This is the heart of Reddit - total coordination of random users uniting for a common cause and message.
What’s the back story for using John Oliver? What did I miss🤔
Several subs had a vote and changed their rules to only allow John Oliver content. The vote was done to ensure the mods are not deciding over the desire of their user base as spez had claimed they do.
I have to agree - this is classic reddit. Spez obviously couldn’t care less about namecalling.
The corp gets to use the CEO as a punching bag - which is pretty much his job description…
Redditors can feel good about upvoting a picture “sticking it to the man” while actually doing nothing - participating on a site that’s still reaming them
Buying all the reddit awards for the post, GIVING THE COMPANY THEY’RE SUPPOSEDLY STICKING IT TO MORE MONEY. Bullshit like this pisses me off after finding out the Lemmy devs pretty much make less than minimum wage with donations
Pretty sure most awards given are free. My account has a bunch of coins on it for some reason.
I thought the free awards thing stopped a while back. I’d be surprised if a lot of people still had them
I have thousands of coins on my account. Coins used to be way more plentiful before awards got enshittified.
People could also dump their already purchased coins into fuck spez posts to be fair. Just because they gave an award here doesn’t mean they specifically purchased it for that occasion.

I think John Oliver is just very memeable
It helps that he’s a great person.
Plus, he’s reacted to people using his image in unusual ways before. He has an absolutely hilarious episode where he responds to someone mass generating AI created art of him in love with a cabbage. He noted the AI did a poor job, presumably through lack of adequate training data, so he married a cabbage in camera to help provide said training data!
Also, he might run it on his show, which adds fuel to the Reddit bonfire.
Sadly, his show is currently off the air due to the writer’s strike. Hope it’s not so long that this isn’t ancient history by the time he’s back.
