Monkey island is a series I got into relatively recently and I absolutely adore it.

I mentioned in another thread recently how humongous games was a huge part of my childhood. Pajama Sam especially was and remains some of my all time favorite games.

As I got older and learned more about Ron Gilbert (the creator of humongous and all of those things) I learned about Monkey Island and knew I had to play. I have yet to play the non Gilbert games (I know curse of monkey island is beloved by many) but the 3 Gilbert ones are all masterclasses of point and click in my opinion. I think they hold up very well, and the recent return to monkey island was a delight to play. I know some didn’t love the art style of the new one but I really enjoyed it.

Also have to say that monkey island 2 has one of my all time favorite OSTs. (https://youtu.be/pCWkOudkzu4?si=kh4e1g6elJDmvwOB)

That’s cool! I hope it ends up good. My dad was friends with some of the original humongous entertainment crew and all of their games were a huge part of my childhood, especially pajama sam!

The previews so far are more positive than I imagined.... Sh2 is one of my all time favorites. I will eat my words if bloober actually pulls this off!

Ah see for me all I can hear is Chris Redfield when Batman talks haha. He does an ok job but he’s no Kevin Conroy unfortunately. Totally agree on the detective stuff! I love the random case files that come up that aren’t some crazy supervillain plot. Just random crimes done by random people. Good fun

Nice! Yeah blasphemous slaps. The platforming as you say though is unforgiving. I hate the instant spike KOs… Something the sequel thankfully changed

Whatcha been playing! I've been playing Batman Arkham origins. Never played it when it came out but loved the other ones. It's pretty good so far!

Sure they are, however if you come to the conclusion (if you decided to read the article) that voice actors being told with no preparation that they were going to be performing scenes involving SA are whiny babies you’ll be told you’re not being nice which is what we expect on our instance

Yeah… Kind of bummed on it. I’ll try it out with some friends but I doubt we’ll play it for long

No clue but I’m down for a Spelunky short by the people who did love death and robots lol. Sounds lit

Same boat here 😔. I can still remember when I first heard it was officially cancelled. I’ve never been more devastated by any media being cancelled than this

“Lesser evil” shit is something everyone has to unlearn if they are ever going to help anyone.

I don’t agree with the assertions you put forward here, but this one in particular I feel strongly about.

I feel this implies there are other better options available. And this is not always the case.

Harm reduction is something I believe in. Picture a person who is currently addicted to drugs. Their options in life have led them to a crossroads. They need to take something, otherwise risk having painful and potentially deadly withdrawal symptoms. However they know if they keep using, death is likely at the other end as well at some point in the future. In front of them they have 2 choices. A person offering needles. They know this person has been known to provide unclean needles, and using one could have dire consequences. The other choice is using a safe injection site that has been set up. One that can ensure they get as safe and clean of an injection as they can get right now.

While you never explicitly mention the presidential election that is looming, I would like to bring it to that as I feel that is the most relevant application to “lesser of two evils” that we are facing at the moment.

I agree that capitalism is a drug that will eventually get us all killed. The desire to squeeze everything out of something with no regard to how it ends up is where capitalism will get us to. However in this situation, I feel Harris/Walz is the safe injection site. I know I won’t immediately get a disease / be labeled a child predator and be given the death penalty. Trump / Vance is the other option. They are the dirty diseased needle that will accelerate death and pain greatly. You may say you can just not pick either, but I disagree with this. Withdrawal will kill us. With the election we don’t get the benefit of not choosing either. One of the choices will be made whether we like it or not.

The part you may disagree with the most and where I make my own assertions: I feel the general presidential election is not the place for the withdrawal option. This election is always such a focus, for obvious reasons tbf. But there is so much more than that. Withholding support at this level will not help things. It is so much bigger than us. Why not focus on local level things that can actually make an impact. Get socialists elected to local positions. A thing you can have a tangible effect on.

Focusing on the things you can change is what will get us out of this drug addiction that will one day kill us. Withdrawal and the dirty needle will kill us right now. But the safe injection site will give us the time we need to keep living and try and get out of the situation we’re in.

I don’t usually write long messages like this so I apologize if it comes off incoherent. I have ideas in my head but have trouble expressing them occasionally

Favorites

  • Steam Deck
  • Analogue Pocket
  • My PC I suppose. Can do the most!

Least favorite

  • DS-i: just a lot worse than the lite imo. The camera and the few dsi downloadable games were not worth losing GBA back compat
  • PlayStation TV: had potential but was just a worse vita and mediocre streaming box.
  • Piboy: a weird raspberry pi 4 based handheld I had by a company called experimental pi. It was actually kind of cool, but they had their own custom software needed to run on the screen and they were really bad about getting fixes out, and some patches would brick the machine iirc. The company seems to be defunct now. The website is a 404 now

Holy crap that’s an amazing turn of events! And they have the IP. I’m shocked tbh. Microsoft had such a beloved IP in their hands and they let it go. But I’m happier this way!

