Starlink and low-orbit sats for internet coverage are a similar leap ahead in cost and speed to deploy. Elon and his goons saw it coming long before anyone else did, and the fact they also have Space X was a pretty key part of their speed to deploy.
Starlink was SpaceXs solution to having a reusable first stage rocket and not enough demand for all the flights they could now do.
They basically poured billions into perfecting reuse, and had to find a way to make money on the new but upfront costly capabilities so they came up with starlink.
Edit: it also gave them a safer way to more easily test flight proven rockets with what was at the time more weary customers of the tech. For awhile NASA still wanted new rockets, but then became fine with flight proven as all the extra flights showed it was okay.
The conversation was concerns about what China can do to the cars, but China is also concerned about what other manufactures can do with their cars. The concern goes both ways, it’s not just the west afraid of china. The concern about these highly connected cars is legitimate for everyone on both sides.
I believe now that Tesla stores the data in China that some of that has been relaxed.
I looked it up once and the average Canadian/USA commute (at least in non winter weather) can be done on a 120v 5-15 outlet.
Harsher winters would probably need the 5-20 outlets (or indoor parking) to maintain that level though.
Edit: and ya having charging at work would make the winters better as it adds an extra 8 hours of charging you’d lose otherwise.
Even the Chinese government is wary of US based manufactures having their cars near sensitive areas because of all the cameras. Tesla had to ensure that all the data was stored in and didn’t leave a facility based in China before they allowed the cars to be in those areas.
It’s a legit problem for every country. It’s possible other countries might require the same.
I don’t know what the current laws are in each province, but we if we don’t have them yet, we really need new laws that require
Apartments/Condo’s to install chargers if paid for by the renter/owner. This is obviously less ideal for apartments, and more about condo’s, but it becomes a start for apartments as well. You could install a plug (not a charger) at an apartment and use your own charger which would at least reduce costs if you were going to stay a long time and weren’t worried about being evicted for some reason.
New builds must have at least X amount of 120v outlets available for parking spots at a bare minimum. Make them NEMA 5-20 outlets which give a few more amps and can charger the cars a little bit faster (10-12km/h vs 6-8km/h), but will also work with regular 5-15 plugs. Ideally, also require some 30amp or 50amp plugs, but we gotta start somewhere at least.
At least online where these people conflate being able to spew hate speech as free speech, the vast majority don’t even understand its only about protection from the government.
They think they’re able to say anything they want and be free of consequences from everyone else in society, but that’s not what it is, and then cry afoul when they face it.
These are usually meant for shorter buildings, and I imagine the staircases are all concrete and can’t catch fire.
That being said, if you’re in a multi level building and it’s only a handful of levels, you should have a window escape ladder as the fire could be just outside your apartment, or in your apartment blocking the door
Maybe they should even be included, a 4 story, 4 units a level building would only be 16 ladders to provide.
I feel like something like https://www.storj.io/ is on the path to what we would want/need?
There might be some additional requirements for a true CDN to ensure data is closer to where it’s needed and in as many regions as needed though with the right amount of bandwidth. The data gets stored all over the place, but that doesn’t mean its optimal. But they do seem to claim it’s faster on their website…
Edit: For those not wanting to click, TLDR is they use excess storage around the world and make it accessible anywhere, and safe from failures. People with excess storage can join the network if they have enough storage/bandwidth and pass some tests. Their API is S3 compatible.
Ford is literally begging for this to “revitalize” downtowns.
Like, maybe, we should readjust what downtown looks like, so we can avoid this wear and tear, save the environment, and save people (and cities) money?
Maybe we should be making the downtowns more livable places so there are people there at all hours of the day to support whatever services are there?
Government passes shitty law that causes boycott and threats of boycott.
Government caves to altering their shitty bill to end threat of boycott
Government declares their shitty bill a win
News flash- the bill was shit. You fucked up. Everyone told you you fucked up. You should have negotiated this before passing the shitty bill.
Over here in Victoria, people have been complaining non stop since the start of putting in protected bike lanes. We have a really good connected network now, but at the start when the first lane went in, there was such an uproar about this useless short lane that went nowhere before the network had even been built. It was pretty amusing to watch the idiots speak out like that about the short lane.
