Hey all. I’m currently trialling out IPTV providers, and one of the things that’s putting me off entirely is the lack of decent Mac apps, specifically ones that allow for Xtream logins and not only m3u.

The provider I’m testing out suggested Smarters Lite from the iPad store – it runs fine, but it fullscreens with black borders down the sides.

Aside from that, I’ve tried IPTVnator (FOSS, so that’s great) but doesn’t actually display the content.

The only thing that works great for individual channel viewing is using Stremio with an add-on, but there’s no EPG interface there, so no channel hopping and other features.

Any suggestions?

ETA: compatibility with Apple Silicon (M1/M2) chips would be vital too.

Why are you using MaCOS as a pirate? That just seems like trying to make more trouble for yourself.

Why are you gatekeeping pirating based on the platform a person chooses to use or has access to? If they want to use that, let them use that and be happy.

I’m not gatekeeping, they can use it if they want. I’m just acknowledging that it makes pirating harder.

My life goal isn’t to make pirating as easy as possible for myself. There are plenty of reasons to use MacOS over Windows (bracketing Linux distros for the moment), chiefly that it’s not a broken and endlessly frustrating experience on a daily basis for everyday tasks.

I don’t game on PC, which is the only reason I’d have a machine running Windows in my household.

I use Android and MacOS as my operating systems of choice, and that is more than suitable for piracy setups for most media. E.g. music (soulseek), films and series (real debrid + stremio), adblocking (Adguard, root mode). I don’t have a particular need to pirate software or games.

Do whatever you want. I don’t care what operating system you use. Obviously you do and prefer MaCOS over Linux för your own reasons. Carry on trying to pirate on it, it’s great when people do what they can for FOSS.

As somebody who’s been using macOS as a platform for piracy for over 20 years, I assure you it does not make it more difficult in anyway whatsoever. I’m sorry you’re having troubles, but they’re not related to the platform.

Not op, but macOS is the only desktop OS I have, and it is easy as fuck to pirate, or at least that has been my case since many years ago.

Kodi + PVR IPTV addon. I use this addon, keep in mind that it doesn’t support Apple silicon https://kodi.tv/addons/matrix/pvr.iptvsimple/

Ah thanks for this, but Apple silicon support would be essential in my case

Won’t it run through Rosetta?

This new Apple thingy sounds so over complicated, what is Rosetta?

It’s basically a tool to run x64 programs on arm

As nice as it sounds it seems like an “over complicated” workaround, but at least there are workarounds.

It’s not tho. It auto installs and runs when you open an x64 app. As far as I remember I only had to click yes once to confirm the install. I would be surprised if op doesn’t already have it installed.

Yeah it’s incredibly easy and you don’t even notice. Can use the activity monitor to check whether it’s running natively or through that translation layer, and often you wouldn’t even realise. Maybe this Kodi addon would work then, given Rosetta, I don’t know. But I’m not the biggest fan of Kodi tbh. Presently I have the service running through Jellyfin and that’s great, so would probably not bother with Kodi now.

Yeah, I didn’t mean it in functionality, more like an extra step for people, but a needed one for those models ofc, I don’t know if I’m being clear.

Are you able to set up a jellyfin server on your device? If so there’s an xtream plugin on GitHub from a custom repository. https://github.com/Kevinjil/Jellyfin.Xtream

Jellyfin should be able to handle m3u fine natively iirc.

I’ll look into this! Is Jellyfin something I could set up on a router (FritzBox)? I’ll find out more

Edit: got this working now - thanks for the tip!

Glad to hear! Tbh I wasn’t sure how well it would work but if you’re watching your content on your computer already, might as well run the jellyfin server there too if the system is powerful enough.

Yup, works flawlessly, and that’s the setup I have at the moment. Just wondered if it was possible on the router though, since my main device is a laptop and I don’t have it running all the time.

Router, no, unless your router is also a VM and you can run another VM for Jellyfin alongside it. You could get an inexpensive Intel box with a proc that has a roughly recent version of QuickSync on the iGPU, install Jellyfin there, and connect to your Jellyfin server from there.

A rare find while lurking Lemmy on my alt. I appreciate that you recommend it, as people using your work is the best reward for such a FOSS project. You even made me create a Lemmy account on my real nickname ;)

Oh hey there haha. While I haven’t needed anything that handles those kinds of streams, I appreciate the work you have put on to extend the functionality of Jellyfin even just a little bit. I love seeing the support and community around JF and hope that, some day, it is able to fully replace Plex as my main media server.

I use IPTVX and it’s been working well. Use it on both my iPhone and M1 MBP.

Aside from that, I’ve tried IPTVnator (FOSS, so that’s great) but doesn’t actually display the content.

What do you mean it doesn’t display the content? And IPTVnator added Xtream support about 3 weeks ago with version 0.14.0

Yep, that’s why I tried it out – because it added Xtream support. What I meant was that it downloads the channel listings fine, but when you go to play anything, nothing loads. I think it might be because it requires a string in the user agent login field (unlike most Xtream login panels).