Lol that’s fair! Been a while since I played it without save states

I kind of feel a lot of 8 bit era games haven’t aged the best. But there are a few that I love. Of course smb3 is really outstanding. That game is timeless and really showed how well Nintendo can make games. While I may personally prefer smw, smb3 was in my eyes the first to perfect the side scrolling platformer.

Mother is another game from the era I enjoy a lot. It hasnt aged as well as smb3, but it’s still a fun game to look back on. I feel the game was a bit ahead of it’s time, and with a few gameplay changes I think it would still be worth playing for any jrpg fan today

Lol I was just about to post this. Yeah this is a decision for sure. Wouldn’t be surprised if this causes another big spike in Lemmy usage

Yeah I think the display port plugs into the headset and that’s the picture data. The controller data is via Bluetooth

Kind of sounds like rocket slime. I looked up games like that and found this. Older than a couple months ago but maybe keeping on the trend of rocket slime like games will help you find it?

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1357860/Fuga_Melodies_of_Steel/

Edit: a sequel to this came out in late 2023 so maybe that’s it

It is! Got it commissioned. Artist’s twitter is in my bio :)

You could play mother 1 for sure if it interests you, although it’s aged the worst out of the 3 in my opinion.

Sad about Mario world :( I find it to be one of the least floaty Mario games, partially due to a mechanic in the game that isn’t present on many others where the speed of your fall is controlled by holding the jump button (many games have variable height by holding the jump button, but few have it so the speed of the fall down is controllable)

As for silent hill I’d argue that they could be seen as more puzzley. There are bosses and enemies of course, but it’s not usually a constant enemy fest. In silent hill 2 (and maybe 3 I can’t quite remember) there are separate combat and puzzle difficulty settings, so you can set easy combat and hard puzzles. Of the original silent hills id recommend silent hill 2 the most. You don’t need to play any others to get it, it’s a self contained story.

No it’s not rewritten. Mainly I just think the pre rendered picture movement of the original can be harder to explore and piece things together than the fully 3d environment of the remakes.

As for Zork, I only played a very small amount for a school assignment lol. I considered it esoteric in a way I feel all text adventures are, but I really don’t have enough experience to say.

I’ll list off some of the older titles on my faves list

  • Earthbound is on there, so glad you got that one :)
  • Mother 3 (GBA)
  • Mario and Luigi superstar saga (GBA)
  • Super Mario World (SNES)
  • Super Metroid, zero mission, fusion (SNES and GBA)
  • Myst (lots of platforms these days but originally pc)
  • Resident evil 1-4 (ps1-2)
  • Kirby superstar (SNES) / Kirby superstar ultra (DS)
  • Silent Hill 1-4 (ps1-2)

I’m def missing some here. I would argue not all of these have necessarily stood the test of time if we look at it from a modern sensibility lens. Particularly resident evil 1-3 and silent hill 1 can be a bit difficult to play if you can’t get used to tank controls. And Myst can be a bit esoteric, especially the older versions.

Besides that though I really do think these have all stood the test of time. I would like to particularly shout out the original re4. Despite having a recent remake that I adore potentially more than the original, the original is still so good even to this day. It is wild to me how well it still feels to play

Yesss its such a good hack! I loved version 1.0 but 2.0 is a whole other level. No other hack touches it in terms of qol features in my opinion. And it’s endlessly replayable. Pokemon distilled down to its best bits!

Not on steam but you can get it drm free from their website with a native Linux version :)

I’m happy you decided to repost this.

An article that discusses and re-examines if a game you like is good is not a personal attack.

I encourage anyone who thinks it is indeed a good game (hey I also enjoyed it back in the day) take the time to read the article and at least respond to the content posted.

It is absolutely fine to disagree with what the article is saying. And it’s fine if you don’t want to read it. But I don’t think it’s bee-ing nice to comment that you refused to read an innocent article because you disagree with the headline and it’s source. The article was posted to discuss its contents (as the body of the post pointed out). Not whether or not polygon is worthwhile.

If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all ya know?

Whatcha all playing! Gonna be honest, it's just more shadow of the erdtree for me. Been playing the shit out of it. Bonus question: any game you got during the steam summer sale you want to shout out?

I typically don’t keep the nividia or windows gaming stuff turned on. Having it built into steam will be nice, since I use their overlay a lot more. Plus steam deck support is really nice!

