises Institute for Austrian Economics, or Mises Institute, is a nonprofit think tank headquartered in Auburn, Alabama, that is a center for Austrian economics, radical right-wing libertarian thought and the paleolibertarian and anarcho-capitalist movements in the United States. It is named after the economist Ludwig von Mises (1881–1973) and promotes his version of heterodox Misesian Austrian economics.

I keep trying to post this to World News on BH but it then it ends up on lemmy.ml instead!

Well, they spoke with the EFF which made Privacy Badger, so maybe that’s why. They did the password thing with the dice, tho, which I guess is good.

✔HTTPS 👍

✔VPNs 👍

I thought DNS over HTTPS (DoH!) was not recommended for some reason . . . My VPN provider claims to be using its own DNS servers.

I was under the impression that [Privacy Badger wasn't considered useful any more](https://github.com/arkenfox/user.js/wiki/4.1-Extensions#-dont-bother) . . . ? They should've just recommended using Firefox instead, yes? EDIT: They spoke to, but IMHO, did not give enough time to, Cory Doctorow and Brewster Kahle. They mentioned Mastodon 👍, and *described* the Fediverse while not actually calling it that! A bit frustrating.

Before answering your first question (I’m actually not sure how to answer! I’ll have to think about it 🤔)–my laptop has wifi, which transmits and receives radio waves to/from my router; my router is connected to a cable (broadband cable? I guess? Not DSL at any rate), which is connected to the internet (and there’s also a MODEM in there somewhere too). My laptop doesn’t have the ability to connect by mobile data which uses, I guess?, cell phone towers, but my smartphone can use both. So they’re two different systems is I guess what I’m getting at, and I was never clear on how or if a VPN provided any sort of basic privacy if it was only using cell towers. This is a potentially really dumb question (the head injury doesn’t help 🤕), but remember, William Gibson used to think that computers were powered by these gleaming magical crystals (or so he claims), before he looked inside one and discovered that it was basically just a floppy plastic record spinning around really fast.

Does a VPN used on a smartphone with Wi-Fi disabled (mobile data only enabled) provide any sort of protection?
I've never completely understood this, but I think the answer would probably be "no," although I'm not sure. Usually when I leave the house I turn off wifi and just use mobile data (this is a habit from my pre-VPN days), although I guess I should probably just keep it on since using strange Wi-Fi with a VPN is ok (unless someone at Starbucks is using the evil twin router trick . . . ?). I was generally under the impression that mobile data is harder to interfere with than Wi-Fi, but I could well be wrong and my notions out of date. So, if need be, please set me straight. 🙂

Because far too many US Dems are cowards who live in fear of the conservative news media who will claim, no matter what they do, that they are “soft on crime.”

Can Biden win without the youth vote? Does he even want to win?

Hey, hey, genocide Joe, how many Palestinians left to go?

I’m not very good at this 🙁

We did this by voting “no preference” in the primaries.👍

I would recommend instead to specifically voice your concerns to Biden or to your congresspeople. It won’t do all that much, but it will do infinitely more than just silently voting and nothing else.

Done and done 👍. The next bit is a bit trickier tho …

I can get away with it because I’m fortunate enough to live in a very blue state; if Biden can’t win my home state, then he’s got bigger problems than the hedgemeister not voting for him. I’m all ears if you have a better suggestion.

Didn’t read yet (but will) . . . “may” be violating international law?! Bold statement indeed.

EDIT: Biden has basically forced me to not vote for him over this; I’ll be leaving the box blank next to his name.

EDIT EDIT: This does not mean I’ll be voting for Trump!

Does enshitification happen because companies are publicly-traded?
Isn't that a prerequisite for enshitification? Publicly-traded companies are required (by law, I think) to maximize profits for their shareholders, even if that means utterly ruining their original product (Reddit, Boeing, etc.), yes? What do you think?

Yes, lack of housing is a serious problem that needs to be fixed. I would have supported the January 6th insurrectionists if they were demanding housing and an end to corporate bribery instead of trying to extend the reign of the fascist orange turd 🍄

The 21st century hasn’t been terribly nice so far. We had the 2000 US presidential election fiasco, 9/11, Afghanistan and Iraq, hurricane Katrina with the Federal govt essentially telling the people of Louisiana to go and fuck themselves; let’s see, then there’s the 2008 finanicial crisis, the 2016 election of Trump (and I’m not so thrilled with Obama’s presidency in retrospect, tho he did give us Obamacare, for what it’s worth), then the Jan 6th insurrection, the pandemic, and just as it seemed like that might be winding down, Russia invaded Ukraine, and when that seemed like it entered into a stalemate, then Hamas attacked Israel and Israel responded with collective punishment of Gaza. I’m sure I’m forgetting lots of other important stuff (there are ongoing wars in the Congo we never hear about), but those are the things that stick out to me. Humanity is exhausted and demoralized; birthrates in many places around the world are taking a nosedive. I’m fortunate to only have been personally affected by the finanicial crisis and COVID, lots of other people have had it much worse. Someone will probably respond that it’s all a matter of perspective, and they’d be right, of course; perhaps I was spoiled by the relatively stress-free 90s. Maybe things will get better? I think it’s past time they did. Anyway, thus endeth my rant, thanks for reading.

Hello, I’m using the AppImage on Linux Mint. The web and android clients don’t seem to have connectivity issues; only the desktop client. I was told to log out, delete my saved account on the desktop client and then log in again. This did not work. Then I was told to disable IPv6 which I think I did, though I’m not sure, and that didn’t help either. Turning off Mullvad VPN also didn’t seem to work. I’ve also reinstalled the desktop client several times, no dice. Looking over on reddit it looks like I’m not the only Tuta user who’s been having connectivity issues. All of the stuff I mentioned trying may or may not be correct as to what I actually did; at this point I honestly can’t remember for certain. What I am certain about is being on the verge of a nervous breakdown over all this; I’ve lost several days of work and I really need to have a syncing calendar that works. Yes, I can still use it on the web, but I really prefer to use a separate client. Is this the only cause of all my stress? No, I’ve been having a bad couple of days for several reasons, but this ongoing problem certainly doesn’t help.

I do seriously respect your opinion, and if you say “No” then “No” it shall be.
