And if you look closer at the verbiage and the way they are known to operate, you are highly likely to be “on the clock” for 50 but only paid for 40. Then deduct standard taxes from that and you end up with way less than if you had been smart about things and they paid fairly per mile, etc.
Considering how clueless the lawmakers are here in the states about this stuff (despite best of intentions), I wouldn’t expect this arrangement to be any better than being free to cherry pick the best offers, best times to work, etc. The beauty of being IC is being able to say fuck that, not doing that one. What I fear about this is that the gig workers will have to accept bullshit offers to keep their metrics in the right zone so they don’t get “fired”.
It’s a start but even if you are guaranteed that amount per hour worked you can still end up making way less after operating expenses unless they are also pushing the companies to reimburse for mileage on top of a min hourly. I drive for a living, uber, etc and I run my own service. When you are self employed in most industries, hourly is actually counter productive to profitability and success.
I would absolutely NOT work this kind of job for as little as $20/hour even if that included mileage reimbursement. If you track your earnings hourly then most days you will have an hour or two where you make like $10/hour or less and then it goes nuts and you clear $100 or more in an hour or two or less sometimes. One of the benefits of being self employed is the various tax benefits depending on the country you live/work in. I’m in the USA where I can deduct 64.5c/mile iirc but if I was getting reimbursed I may not be able to take that deduction which would mean I earn less after taxes. Not to mention the control these companies have over drivers when they are considered employees versus independent.
As I said in another comment. At one point in time I’m fairly certain that they were round filing any dmca notices but that could have changed. I know for a fact that spectrum forwards them (because I’ve gotten a few over the past few years). I now pay for a seedbox and I use resilio sync to make moving them to my nas mostly hands off.
Iirc, at one point I believe they were round filing any dmca requests. What I would suggest is use Proton or another vpn that has settings for this type of traffic. I don’t remember seeing anything about them throttling non pirated files transferred over those protocols but I haven’t paid attention to them in years because I moved away from the area they were rolling out.
This is the way. It’s just me who watches stuff off my nas and I’m fine with vlc so I don’t use plex or jellyfin or whatever. I have an old (at this point) qnap nas that I’ve been doing the same with. Mine is a total of 40tb’ish iirc. I definitely need to get a second nas and some more drives but for now what I have is enough though I am going to run out of space soonish.
Shit dude, give me access to most things I want to watch and most of the stuff I’ve forgotten about and that’s worth $50/month as a minimum.
I’ve come full circle back to wearing an eye patch. I was using amazon, hulu, hbo and paramount, usually letting some lapse or pause to watch stuff on the other ones but they have all gone to shit. It’s impossible to find what you might be interested because just like netflix they show the same shows/movies in multiple categories and their search sucks ass plus they are all missing a ton of good shows.
Now I am slowly downloading shows from the past that I don’t already have in my library and haven’t watched in years while I keep an eye out for new shows I might be interested in. I use showrss to auto download current shows that it has in its DB to a vps and I have sync setup to mirror it to my nas so I can stream it to my TV with vlc. So much easier than opening hulu, finding the show I want to catch up on, etc.
I would stick with namecheap (for now) and pony up for a multi year registration. If in 5 or 10 years they are jacking the price up then you can use another registrars cheap port option to get a discount. I did this recently between godaddy and namecheap. I had one domain left with godaddy that I have owned for over probably a couple of decades at this point and they were seriously jacking the rate up on me, I ported it to namecheap for a massive discount.
Some people prefer the thumbnail look of plex, netflix, hulu, etc. I prefer to just scroll down to the folder of my unwatched stuff or the entire season or entire run of a show and watch it that way. Plus because it’s vlc pulling via smb from my local nas, it’s faster to stream and doesn’t need to be encoded to be played. There virtually nothing that vlc can’t play.
As for the shield. There is supposedly a new one coming at some point, I’ll probably wait until then to grab one. They are in the $200 range so no need to be quick on the draw grabbing what is aging a bit hardware wise.
I have it auto downloading through a rss feed from showrss.info. I don’t use plex or jellyfin or the like. At one point I was running a media server on my pc but now my android TV with vlc is pulling straight from my nas. For now I am paying for a torrent friendly vps so I don’t have to worry about whether or not I leak my ip address.
What fight? I’ve returned to the high seas and have zero issues and am definitely not fighting anyone over it. I do pay for a vps designed for torrents so I don’t risk losing my home internet and not have to worry about making sure my vpn has no leaks.
Learn to pick your battles and you will be less stressed about everything.
I’m not assuming anything. I’m going on the presumption that they will do what they will do and that politicians are going to be similar regardless of country or tax laws, etc.
It’s also clear that as I said, you have no idea how these companies operate. They will find a way to fuck the workers over as much as possible.
As I said and you clearly missed. I’m a so called gig worker except I’m making an actual job out of it. I refuse to do the food deliveries because I can’t see how they make any money after the time and mileage invested. I drive uber, empower and I am building my own service. I’ve also been self employed most of my working life and I know how these companies operate.
If you can prove that Canada is somehow impervious to what they have done everywhere since these companies have existed, I’ll move asap. For example, if I’m not mistaken, California has similar laws on the books and I am fairly certain that uber and lyft include tips in the hourly min. They will probably do similar up your way unless your law makers are some how much smarter and tougher than ours and thought through the possible ways they could work this law.
The above said. I’m done here. I’m tired of talking chess while you assume we were going to play chutes and ladders.
