I don’t know that I agree about air dominance. Ukraine has been bombarded by glide bombs, and Russia is getting a lot of value out of artillery and air support to soften positions before rolling in their conscripts.

I’m not saying that invading or counterattacking is definitely a mistake. I’m worried that those troops would be better utilized at the front. Either way we will see how this plays out as Russia repositions troops over the next week or so. Hopefully Ukraine can hold the line and keep from getting encircled

It’s also air power. I think we’re all kind of ignoring that Russia IS gaining ground in the east. The long delay in getting Ukraine more ammo and matériel let Russia overrun entrenched positions.

I think the most positive way of looking at this is - you attack where you can and not where your enemy expects you to. Ukraine has never been able to reclaim territory in large amounts. So maybe in a peace deal they can “trade” territory instead.

I’m no general so of course I have an opinion that means nothing. The analyses I’ve read also suggest the same thing - but caution that Russia already has a huge manpower advantage. If they can more effectively fight on two fronts than Ukraine then in a little while I worry that we’ll see these Ukrainian soldiers isolated and cut off, encircled, and captured or killed. Then Ukraine is worse off than they started unless the gains they make in the east while Russia is distracted are immense and war-ending.

Idk. It just seems like a desperation play.

I think we should be cautious. In the first days of Russias offensive four years ago they made huge gains quickly. The Russians will move assets and warplanes to the area and Ukraine will be stretched thin in more fronts.

I’m not pro-Russia by any stretch. I love to see Ukraine getting wins. I am just worried that they would have been better off being this aggressive on their existing fronts

I mean I hate to say it but if steam closed up shop tomorrow your games are gone too. You buy a license, not a copy, from steam

Fair. I still don’t think that entitles Apple to a cut of purchases in the app, but you’re right that a download fee sucks.

Why does providing the App Store entitle them to a percentage of in app purchases instead of, say, a fee per download or something?

“You don’t need to use us for payments but you still need to pay us for the payments we had nothing to do with” is perfectly monopolistic

I find it exceptionally difficult to read (at least your screen cap on mobile is hard to read)

They’re not exclusive but this isn’t a joke and a gripe - it’s just a gripe.

Yeah you’re right. I wrote this before sleep and after sleep it’s hilariously wrong lol. Oh well I’ll leave it as a cautionary tale

Each instance of . is a relative level to your current directory. ‘cd .’ changes your directory to your current directory. ‘cd …’ (edit: on mobile this keeps changing to three periods but it should just be two) changes it to the directory above, ‘cd ….’ would change it to three directories above. This is standard in *nix (Unix and Linux) operating systems

Edit 2: this is very wrong

This doesn’t help you but may help others. I always run my updates and deletes as selects first, validate the results are what I want including their number and then change the select to delete, update, whatever

The NDA bit got me ngl

Truth is this is an antagonistic negotiation oftentimes. You want to be paid more, they want to pay you as little as possible. There’s unfortunately no playbook, just advice and experience.

FWIW if they were that evasive I’d just say “look I’m not going to name an initial number, I’d like you to name a range.” But I’m at a somewhat senior level so I have a different experience than others might

Yeah I think the most generous interpretation here is that we have very different management styles. May our paths never cross professionally.

I’m also an IT manager. I lead a large team and manage managers and engineers from entry level to staff engineer. If I interviewed with you I’d skip out the door and tell everyone to avoid your company like the plague.

It’s dishonest to say “it’s ok for me to ask the candidate to name a salary but not ok for them to ask me.” That’s how we get pay inequity and ensure that workers’ power is diminished. “Usually the interviewer asks the questions” is WILD. I make sure to give candidates multiple opportunities to ask questions and provide honest answers. The idea that they would begin to ask a question and I’d say “well thanks for your time but we’re done here” is legitimately hilarious.

Maybe you’re hiring for extremely entry level positions (like…cashier) or something where the job is extremely well defined and you’re looking for a pair of hands to do a job but I want to hire the kind of people who ask these questions.

Unless you have enough knowledge of pay for your position and industry you are operating at a disadvantage. You are not obligated to provide a number to start the negotiations, and asking them what the budget is is not “denying the negotiation”

Why not be pushy? Why not be willing to walk away? Everyone’s situation differs but a server tech is not going to be lacking for work opportunities. If it’s calculated individually, you say “ok what would it be in my case?”

If they say “it depends on what you’re paid now” that’s a HUGE red flag and you should walk

It’s a negotiation. Unless you have a lot of knowledge about the industry you’re working in and what market salaries are, you’re at a disadvantage. You don’t have to say a number. They do - they’re offering you a job. If they refuse to offer you the job until you tell them your salary desire, they are trying to low ball you and you likely don’t want to work there.

When someone asks what you were paid or what your salary expectations are, ask them what the budget is for the role. They have one. They will not want to tell you, and you shouldn’t tell them your expectations

Bidens mostly a catastrophe but these guys don’t even have an accusation of wrongdoing

Sorry there’s a Mastodon subreddit? If it’s purpose isn’t nearly exclusively to redirect people to Mastodon then what are we doin lol

I didn’t say they block every sidewalk in the city. I said when they DO it’s extremely disruptive. Relax.

That’s all fine until they’re blocking sidewalks and access ways. Trying to push a stroller or wheelchair through the renta-scooter slalom course is horrible.
