According to Wikipedia, the lastest version of eMule was released in 2010, but “official forum users” developed an updated version as of 2017.

Is this information up to date? Is that still true? I’d feel a lot better installing something on my computer that was last updated at least in this decade, which version of eMule should i pick, if any?

I use MLDonkey 3.1.7 (July 2020) with debian 12.

I used it on Ubuntu server, because I wanted to cross share my torrents on that network just to keep it alive, however it had a memory leak and would eat all of 32GB of RAM in couple of days. Had to give it up. I even tried to compile it myself, because I read somewhere that one of the libraries caused the issue, but it didn’t solve it for me. It’s a shame it’s not in active development anymore.

Well, I have running mldonkey for months non-stop without problems, only shutting up the system for updates. I used precompiled .deb from debian sid (I think it is not available anymore, but I am sharing through ed2k/kad). I am sorry that you had this problem, maybe it is because it is Ubuntu and not debian, who knows.

Shit, eMule still exists? The only thing I remember about using it centuries ago, was the high chance of downloading viruses, and getting shitty rips of single music tracks.

Oddly enough, I was just thinking the same thing about Winamp.

Well you can see there are two versions in the emule homepage: v0.50a and v0.60d. The latter is the community one. You can find its source code at https://github.com/irwir/eMule.

I have used both on Windows 10 and now mainly use the v0.60d. As far as I can tell, it is working as intended.

Short answer: why?

Long answer: Try using a different client that connects to the same P2P network. The most recently updated one is aMule at “only” 2 years. Most of them are much older.

Using amule on Linux since almost a year, it was so long from the last time I remember, it works fine.

I suggest to use mldonkey. The UX is very different so it takes some time to accustom to it but it is very powerful software:

  • it connects to more than one server
  • the search is better
  • it is very stable Be sure to use the latest version, keep an updated server list (or fetch them from clients and servers) and to configure kad.

It works very good for niche stuff, especially if you have a community around the stuff being shared
