You wouldn’t need to think about this if you configured your torrent client correctly. Bind it to your VPN’s network interface… in qBittorrent that’s in Options / Advanced / Network Interface. You could also search around for info on that.
Chances of actually getting picked up on pirating are absolutely tiny, they only really care about capturing uploaders.
In 15 years of pirating without a VPN in the UK I’ve only ever received a single letter, which was just a half arsed scare tactic.
The constant reminders about the absolute need for a VPN to avoid getting caught is just VPN provider propaganda imo. It’s ideal to have it, but in reality you’ll be fine.
In the past I actually have had a few slip ups to which nothing has happened, not even a letter. Even as a stupid kid when I first found torrenting I of course wasn’t using a VPN. Even with that in mind, I wouldn’t trust sailing with nothing. Sailing in the nude feels wrong.

I’m not entirely sure. But one way of avoiding that problem altogether is to enable a VPN kill switch.
I was using a killswitch and I had qBt binded to my VPN, but I always feel icky when I slip up and leave torrents run unsupervised.
I know what you mean, but what is your plan if you find out your IP leaked? Leave the country? Start putting money aside for a legal fund?

No logs that I know of, but granted I’ve been primarily using qbittorrent-nox and not the main client.