Well I suppose the issue is that not everyone sees the obscureness as a problem. I love the Myst games and quern, but I think it would be a bad idea to change the puzzles to be different. The Myst series is quite difficult to be sure, but that’s part of why I love them. I don’t think everyone needs a guide to finish, but if one does every now and then, is that really such a bad thing? For single player, whatever method of playing that gives you the most enjoyment is the correct way to play

Fortunately, that is not the case. It’s fascinating to see this missing link of game design. It’s nice to dig into some genuinely excellent writing and art. The puzzles are as opaque as they ever were, which is what a lot of people like about them. I think we need more remakes like Riven, that capture as much as they can about how games felt back then. That’s how we move forward, that’s how games get even better. ------------- **[Checkpoint Gaming](https://opencritic.com/outlet/563/checkpoint-gaming)** - [Kolby James](https://opencritic.com/critic/9568/kolby-james) - [8.5 / 10](https://checkpointgaming.net/reviews/2024/06/riven-review-the-ultimate-final-form-of-an-epic-classic/) >Overall the remake of Riven is an excellent effort on all fronts. The original Riven was already an exceptionally high quality title that is still playable even today. This new ground-up remake takes that epic title and introduces it to a new generation. This is definitely its final form and stands on its own as an excellent release. I highly recommend it, not just to fans of the original but to any gamer who enjoys puzzle games. ------------- **[EIP Gaming](https://opencritic.com/outlet/808/eip-gaming)** - [Dylan Graves](https://opencritic.com/critic/9639/dylan-graves) - [8.1 / 10](https://eip.gg/reviews/riven/) >Riven is still one of the best puzzle games of all time, with challenging puzzles, an intricate plot, and a gorgeous world that all fold into each other in great ways. It's a wonderful experience, except for how slow it can be at points. As a remake, the full 3d movement and stunning new graphics add a lot, though replacing the FMV cutscenes with in-game cutscenes does pull away some of the game's original charm. ------------- **[Entertainium](https://opencritic.com/outlet/751/entertainium)** - [Gareth Brading](https://opencritic.com/critic/7134/gareth-brading) - [Masterpiece](https://entertainium.co/2024/06/24/riven-review/) >The Myst games will always hold a special place in my heart, and although their spiritual successors like Obduction and The Talos Principle fill much of the same gap, there’s nothing which is quite like them. The complexity and challenge of the puzzles has long been a source of frustration for some players, as the game never holds your hand or offers hints. Riven and its sequel Myst III: Exile are the clear highlights of this formula in both style and content, with Exile still being my personal favourite. For this reason I do hope that Cyan feels comfortable giving Exile the same remake treatment next, even though they weren’t the original developers (that being the long defunct Presto Studios). The Riven remake is an expert modernization and expansion to the original, bringing its gorgeous worlds fully to life, and still packed full of fairly challenging puzzles. ------------- **[GameLuster](https://opencritic.com/outlet/681/gameluster)** - [Axel Cushing](https://opencritic.com/critic/9532/axel-cushing) - [8 / 10](https://gameluster.com/riven-review-from-ages-past/) >Updated for modern systems, Riven reminds us why it's a classic adventure game. Perhaps a bit short now, occasionally obtuse in its puzzles, but still visually stunning and engaging. ------------- **[Gamer Escape](https://opencritic.com/outlet/452/gamer-escape)** - [Josh McGrath](https://opencritic.com/critic/3285/josh-mcgrath) - [9 / 10](https://gamerescape.com/2024/06/24/review-riven-2024/) >When I first went into the Riven remake, I really wasn't sure if I would enjoy it or not. I had only played Myst once back when I was ten or so, and I couldn't make heads or tales of it back then. Seeing fans of the game talk about its difficulty had me nervous as well. > >But once I found myself immersed in the world, everything just kind of...clicked. Riven isn't an obstuse puzzle box like I expected. It's a surprisingly fleshed-out world. One of seeming loneliness, one of mystery, one that wound up being absolutely enthralling. One that absolutely won't be for everyone, but if it manages to hook you in, good luck getting it to let go. > >Riven is a game that demands your full attention, occasionally to its detriment. If you aren't locked in and focused, it is easy to lose the trail the game is gently leading you on. You can’t help but leave the game wanting to learn more about the strange and mysterious world it welcomes you into. So that was a thread huh?

Sorry to have to lock the post and clean up some comments, but I think it’s safe to say that gamergater apologia is not cool on the gaming community here.

Please do not downplay death threats, especially when they come from a site absolutely known for sending them out. Think what you want about SBI, but to deny Gamergate and other harassment campaigns and the damage they have caused is dangerous and also absolutely does not contribute to making beehaw a safe place.

Thanks ❤️

never targeted by harassment

Sweet Baby Inc found themselves at the center of attention at kiwi farms, a website known for harassment and driving people to suicide. I find it very far fetched to believe they received no harassment.

Ubisoft being in bed with SBI is also not a lie

Unless I totally missed it, I see nowhere in this article that said they didn’t work with SBI?

Everything I have seen points to Yasuke being a samurai. Lots of reading on it sourced in this reddit comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/1css0ye/comment/l4bghbu/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
