I will. I was asking from CPU power and price perspective though.

Is Mac Mini suitable for self-hosted server?
The price seems pretty good. I don't really know much about mini PCs. Do you think there is a better alternative? Update: ok, not price efficient. Noted 👍

I’m using Headscale for work and Tailscale for personal use. I tried to use Nebula but it’s not easy as Tailscale.

Unfortunately, I feel the same. As I observed from the commenters here, self-hosting that won’t break seems very expensive and laborious.

Yeah I really like the “parent backup” strategy from @hperrin@lemmy.world :) This way it costs much less.

Pretty solid backup strategy :) I like it.

It’s quite robust, but it looks like everything will be destroyed when your server room burns down :)

Self hosting is hard. How do you overcome?
Not exactly self hosting but maintaining/backing it up is hard for me. So many “what if”s are coming to my mind. Like what if DB gets corrupted? What if the device breaks? If on cloud provider, what if they decide to remove the server? I need a local server and a remote one that are synced to confidentially self-host things and setting this up is a hassle I don’t want to take. So my question is how safe is your setup? Are you still enthusiastic with it?

Can we use group meeting in self hosted version?

Yes, you can shoot me from there and you’re right but I don’t see much difference between Matrix clients. The experience is pretty common between them. Synapse is de facto standard.

I don’t think XMPP is simpler than Matrix. With my insufficient knowledge; XMPP servers and clients have different standards. Some supports audio/video calls, some requires encryption while other maybe not etc.

Matrix has a standard set of features and all software around it built for those features. TBH I find Matrix pretty instable lately tho.

“Ubuntu added on top” you mean Snap? No thanks :)

You need to pass host header. But if you really want to hide your IP, you need to proxy your outgoing activities too.

Thank you for the suggestions. I just created an account on jabber.hot-chilli.net and downloaded Gajim. It looks really cool!

I’ve used Matrix for months and agree with most points. I would like to try XMPP but it is clear that it does not have the best onboarding experience.

The problem I’ve observed with XMPP as an outsider is the lack of a standard. Each server or client has its own supported features and I’m not sure which one to choose.

Which client would you recommend?

I’ve never used XMPP. Can someone compare it with Matrix?

It wasn’t but now it does I guess. I just searched a community didn’t existed locally on my instance and I got same result as you. No votes, no comments. I think this is enough to open an issue in the Lemmy repo.

You need to search them to make them available to your instance. You can also use lemmony or lemmy community seeder to automate it if you care enough.

It just making things easier and cleaner. When you remove a container, you know there is no leftover except mounted volumes. I like it.

Yeah probably all integrations are gonna break 😐

I hate them for injecting embedded ads to subs anyways, so hopefully they ruins the platform more so an alternative can emerge.

Subtitles are the easiest material to pirate :) I’m sure they don’t have a copyright either.

Didn’t worked. I think its decided by account country and to change that, it says I need a card from abroad. So no solution. I don’t understand why this album is not available specifically 🤷‍♂️

Its like this. I can’t play from web-player and desktop too.

Wrong word. I meant I’m from a 3rd world country and the music from my country can’t be found on public indexers. Not a native speaker 🤷‍♂️

Makes sense 🤔 I’ll check Jellyfin for music capabilities first and maybe then I can try Lidarr. Thank you 🤗

I checked out Lidarr and it only supports usenet and bittorrent. Unfortunately it won’t work for “local” music I think.

Ways to pirate music as convenient as Spotify?
The reason I gave up on MP3's and subscribed to Spotify was because Spotify was easy. I've been listening "Iron Maiden - Empire of the Clouds" song every day and like a week ago, its removed. This was the last straw for me. Right now I'm trying to find "Stremio" of the music world. Can someone assist? Key features I'm looking for: - Synchronization between devices - Offline play - Playlist support - Both desktop and mobile apps - Wide music library (optional if I will upload music) - Lyrics (optional) Update: thanks to everyone who shared their solutions 🙏

I don’t understand people using Discord, Twitter or Facebook links to share images. MF it will expire in a day.

So they’re using our data and also getting paid for it 😄 I want to ditch it but can’t find an alternative that simple and with wide library.

Nice test! I’m a Tailscale user and I liked it being faster than others. I don’t care about memory usage but curious why there is a big gap 🤔 Like its using 20x more memory than Zerotier.

Thanks! It looks complicated but probably worth it. I’ll try thanks again!

Looking for a guide for installing Matrix server on Docker with Traefik
I want to set up my own Matrix server, but it seems a bit complicated in the proxy and federation part since I'm not using Nginx or Caddy. Does anyone have an up-to-date guide for Traefik version?

I didn’t use them for instance media storage because of egress fees. Maybe now I can switch.

🤚True, False

👉 true, false

Please python guys, don’t do this to us 🤦‍♂️

  • You don’t pay for storing on multiple servers. I never saw something like this on any provider I know.
  • Upgrading storage is not cheaper. Instance media storage reaches 500GB in a month and S3 is always cheaper than data volumes with given options for pictrs.
  • Backblaze is not cheapest. It has egress fees so it will cost much more than others. Although its cheaper than AWS.

They’re thumbnails of other instance posts. I suggest migrating pictrs to the S3 for cheaper/easier storage.

I’ve met some of them in Turkiye. It’s just so terrifying. I really, really can’t understand commies in west can support China. ITS NOT COMMUNISM GUYS, ITS FASCISM! Everything happening in front of our eyes while all of this happening. Just sad.
