just an inquiry out of curiosity: why are more people not using Gimp? does PS really offer so much more?
(this is more an aside to the conversation in the OP, and as such is not meant to derail the query asked within. nor is it an attempt to pass judgement on anyone.)
If you are doing professional work. than Gimp doesn’t come close to Photoshop, when they will introduce non-destructive editing Gimp will definitely become better. but PS keeps widening the gap with very powerful tools like AI fill an stuff.
OP wants to download Photoshop Elements, I highly doubt they want to do professional work. For casual use cases, GIMP is more than enough once you take 10-20 minutes to learn its quirks (if coming from Photoshop).
I’m really not one to criticize the work of unpaid and/or underpaid open-source devs, I know they’re giving us the end result of countless hours of labour for free. But even I’ll admit GIMP needed a redesign 10 years ago. It’s kinda crazy that software used to create beautiful things looks like such shit, and just the UI has probably turned many people away from GIMP.
I am not criticizing the free work of the open source community. it is just a recognition that commercial software is way ahead of anything the FOSS community has produced so far. And this is true for almost all software categories
People don’t know about GIMP and are allergic to trying new things.
Also speaking as someone who started with GIMP and then had to use PS for a class the change of UI is really painful if you are used to something, given how complicated photo editors are.
Even less related, but how did you learn using GIMP?
Currently I just use various phone apps, which is obviously not quite ideal.
I just started with basic projects (phone and pc wallpapers) then moved to more advanced projects (game textures, photo construction)
most people i know, that use ps,
complain about the controls not being the same / weird when they try gimp.
kinda similar, to what i hear about blender
so i think the main culprits are force of habit and muscle memory
My point of view why:
There are a lot of photoshop extensions made by users who spread the word of ps. Marketing is huge, also the extension library. People show how easy it is to do this and that and there’s little on gimp.
Honestly, every time I try my hand at Gimp, I give up after a couple of minutes. I’m a big proponent of FLOSS, but Gimp feels like a mess. It also looks like the UI hasn’t changed since 1995.
Yeah, GIMP for me is waay too complicated. I need a simple one like Krita or Pinta.
non destructive editing like people are pointing out, for me a big thing is content aware stuff (fill, crop), and also just being used to PS
huh? do you mean undo history? It is on Gimp, and I think it even made into Windows Paint at this point
no, its like if I erase a part of a picture, I can bring it back at any point without undoing
so let’s say I erase someone’s eye, and in a new layer I paint something there. I edit that thing for an hour. now I decide I want that eye back, I can simply unerase it
I still can’t understand. In your example most likely I selected the eye then clicked suppr, I can go back and copy it after selection? Or you’re talking about an ability to re-arrange actions ?
does this project (there is a demonstration video in the link) address the thing ?
because usually, edits are “baked in”. you crop, the program discards the pixels that you cut off. Photoshop remembers those pixels, just doesn’t render them
yes
Also, shit UX/UI. The MuseScore designer should take over GIMP and save it.
Same question about Krita.Which i found better than gimp
Cmacked is a good place to start
