Btw, letting plaintext data touch the drive is very 2013.
I have an external Usb Dock that i connect to a PC and run a Wiper. Depending on the size it takes quite a while. Maythe there is a wipe function built into your NAS.
Pop it into a different machine and use a tool like dban to wipe it.

ShredOS, lovely little USB boot system that you can use to wipe a drive like that. I would usually go with a 3 pass cleaning. Another option can be to use something like veracrypt to do an in place whole disk encryption that’ll make anything on it unreadable.
What do you do with a faulty RAID drive? Early in the morning!
