I agree. But I would go further and say if other industries didnt have more complex schemes and locked down IP (eg car manufacturing), people would def build their own shit with current tools. Its always the greed of those not willing to invest in innovation that keeps progress away. Media piracy and FOSS culture are the only real challengers to greed imo.
Having as much on one machine as possible has efficiency and maintenance benefits since you have less machines to configure. The drawback is that multiple services can add up peak demands and run the machine oom which you can either solve by leaving extra headroom or make them redundant imo.
Someone with more experience than me might have other ideas to add.
It really doesnt matter much imo. The obvious best choice here would be three copies on three media in three locations. You can also argue for more. It depends on your threat model. If you have an offsite backup that is reachable from the host machine, a ransomware attack can still devastate you. I have therefore made deaddrops for backups so no machine or user has access to all of them.
This is applicable to any number of things. Those of us who are into computer games would mostly like companies to release them in a finished state but are pretty helpless against abusive marketing and peer pressure. Our friends in gaming are also a network.
The important takeaway here for me is that we meed to abplish the idea of „voting with your wallet“ since this mechanic is broken in the presence of networking effects. E.g. you not only miss out on the game/app/product but you hurt your network and become more isolated.
Thanks for elaborating a bit. I opted against the password app since I wanted to diversify services. My nextcloud is a bit finnicky at times and wants to be updated before you can proceed with stuff. Having no access to my passwords in that moment would be harsh. So I opted for vaultwarden and it even has firefox integration, cli integration and a desktop app for linux (dunno about windows, honestly). I‘m not sure if it was a bad idea to put NC‘s database on spinning discs though. Maybe that was stupid.
As you can see, very much a WIP as well. I feel like we need some kind of place to accumulate iCloud -> NC expats. A lot of good could be done there.
I‘m on matrix as well but i‘m not proficient yet. My wife is still on whatsapp so I need to be patient. We have gotten rid of twitter and reddit which I count as a win.
What other projects do you have? Feel free to send me a dm with your matrix username if you want to keep in touch about this.
I‘m also migrating from iCloud (to NC among other things) and its been slow to say the least. Things I struggle with:
For those who don’t know NC, these things are 1/10 of the stuff that NC is actually good at imo.
How is your experience so far?
Please don’t kill me but does anyone else find this story missing some steps?
Like if vpns are actually legal (which they should be imo) and he has not done anything wrong why dont we get the legal reason for this confiscation?
I can understand that china is brutal but they will definitely veil their anti information countermeasures a bit better than „you used vpn! That is illegal! Pay all your income! Although vpns are legal here!“
It does read weird.
Nextcloud (or docker for that matter) are rather complex.
Permission problems are every day life in linux, you always have to sudo or - if you change that - someone else can vaporize your server and steal all your data. Linux is infinitely more secure because it is a nightmare to use casually with a complex setup. Some windows script kiddie is gonna die inside your directories and never be found again.
Writing a script that you need to make executable first? Chowning files that are made by docker? Having to use a specific user inside docker (in case of nextcloud especially)?
All these things are incredibly frustrating but given the sheer complexity of nextcloud, it’s actually working rather good imo. So does linux.
I‘m not shitting on linux, docker or nc. I love them all but saying they’re not working just says they’re not plug and play yet. Other examples: most things snap are a mystery for me. Freakin permissions.
That actually makes sense. We had a ransomware attack once. We also disconnected the device but I cant remember if we powered it off. At the time it stopped encrypting due to that since our network drives were not reachable anymore.
Is there actually a way to spread the encryption process to a server?
Heyo! Your question led me to check some stuff since my wife wants to upgrade at some point as well.
Since we are slowly moving away from the intel/nvidia/windows ecosphere towards amd/linux/open source, we figured she should go with am5 when she changes her motherboard.
The b650-s and ryzen 5 7600 combined with gskill ripjaws s5 32gig. All together was roughly 500 bucks. The cooler needs to go on top obviously. We already have a gpu but if we needed one I‘d probably go with the amd 7600 since it is fairly new and pretty cheap.
Just so you know, I have put in quite some reaearch on gpus recently but nothing else so I‘m fairly positive about the gpu, a little less certain on the rest. The 7600 is not far from the 6700 xt imo and better in terms of fps per dollar/euro.
