Glad I could help!

Edit: I see now that you had already ordered. I was glad to be part of this journey nonetheless.

The skybox in E1 is from China FYI! E2 is from Zion National park. So if you really want to, you can explore them :)

A thread on DW with sources.

That was my impression as well. But since I’m on a low-RAM VPS any overhead in RAM adds up, and I wanted to know how process deduplication works before I get into it.

Yes this is what I want to do. My question is how docker manages shared processes between these apps (for example, if app1 uses mysql and app2 also uses mysql).

Does it take up the RAM of 2 mysql processes? It seems wasteful if that’s the case, especially since I’m on a low-RAM VPS. I’m getting conflicting answers, so it looks like I’ll have to try it out and see.

Aren’t containers the product of compose files? i.e. the compose files spin up containers. I understand the architecture, I’m just not sure about how docker streamlines separate containers running the same process (eg, mysql).

I’m getting some answers saying that it deduplicates, and others saying that it doesn’t. It looks more likely that it’s the former though.

I’m getting conflicting replies, so I’ll try running separate containers (which was the point of going the docker way anyway - to avoid version dependency problems).

If it doesn’t scale well I may just switch back to non-container hosting.

Thank you for an excellent explanation and blogpost. I’m getting conflicting answers, even on this question, but most authoritative sources do backup what you’re saying re:FS. I’m trying to wrap my head around how that works, specifically with heavy processes. I’m running on a VPS with 2 GiB of RAM and mysql is using 15% of that.

At this point I have my primary container running. I guess I’ll just have to try spinning up new ones and see how things scale.

What if your services need different database versions, or even software? Then different database containers is probably better.

This version-independence was what attracted me to docker in the first place, so if it doesn’t work well this way then I may just replace the setup with a conventional setup and deal with dependency hell like I used to - pantsseat.gif.

Thank you. Yes makes sense. I guess it’s fairly obvious in hindsight.

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m doing now, I was only unsure about how to map the remaining services - in the same docker containers, or in new ones.

That would be ideal, per my understanding of the architecture.

So will docker then minimize the system footprint for me? If I run two mysql containers, it won’t necessarily take twice the resources of a single mysql container? I’m seeing that the existing mysql process in top is using 15% of my VPS’s RAM, I don’t want to spin up another one if it’s going to scale linearly.

Adding services to an existing Docker nginx container
Hi, I'm just getting started with Docker, so apologies in advance if this seems silly. I used to self-host multiple services (RSS reader, invoicing software, personal wiki) directly on a VPS using nginx and mariadb. I messed it up recently and am starting again, but this time I took the docker route. So I've set up the invoicing software ([InvoiceNinja](https://hub.docker.com/r/invoiceninja/invoiceninja/)), and everything is working as I want. Now that I want to add the other services (ttrss and dokuwiki), should I set up new containers? It feels wasteful. Instead, if I add additional configs to the existing servers that the InvoiceNinja docker-compose generated (nginx and mysql), I'm worried that an update to Invoiceninja would have a chance of messing up the other setups as well. It shouldn't, from my understanding of how docker containers work, but I'm not 100% sure. What would be the best way to proceed?

Are you seriously suggesting that a game meant to run on Windows 98 runs better on wine than it does on Windows 98?

$5 to this person OP.

Linux isn’t going to help, and why the hell would you want to buy or pirate (and run the risk of malware) something you already own.

If your device is on this list and you’re technically-inclined, consider installing lineageOS.

Your original discussion with @lemillionsocks@beehaw.org, was about power usage while gaming, and the corresponding worst-case battery life. I was referring to this as efficiency.

I understand now that the term was misleading The M1 is 25% more frugal than the M2 under worst-case load.

You are absolutely right about efficiency. Even the (less efficient) M2 is way better than the 6800U for example under single-threaded load. It’s ~5W vs ~15W, around 3 times as power hungry as the M2, while performing slightly worse.

The M1 is around 25% more efficient than the M2.

India doesn’t have dual-citizenship; you give up Indian citizenship when you get your Canadian passport.

Thank you. My partner is afraid around dogs and cats, and news like this makes me feel bad for her.

I had the same dilemma about emotional support animals.

Good points to note, thank you! I would have taken the balancing circuit for granted, but it doesn’t hurt to double-check with vendors.

I didn’t know that deep-discharge batteries also had the same characteristics, TIL, and it makes sense based on my experience with them!

Thanks for your insight. You seem to have some experience.

I’m currently researching a solar hybrid power system in India and am going through different battery types. We have used deep-cycle lead-acid batteries with a regular UPS and I’m familiar with their lifesoan.

Do lifepo4s last longer? I’m only seeing marginally longer lifespans. I’m also concerned about safety. I’m quite scared of regular lithiums and have read that lifepo4s are more hardy.

What about maintenance? Anything else I need to know about them?

Forgive me if I’m wrong, but auto batteries aren’t meant for deep discharge. UPS’s use a specific type of battery that is meant for it.

Using auto batteries in this situation would likely end up in them dying after a few months.

Namecheap is cheap and has low cost (free?) Privacyguard. Nearlyfreespeech.net is a principles-first web hosting company that is committed to free speech and also offers domain hosting and registration.

So did my Asus motherboard. It didn’t install armoury crate, but it pop up as a suggestion. Maybe op just clicked through absent-mindedly?

As a digital nomad, I’m guessing you would have been to relatively low CoL places like Bali, Thailand, maybe Eastern Europe or LatAm. You have to remember that your experience as someone from the global north, earning in a strong currency is very different from a local person there.

Not that i disagree with you that rankings are flawed but by the same token, Canada /is/ in the top 5 for many people from low standard-of-living countries

If you like Unravel 2 you’ll love ITT. Similar vibe. Some other recommendations that I played through with my partner:

  • Brothers: a tale of two sons
  • A way out
  • Trine, Trine 2, Trine 3?, T4? Only played the first 2 in co-op
  • Guacamelee, G2 (only played 2 in co-op, 1 was in solo)

I preloaded it via the Xbox app.

Install fail2ban. Prevents brute force access to your server. The defaults should be fine.

I’m playing co-op, so I have one PC and manage one companion, and the other player does the same.

Fair. I was playing a warrior so combat wasn’t as much an issue for me. Tbh when we were starting, someone told us to play DOS 2 instead of 1 since it’s a better gameplay experience and I wonder if all these rough edges have been fixed.

Tell me more about what you disliked about D:OS. I’m playing through in co-op (in the endgame right now) and want to commiserate.

For me it was the bugs and some weird choices where things that should work to progress don’t, and some progress is so convoluted that we had to look it up and we were like ugh wth.

Looking up stuff is annoying when something you’re sure should work logically doesn’t.

Since you haven’t mentioned Ion Fury, I’m going to add it to that list. Not interesting for PC since they wanted PvP but it’s a great Build engine shooter.

Helps, thanks! I think I’ll stick to wg just from a purist POV. Also I can afford some downtime for my use case

I saw that tailscale uses wireguard. Is there any advantage to using tailscale to deploy it over setting it up myself?
