Thx. I’m dabbling rn with a 2015 Intel i5 SFF and a low profile 6400 GPU, but it looks like I’ll be getting back to all my gear soon, and was curious to see what others are having success running with.
I think I’m looking at upgrading to a 7600 or greater GPU in a ryzen 7, but still on the sidelines watching the ryzen 9k rollout.
I still haven’t tried any image generation, have only used llamafile and LM studio, but would like to did a little deeper, while accounting for my dreaded ADHD that makes it miserable to learn new skills…

I don’t self host presently, but if I get my server hardware back (moved out of the country a while) I want to dabble with a self hosted photo solution, so I’m glad to have found your post that keeps this fresh in my mind.
They also don’t always keep the metadata in the same archive (zip or tar) with the pictures they belong with, and that can throw off imports with tools that process Google Takeout archives directly. Its a pretty nasty solution, for real.
I moved about 140GB to ente.io before they had their newer takeout process, but some destinations can enable third party apps (like rclone) to do cloud to cloud. Nor sure which work best, since I couldn’t go that route myself.
EoL? They’re releasing betas regularly and announced 13.3 for Q2. You mean how they’re sort of winding down with scale taking the bulk of dev cycles? Not much to change with the platform, and security fixes will be backported to CORE. I think SCALE still doesn’t fit my use-case, hut when it does, and jails go away with CORE, I’ll shed a tear and pour one out for my homie.
In that case, I’d probably be thinking of a standard power supply with molex output (they make bricks like this) for a 5.25" fan controller that ties in thermistors on the control side of the equation. I know that’s not the typical, “I just use a raspberry pi and…” answer we’re used to here, so take mine with a grain of salt.
If you mean running the fans in 240vAC, Comair Rotron make fantastic fans for this voltage. If you mean a regulator circuit and any old 12vDC fan, sorry for misunderstanding.

OP, WD Red NAS drives are usually 5400 with low cache and go at least up to 10TB. Might have to buy soon, as I don’t see much new stock.
Well as long as you’re aware of the risk and prepared for it, its not so bad to run in a volatile way like that. I ran my TN box for almost a decade on the same USB boot before I finally caved and picked up three Intel enterprise SSD for the job, with one as a cold spare. Nothing in the vox was critical or would be missed for more than a few beers of crying.
Thats is a very budget-friendly choice for UnRAID to accept varying drive sizes. As a backup destination, especially a cold backup, the RAM requirements of ZFS should be less impactful. I had lots of use from my TrueNAS box with 16GB, and my dedicated cold backup build is just 8GB on 5x1TB WD Blue (gasp!) HDDs. I always wanted to try other NAS platforms, but I’m away from all my tech for a few years.
Yes! I imported 23k media files into a new platform, and the takeout process was such a pain. My destination was built to handle the zipped or unzipped media, but occasionally issues cropped up,like when files spanned archives but the json was on the previous one. That resulted in orphaned files with upload dates instead of date taken.
Ultimately, I think I had the best experience extracting all 123GB and uploading the albums/folders that way.
Would have been SO much easier with an API that allowed cloud to cloud.
This comment seems to imply that at least some titles won’t function after the delisting, perhaps related to servers, perhaps not.
Which version, pro or tube? My 2015 pro is a champ, including in Kodi. Adding the Samsung SSD a few years back was a game changer though. Boot time dropped to 7 seconds, and no trouble with h.265 and even 1080 AV1.
Edit: To OP, I currently host my files on the shield local drive and watch with Kodi. I used to have a NAS, but am living leaner lately, and local works fine. Can easily move files to it over the network
When I was in college, one of my instructors used these “clickers” that cost students $40 per semester to rent. They used radio to allow submitting realtime quiz answers during class.

Faculty at the two higher eds I worked as staff at hated the cost of books and student materials too, and tried their best to keep them down. Most of them. Publishers like Pearson and Cengage started doing things like discounting teacher’s editions and/or including curriculum (slide decks, all level of evaluatons and more) in exchange for becoming the learning portal and getting their hands on that sweet, sweet PII and marketable data, not to mention the yearly rolling editions of their student texts with single-use portal key codes.
This free market correction sure is taking its time…
The KIA app has three trackers in it. (Can’t scan the latest version, however) Not exactly a lot by contemporary standards, but more than many. Two of my banking apps have 7. One weather app has 10. The apps I respect have none or only a single tracker, and only for crashlytics, and still optional.
I recently adopted ente, and while the devs are active and enthusiastic, feature parity with gphotos is a long way off. IMO, the sub price should be half what it is.
The desktop app (the only practical/supported way to import your Google Takeout) has lots of little bugs and problems, not least of which is 100% CPU load for the the first few weeks you have it installed. Thats because (even after initial encryption and upload is complete) the machine learning and indexing (even the basic, opted out version) hobbles your system with aggressive CPU scheduling.
I’m going to stick it out for a second month, but I’m not without regrets. For me, I was just done feeding Google AI with my photos and wanted privacy first.
Kodi has made my setup dead-simple: File server running on TrueNAS serving my library over SMB/CIFS and Kodi does all the “management” on the client side (which really is just my watch progress and metadata), so my server is just a dumb box of disks in RaidZ1. I have only one client, and as for configuration, I just created two media objects in Kodi: TV and Movies, and the rest is default other than the unrelated IGAL setup.
I like what I read about the arr’s and Jellyfin, but until my current setup feels cumbersome or insufficient, I’m sticking with it.
Adding my obligatory “why Plex over Kodi?” comment.
Kodi only needs file access, and handles video files more gracefully, even if you keep the filenames as downloaded. Includes sub search addons, all the same meta features that Plex does (watch history, resume from where you left off, ratings, cast and crew, trivia, trailers), and is free and open. Plus, no forced upgrades of server or client app or phone home.
But either way, have fun building out your storage!

I’m for publishers and other representatives of the old system pulling away from the digital world close to entirely. Their whole business model requires scarcity that used to exist when creators were on the other side of the world and fans were lucky to have them come within 200 miles for a chance to enjoy them, and in the meantime, want to buy a record to experience them at home.
Now, creators can be in our hands, on our desks, and easily in our living rooms. The middlemen that brought those scarce physical objects to us (records, tapes, vhs and audio, books, etc) aren’t needed anymore, because the distribution of the art or idea is instant and on demand and already paid for by the communications package we all subscribe to.
Fans can connect directly with creators, who no longer need millions of fans to give them a huge slice of overall music (or other creative work) revenue. Just a few hundred devoted fans is enough to live comfortably, instead of being a superstar.
I’m dreaming, though…
ETA: the publishers could rethink their role and evolve to help creatives reach their audience, but, currently, they impede that. Creatives do better (per fan) when they know their fans and can connect directly with them.
The music industry welcomed the development, stating that a service that helps infringers evade prosecution through anonymization also acts illegally.
But a service that artificially inflates revenues with shady accounting of song plays while simultaneously withholding payments toward creators, that’s totally not criminal.

Kodi on my 2015 Nvidia Shield doesn’t stutter for me playing back 30GB+ 4k files on a 1Gb network from an ancient (2012) AMD Athlon TrueNAS box. It could be network related, but you can test this from another machine (laptop, desktop, etc) or by using local playback on the pi. I have cheap network hardware, and have never needed better. All this is to say Kodi mounting NFS shouldn’t need much bandwidth or high end gear. Perhaps the issue is on the playback side. Good luck!