The nvidia 3060ti is pretty much the same but I think amd is the better decision going forward since nvidia is being a dick about their drivers forever and amd is more futureproof if you leave windows.
Good luck with your build.
I understand you frustration but you are hurting everyone with this statement.
At this point, russia is still struggling for total control (not yet n korea) over their citizens. If we cut them off, we hand over the keys to everything russia to that insane individual.
This would have very dire implications.
Thats only what I could come up with in a couple minutes but cutting russia off is just not a good idea at all.
Have a good one.
Thank you for explaining. This helps me understand both his and this here situation.
First of all, I‘m totally ok with it being absurd. It was my impression that this person has been wronged and should be appropriately compensated for their (shit ton of) work. From the text, it seemed like there is a way to get this compensation (in the form of recognition of some sort).
I‘m totally fine with being told that he misrepresented the situation and he‘s more going off a principle here which would never be enforceable. If there were such a „standard“ for recognition for kernel controbution, one could definitely try to enforce it.
In general, I have no problem with standing corrected. What I do have a problem with is the way people in IT centric communities on lemmy (and reddit) behave in general.
Obviously you were kind enough to explain instead and without being violent or abusive. I highly respect that. Thanks again.
I would absolutely try to sue in this case. My experiences with very experienced specialists is not stellar at all. The amount of gatekeeping and sheer arrogance is frightening. I get it, nobody wants to work on the kernel. It’s an underpaid (presumably) and underappreciated task. I would probably become an asshole as well if I dedicated 90% of my free time to fixing obscure bugs in even more obscure architecture.
Disclaimer: I‘m not a kernel dev and my experience stems from interactions with maybe 100 people of varying stages of proficiency. Sadly, the more proficient, the less friendly they often were.
Edit: the amount of downvotes you get for saying something unpopular without being violent or abusive is showing the lack of guts to discuss something in a civilized manner. Shame on you.
Sure! Feel free. I mean, I can read wikipedia and it basically says „private ownership of the means of production used for profit.“ as well as „competitive markets“ which are not what we are seeing nowadays.
I‘m used to being misunderstood due to my differently wired brain but I‘m always eager to learn. So hit me. :)
Sounds awesome. I have like 6 small speakers and a tv bar. Not ready to drop them rn since I too want to be able to listen to music taking a shower while my wife listens to something else in the living room. I’m pretty sure people will have figured this out somehow. Time to find some audiophile selfhosted community. :) Besides that, I tend to ask myself why does a service have no viable/selfhosted competition. Most times it is anticompetitive behavior afaik but we’re unable to see it because they’re discreet.
I have barely anything to add to that. Awesome thoughts. Sonos has since fallen out of grace with me as well (same as apple) but I own both brands still since I don’t throw things away if I can help it and exchanging them rn would only hurt me. So I try to make do until the very last moment and then I will switch. I’m stubborn like that.
Speaking of old music: I’m a violinist and mostly listen to bach (mostly performed by hilary hahn). I have visited two of her concerts and plan on buying her album(s) on vinyl once I get wifi on my vinyl player. Other than that its mostly CCR. So old music is my favorite as well.
Thank you very much for elaborating. I’ll see to it that I at least have a fall back library soon. :)
I can see why you would think that. I think this video explains it well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDPPig9JR5Y.
TL;DW: Capitalism in it’s true form was “I give you this, you give me that”. Exchange of goods. And from that perspective, it has worked. But now that nobody sells stuff anymore but holds you or the goods you want hostage, it has devolved back to the old system of feudalism where you live somewhere and the king asks for your work and money so you can live there.
I’m not saying thats the only way to look at it but I find the explanation pretty good. It would explain why so many people who are actually very good at trading things struggle in this climate now while others now thrive who have no clue how to produce viable products.
Thanks for answering. I do the same with my blu rays and dvds but I haven’t had local music for years so I will have to look at that.
My problem also is that not apple music is down but sonos, which is not a subscription service but physical hardware that I have bought. The old „kill switch“ problem so to speak.
I‘ll look into finding a solution that makes me able to go around online obligation.
Have a good day. :)
I use ionos since 10 years and I‘m very happy, but only for webhosting stuff. The VPS Services I get from Hetzner and I havent really tested them.
I did have a meeting with IONOS this week though about it and I‘m positive about the UI for new vps owners since its quite easy to grasp but I dont think they’re a better option than hetzner.
