Are there advantages to this over self hosting Vaultwarden?

I got a mini pc (e.g. a NUC). I did this after the price for rasps went sky high. Check out used NUCs, you can get a lot of power for the price.

I backup Proxmox VMs and templates onto my NAS, and from there into the cloud. If you don’t want the cloud maybe auto backup to an external drive and keep it somewhere safe (out of range of a possible disaster to your home)

I went with a Synology and have been very happy with it. Easy to use, very nice GUI, yet quite powerful with the features provided.

From there I moved on to NUC. I used to host several things through Docker on the Synology but I’m now moving many of those things to the NUC.

I have a 5g home internet backup connection. My primary internet is fiber, so my thinking if there is a cut somewhere it could also affect cable, so I use over the air as my backup.

Ugh, what a mess. Thought about this for a while today and three thoughts started circulating in my head:

  1. Hire an actual lawyer and get firm legal advice on this issue. I think this would fall to the admins, not the devs. Maybe an admin who wanted could volunteer to contact a lawyer? We could do a gofundme for one-time consultation legal fees.

  2. Stop using pictrs completely and instead use links to a third party such as Imgur or whatever. They’re in this business and I’m sure already have dealt with it and have a solution. Yes it sucks that Imgur (or whatever third party) could delete our legitimate images at any time, but IMHO it’s worth it to avoid this headache. At any rate it offloads the liability from an admin. Of course, IANAL and this is a question we would want to ask a lawyer about.

  3. Needing a GPU increases the expenses for an admin significantly. It will start to not be worth it for quite a few to keep their instance running.

Thanks for bringing up this point. This is obviously a nuanced issue that is going to need a well-thought-out solution.

I was thinking the same thing. Stop storing the images and offload to Imgur or whatever. They likely already have a solution for this issue. Show images inline instead of a link. Looks the same, no liability.

Saying that, this is tremendously cool. I was given pause though by another poster on the thread mentioning the legality of using this in the U.S.

LMAO. So, so true and I have no problem with it. Self-hosted seems to be one of the most active communities on Lemmy. I learn a lot and y’all all seem cool.

How ironic it would be if somebody showered them with riches to go and create mayhem within Russia. My experience of mercenaries is that they are not too picky about whose money they take.

That’s an interesting take I hadn’t considered. There are plenty of parties who could pay more than Russia. They’d just need to find a way to do it without being caught.

“I feel like it was a political indictment, but I absolutely believe it’s true. And that’s my problem with Trump.” But if Trump wins the GOP nomination and faces a rematch against Biden, she’ll reluctantly vote for him, she said.

What?! So she does believe the indictments against Trump are true, but will vote for a criminal to lead the country?

7 out of 10 Republicans view Trump favorably. It’s nuts.

Ummm yeah it will be in “Phase 2” of the project.

Holy crap DeSantis has triple the war chest of Trump and Haley has more than half of Trump. I did not know that.

If I ran one of Trump’s super pacs I would be irate with him and his legal expenses. I’d be bailing and support a candidate ASAP who isn’t wasting my money.

There is no functionality in the interface so there is nothing to test. You test the logic of the implemented methods.

With that said, with reflection you can at least test that an interface has the right method names and annotations present, but I’ve extremely rarely found it useful to do so.

Besides the CPU how was the other resource usage on your VPS? Like memory, storage, etc

I don’t like the “attention token” nonsense—I turn that off—but I love Brave and its search engine. It is cool to have a search engine return results that are actually different than other SE’s and have those results be very good.

In fact, I find its results to often be better than the big search engines because results aren’t overtuned for SEO

Christie was one of the first to drop out of the 2016 primary race in support of Trump. He’s also responsible for essentially ending Rubio’s campaign right in the middle of a debate.

His early Trump support will always define him to me. With that said I’m glad he is actually speaking truth now.

As much as I appreciate what she has accomplished in her career, it is long past time to step down. I agree with the poster advocating for an age limit for public servants.

My setup exactly, with the addition of using M-Discs to backup my core important stuff.

I am completely out of the loop and had not heard of this company’s products, including this one. Looks awesome! I’m surprised it plays GBA games in addition to GB and GBC.

I know I have my Pokemon Silver cartridge around somewhere. I’ve got plenty of GBA ones. Maybe time to look at this device.

Oooh I’m getting motivated by this post.

  • Home Assistant
  • Pihole
  • Jellyfin
  • Plex
  • *arr series, at least up when I am looking for specific content
  • Lemmy

I tried Mastodon. Too resource intensive for little I use it.

Next up in my list to try:

  • Vaultwarden
  • Peertube
  • Matrix
  • Bookwyrm

I use a 4-bay Synology. Works great. For video you could use Plex or Jellyfin.

Home Assistant was the first thing I self hosted. It wasn’t until now with Lemmy though that I am hooked. I’m looking into hosting a Matrix instance next. I tried Mastodon but it’s resource needs were much higher than I needed for my usage. I may give it a try again sometime. Peertube is also on the list.

Thank you for this write-up. Your post is the only place I can find on the internet on making the transition to object storage specifically with Lemmy.

Totally agree. I need to then pick apart the run command to make the docker compose file, then get something wrong and need to do a search.

I debated the same with myself. I went with Synology and haven’t looked back. It just works without me having to think about it.

What is the benefit of this over just running Wireguard?

My experience exactly. I keep telling myself I should set a cron job or something to purge the logs after some time, but it happens infrequently enough that it’s not a big deal.

Also very interested in this.

This doesn’t surprise me. The “features” that keep being added to Plex drive me nuts. I just want to be able to browse and watch from my own library.

I use Home Assistant for similar purposes, with Influx DB and Grafana. There are many integrations to automatically populate data. For example, I have heart rate data from my Apple Watch flow in so I can view it in Grafana.

Namecheap. I’ve been using them for several years for various projects and have never had a problem with them.

Pokémon Violet. I have the dex. I’ve finished the storyline. I just find raiding fun and relaxing.

I love this game! One of my favorites. Enjoy.
